  • Objectives : Microglia play a crucial role in electroacupuncture (EA) analgesia on neuropathic pain. The role of chemokines in producing analgesic effects of EA, however, is largely unknown. In the present study, we investigated the role of chemokines in producing analgesic effects of EA in the neuropathic pain model. Methods : Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned into three groups (anesthetized group (ANE), non-acupoint EA group (NAP), and ST36 - GB34 EA group (ACU)). Neuropathic pain was induced by tight ligation of L5 spinal nerve. Mechanical and thermal hypersensitivity of hind paw was tested. Western blot tests and immunofluorescence assay for C-C motif chemokine ligand 2 (CCL2) levels and microglia activation were performed on spinal cord L5/6. EA was treated once daily from the 3rd day after surgery for 5 days. Results : EA treatments applied to ST36 and GB34 significantly reduced both mechanical and thermal hypersensitivity after two and three times of treatment, respectively. While CCL2 expression significantly increased in neuropathic rats, it was significantly reduced in the ACU. In addition, co-localization of CCL2 and activated microglia significantly decreased in the ACU compared to those of ANE and NAP in the spinal cord L5/L6 dorsal horn. Conclusions : The present results suggest that EA applied to ST36 and GB34 modulates the reduction of CCL2 release from the injured neurons and consequently decreases microglia activation in the spinal cord. Regulation of chemokine induced spinal activation of microglia plays a key role in analgesic effects of EA in the rat model of neuropathic pain.

  • Objectives : Atopic dermatitis has a close relationship with damage of skin barrier function. To investigate the effects of Bangpungtongsungsan(BT) extract to the skin damage on mice model after atopic dermatitis elicitation, this study was done through forcing injury to mice's skin. Methods : The BALB/c mice were distributed into three groups: control(CON) group, atopic dermatitis(AD)-elicited group, Bangpungtongsungsan(BT)-treated group. AD-elicited and BT-treated group were caused AD according to the method of Christophers E., Mrowietz and Minehiro. The BT extract was administered for 48 hours to BT-treated group. We observed changes of external dermal formation, eosinophils in vasculature, lipid formation in stratum corneum, distribution of ceramide, distribution of capillary, $I{\kappa}B$ kinase(IKK) and induce nitric oxide synthase(iNOS) mRNA expression. We used the statistical methods of student t-test(p<0.05). Results : After dispensing BT extract into the AD-elicited group, the number of eosinophil as an atopic index in mice noticeably decreased and dermal injury decreased. Also the decrease of hyperplasia, degranulated mast cells, angiogenesis and substance P were shown. The lipid lamellae, lipid protect formation, were repaired and the distribution of ceramide which inhibit protein kinase C(PKC) activation increased, and the PKC caused inhibition of nuclear $factor(NF)-{\kappa}B$ activation. As a result of inhibition of $NF-{\kappa}B$ activation, iNOS production were inhibited and apoptotic cell were increased. Moreover the decrease of IKK and iNOS mRNA expression in BT-treated RAW 264.7 cell were noted. Conclusion : BT mitigated skin damage on mice model after atopic dermatitis elicitation through recovering skin barrier function and inhibiting nuclear $factor(NF)-{\kappa}B$ activation.

  • This paper is concerned with the development of ameliorating inventory models. The ameliorating inventory is the inventory of goods whose utility increases over the time by ameliorating activation. The term ameliorating inventory is used in this paper at least, since the terminology is not standard well known. This study is performed according to areas; one is an economic order quantity(EOQ) model for the items whose utility is ameliorating in accordance with Weibull distribution, and the other is a partial selling quantity(PSQ) model developed for selling the surplus inventory accumulated by ameliorating activation. The proposed models cannot be solved directly in a closed form, thus we used a computer program and a graphical solution method to obtain the optimal ordering and setting quantity in this paper. Numerical examples to illustrate the effect of ameliorating rate on inventory polices are shown at the end of this paper.

  • The conventional inventory models are concerned with the items of which utilities and amount of numbers are constant over time. But in practice the items in inventory systems are increasing or decreasing. This study is concerned with the development of ameliorating inventory models. • This paper describes the construction of an anisotropic three dimensional ventricular model based on the bidomain model. The cardiac artivation process in the normal cardiac cell and the myocardiac ischemic cell are simulated by the Huygen's principle. The depolarization process in the myocardial ischemia displays the delayed activation compared to the normal state. The repolarization process is simulated by the myocardial potential at the arbitrary ellapsed time after activation process.

  • A kinetic model for the oxidation of a $UO_2$ pellet to $U_3O_8$ powder has been suggested by considering the mass transfer and the diffusion of oxygen molecules. The kinetic parameters were estimated by a fitting of the experimental data. The activation energies for the chemical reaction and the product layer diffusion were calculated from the kinetic model. The oxidation conversion of a $UO_2$ pellet was simulated at various operating conditions. The suggested model explains the oxidation behavior of $UO_2$ well.

  • the aim of this study was to observe the combined effect of the CRT and LVAD on electromechanical cardiac behavior under LBBB and RBBB conditions computationally. We performed simulation by using advanced electromechanics model of failing ventricle combined with lumped model represents circulatory system, CRT and LVAD. We analyzed seven failing ventricle model including normal sinus rhythm, LBBB, LBBB coupled with CRT, LBBB coupled with CRT and LVAD, RBBB, RBBB coupled with CRT, and RBBB coupled with CRT and LVAD. We compared the effect from CRT and the effect from combined CRT and LVAD to both under LBBB and RBBB conditions. The results showed that the combined CRT and LVAD contributed a better hemodynamic compared to single CRT. This combined system synchronized the electrical activation greatly under LBBB and slightly under RBBB. It also shortened mechanical activation time which resulted short electromechanical delay. More importantly, the combined system produced better mechanical responses under both LBBB and RBBB conditions.

  • In this paper, we proposed the Fuzzy Polynomial Neural Networks(FPNN) model with fuzzy activation node. The proposed FPNN structure is generated from the mutual combination of PNN(Polynomial Neural Networks) structure and fuzzy inference system. The premise of fuzzy inference rules defines by triangular and gaussian type membership function. The fuzzy inference method uses simplified and regression polynomial inference method which is based on the consequence of fuzzy rule expressed with a polynomial such as linear, quadratic and modified quadratic equation are used. The structure of FPNN is not fixed like in conventional Neural Networks and can be generated. The design procedure to obtain an optimal model structure utilizing FPNN algorithm is shown in each stage. Gas furnace time series data used to evaluate the performance of our proposed model.

  • This paper proposes a model of SP(silent period) generation in masseter muscle by means of computer simulation. The model is based on the anatomical and physiological properties of trigeminal nervous system. In determining the SP generation pathway, evoked SPs of masseter muscle after mechanical stimulation to the chin are divided into normal and abnormal group. Normal SP is produced by the activation of mechanoreceptors in periodontal ligament. The activation of nociceptors contributes to the latter part of normal SP, abnormal extended SP is produced. As a result, the EMG signal generated by a proposed SP generation model is similar to both real EMG signal including normal SP and abnormal extended SP with TMJ patients. The result of this study have shown differences of SP generation mechanism between subjects both with and without TMJ dysfunction.
