An Optical Network-on-Chip(ONoC) based on silicon photonics is one of promising technology for next generation exascale computing architectures. Recent active researches on ONoC focus on improving bandwidth further and avoiding path collisions by using wavelength division multiplexing (WDM). However, the number of wavelengths used for the WDM increases linearly as the number of Processing Element (PE) increases in existing ONoCs which adopt centralized routing architecture. The problem will also arises growing cost of optical devices such as light switches and light sources and limits the scalability of ONoC due to the sinal loss caused by interference of distinct light sources. In this paper, we proposes a distributed routing architecture for ONoC which is based on 2D-mesh structure using WDM technique and present a method that minimize the required number of wavelengths exploiting the connectivity of communication. In comparison with existing centralized routing architectures, results show reduction by 56% of the number of wavelengths and 21% of the number of optical switches in $8{\times}8$ networks.
We present an updated version of the multilayer spectral inversion (MLSI) recently proposed as a technique to infer the physical parameters of plasmas in the solar chromosphere from a strong absorption line. In the original MLSI, the absorption profile was constant over each layer of the chromosphere, whereas the source function was allowed to vary with optical depth. In our updated MLSI, the absorption profile is allowed to vary with optical depth in each layer and kept continuous at the interface of two adjacent layers. We also propose a new set of physical requirements for the parameters useful in the constrained model fitting. We apply this updated MLSI to two sets of Hα and Ca II line spectral data taken by the Fast Imaging Solar Spectrograph (FISS) from a quiet region and an active region, respectively. We find that the new version of the MLSI satisfactorily fits most of the observed line profiles of various features, including a network feature, an internetwork feature, a mottle feature in a quiet region, and a plage feature, a superpenumbral fibril, an umbral feature, and a fast downflow feature in an active region. The MLSI can also yield physically reasonable estimates of hydrogen temperature and nonthermal speed as well as Doppler velocities at different atmospheric levels. We conclude that the MLSI is a very useful tool to analyze the Hα line and the Ca II 8542 line spectral daya, and will promote the investigation of physical processes occurring in the solar photosphere and chromosphere.
Determining 'photosynthetically active radiation' (PAR) is a key part of calculating phytoplankton productivity in a biogeochemical model. We explore the daily and seasonal variability in the ratio of PAR irradiance to total irradiance that occurred at Ieodo Ocean Research Station (IORS) in the East China Sea under clear-sky conditions in 2004 using a simple radiative transfer model (RTM). Meteorological data observed at IORS and aerosol optical properties derived from Aerosol Robotic Network observations at Gosan are used for the RTM. Preliminary results suggest that the use of simple PAR irradiance-ratio values is appropriate in calculating phytoplankton productivity as follows: an average of $0.44\;({\pm}0.01)$ in January to an average of $0.48\;({\pm}0.01)$ in July, with average daily variabilities over these periods of about $0.016\;({\pm}0.008)$ and $0.025\;({\pm}0.008)$, respectively. The model experiments demonstrate that variations in the major controlling input parameters (i.e. solar zenith angle, precipitable water vapor and aerosol optical thickness) cause PAR irradiance ratio variation at daily and seasonal timescales. Further, increases (>0.012) in the PAR irradiance ratio just below the sea-surface are positively correlated with high solar zenith angles and strong wind stresses relative to those just above the sea-surface.

Optical module plays an important role in the construction of high speed communication network. Laser diode is a component of optical module, and its characteristics are dependent of temperature, so many researches are reported. In this paper, we proposed the electrical equivalent circuit of PBH-LD based on the rate equations. And, the two leakage paths exit outside the active region. One path is converted pn-diode and the other path is converted two transistors using npn-Tr and pnp-Tr. In order to reduce the leakage currents, we observed the dependence of carrier concentrations of current blocking layers using PSPICE simulator.
There have been active research activities to use neural networks to analyze OCT images and make medical decisions. One requirement for these approaches to be promising solutions is that the trained network must be generalized to new devices without a substantial loss of performance. In this paper, we use a deep convolutional neural network to distinguish AMD from normal patients. The network was trained using a data set generated from an OCT device. We observed a significant performance degradation when it was applied to a new data set obtained from a different OCT device. To overcome this performance degradation, we propose an image normalization method which performs segmentation of OCT images to identify the retina area and aligns images so that the retina region lies horizontally in the image. We experimentally evaluated the performance of the proposed method. The experiment confirmed a significant performance improvement of our approach.
In optical information technology, an electro-controllable Photonic Band Gap (PBG) in a photonic crystal (PC) material is potentially useful for the manipulation of light. Despite a great deal of research on PBGs, the reliable use of electro-active PBG material systems is restricted to only a few cases because of the complex and limiting nature of the structures involved. Here, we propose a PBG system that uses a liquid crystal (LC) polymer composite. The composite is made of nematic LCs (NLCs) embedded in polymeric helical networks of photo-polymerized cholesteric LCs (CLCs). The composite film shows a large field-induced reversible color shift over 150 nm of the reflection band, due to the reorientational undulation of the helical axis, similar to the Helfrich effect.
We propose a PON repeater system which transports multiple PON channels at the same time over the physical limit of the standard E-PON reach. To increase the physical reach up to 60km, we used the O-E-O (optic-electric-optic) signal regeneration on an active remote terminal which is placed between a central office and passive remote nodes. Also, by incorporating the well-established WDM technology to aggregate multiple E-PON channels, we successfully increased the split ratio (the number of subscribers per fiber core) to over 256.

Second-order nonlinear optical(NLO) materials have been extensively studied for applications in photonic devices, such as frequency doubling and electro-optical(EO) modulation, because of their large optical nonlinearity, excellent processibility, low dielectric constant, and high laser damage thresholds. The poling behaviour of NLO chromophore in organic/inorganic matrixes showed the randomization of poled NLO chromophore in the absence of poling Held. The liquid crystal molecules in a droplet showed a long-range orientational order along a director. Therefore, liquid crystal effects on poling behaviour of NLO chromophore dispersed in organically modified inorganic sol-gel materials were investigated. Using sol-gel process for the development of NLO material has received increasing attention, Organically modifked inorganic NLO sol-Eel materials are obtained via incorporation of the organic NLO active chromophore into an alkoxysilane based inorganic network. One of the most important thing in this works was that tetraethoxysilane(TEOS) and methyltrimathoxysilane(HTMS) were used as precursor followed by hydrolysis and condensation without using any acidic catalyst during the process. The NLO chromophores in the liquid crystal nanodomains were well mixed with I/O hybrid matrix, deposited on transparent ITO-coated glasses. The poling behaviour of liquid crystal effects of NLO chromophore dispersed in I/O hybrid matrix were investigated by UV-vis spectroscopy. Size distribution and morphology of the NLO chromophores doped in the liquid crystal nanodomains dispersed in I/O hybrid matrix were investigated by SEM.
The stable anchorage of pyridoxal 5'-phosphate (PLP) in the active site of D-amino acid transaminase (D-AT) is crucial for the enzyme catalysis. The three-dimensional structure of D-AT revealed that Glu32 is one of the active site groups that may playa role in PLP binding. To prove the role of Glu32 in PLP stability, we firstly checked the rate of the potential rate-limiting step. The kinetic analysis showed that the rate of the ${\alpha}$-deprotonation step reduced to 26-folds in E32A mutant enzyme. Spectral analyses of the reaction of D-AT with D-serine revealed that the E32A mutant enzyme failed to stabilize the key enzyme-substrate intermediate, namely a quinonoid intermediate (E-Q). Finally, analysis of circular dichroism (CD) on the wild-type and E32A mutant enzymes showed that the optical activity of PLP in the enzyme active site was lost by the removal of the carboxylic group, proving that Glu32 is indeed involved in the cofactor anchorage. The results suggested that the electrostatic interaction network through the groups from PLP, Glu32, His47, and Arg50, which was observed from the three-dimensional structure of the enzyme, plays a crucial role in the stable anchorage of the cofactor to give necessary torsion to the plane of the cofactor-substrate complex.

In this paper, we propose core and edge router architectures with LPI(Low Power Idle) for reducing energy consumption in OBS networks. The proposed core router architecture is comprised of a BCP switch, a burst switch, line cards and sleep/wake controller for LPI. When the offered load of network is low, sleep/wake controller can change the state of the core router line card from active to sleep state for saving the energy after receiving network control packet. The edge router consists of a switch for access line card, a SCU and OBS edge router line cards. The LPI function in edge router line card is performed through network level control by network control packet, individually. Additionally, PHY/transceiver modules can transition active state to sleep state when burst assemble engine generates new bursts. To evaluate the energy saving performance of proposed architecture with LPI, the power consumption of each router is analyzed by using data sheet of commercial router and optical device. And, simulation is also performed in terms of sleep time of PHY/Transceiver through OPNET.
