A new approach to the solubilization of excess activated sludge by the inoculation of lactic acid bacteria was studied to reduce the amount of sludge produced in the activated sludge treatment process. Aerobic microorganism in sludge was lysed in anaerobic condition and the cytoplasmic substance eluted was utilized as a carbon source by lactic acid bacteria. On the basis of sludge solubilization efficiency, Lactobacillus brevis and Leuconostoc mesenteroides subsp mesenteroides were selected the best candidates among five kinds of Lactobacillus sp. and seven kinds of Leuconostoc sp. The sludge solubilization efficiency by heterofermentative lactic acid bacteria was more efficient than that of homofermentative bacteria. Initial value of soluble COD (sCOD) was 1050 mg/L at the initial inoculation time increased to 3070 mg/L (192% solubilization) at 96 h of the incubation time. The inoculation of lactobacillus brevis to the sludge resulted in 2824% increase in sCOD value after 96 h of incubation than the control experiment. Leuconostoc mesenteroides subsp mesenteroides showed 152% increase of solubilization and 30% increase of S-COD/T-COD on 96 h of incubation time. Considering the increase of S-COD by the inoculation of Leuconostoc sp. on 24 h, 10% inoculation of lactic acid bacteria to the sludge was most effective.
The Oxic-Settling-Anaerobic (OSA) treatment process, a modified Conventional Activated Sludge (CAS) process, was developed for the purpose of sludge reduction. The insertion of a sludge holding tank into a sludge return line, an anaerobic reactor, forming an OSA process, may provide a cost-effective way of reducing excess sludge production during a process. The OSA process was evaluated for its sludge reduction ability by kinetic parameter and mass balance, with an observed excess sludge reduction of 63.5%, as $P_{X.VSS}$, compared with the conventional activated sludge process.
Composite adsorbents were prepared by mixing water plant sludge with phenolic resin having the ratio of 1 : 1, 1 : 2, and 1 : 3 respectively, curing from $100^{\circ}C$ to $170^{\circ}C$ under $N_2$ atmosphere, and then activating with $N_2$ at $700^{\circ}C$. Thermal property, specific surface area and morphology of the composite adsorbents as well as their precursors were measured by TGA, BET and SEM respectively. Removal efficiency of the composite adsorbents to ${NH_4}^+$ and TOC was compared with those of commercial zeolite and activated carbon. The adsorbents presented very promising TOC removal efficiency of 98%, which was identical level to that of commercial activated carbon while they displayed removal efficiency, only 32%, of ${NH_4}^+$. Therefore, this composite adsorbent considered as the alternative material of commercial activated carbon, used as an expensive removal agent of organic substances and THM in water treatment plant and it also suggested a possibility of practical application in other processes.
A device to measure the temperature difference between the supernatant and the sediment blanket in the course of SV30 measurement in processing of activated sludge process. The temperature elevation in the sludge sediment represent the metabolic heat production by the microorganisms and can be an indicator for the capability of waste treatment. The utilities of the device for the analysis of activated sludge process were demonstrated in this report.
The design procedures for a biological reactor and a secondary settling tank (SST) of an activated sludge system are based on the steady state design method (Ekama et al., 1986; WRC, 1984) and the 1-D flux theory design method (Ekama et al., 1997), respectively. This study combined both of the design procedures, to determine the optimum sludge concentration in the reactor and the best design with the lowest cost. The best design of the reactor volume and the SST diameter at the optimum sludge concentration were specified with varying wastewater and sludge characteristics, temperature, sludge retention time (SRT) and peak flow rate. The effects of the influent wastewater characteristics, such as substrate concentration and unbiodegradable particulate fraction, were found to be considerable, but the effect of unbiodegradable soluble fraction was to be negligible. The effects of sludge settling characteristics, were also significant. SRT, as an operating parameter, was found to be an important factor for determining the optimum sludge concentration. However, the effect of temperature was found to be small. Furthermore, for designing a large scale wastewater treatment plant, the number of reactors or SSTs could be estimated, by dividing the total reactor volume or SST area. The new combined design procedure, proposed in this research, will be able to allow engineers to provide the best design of an activated sludge system with the lowest cost.

Bacterial community composition in activated sludge wastewater treatment bioreactors were analyzed using 16S rRNA gene-based pyrosequencing for the four different wastewater treatment processes. Sequences within the orders Rhodocyclales, Burkholderiales, Sphingobacteriales, Myxococcales, Xanthomonadales, Acidobacteria group 4, Anaerolineales, Methylococcales, Nitrospirales, and Planctomycetales constituted 54-68% of total sequences retrieved in the activated sludge samples, which demonstrated that a few taxa constituted majority of the activated sludge bacterial community. The relative ratio of the order members was different for each treatment process, which was assumed to be affected by different operational and environmental conditions of each treatment process. In addition, activated sludge had very diverse bacterial species (Chao1 richness estimate: 1,374-2,902 operational taxonomic units), and the diversity was mainly originated from rare species. Particularly, the bacterial diversity was higher in membrane bioreactor than conventional treatment processes, and the long solids retention time of the operational strategy of the membrane bioreactor appeared to be appropriate for sustaining diverse slow growing bacteria. This study investigating bacterial communities in different activated sludge processes using a high-throughput pyrosequencing technology would be helpful for understanding microbial ecology in activated sludge and for improving wastewater treatment in the future.
To detect whole ammonia-oxidizing bacteria in the activated sludge, group-specific primers targeting the 16S-rRNA gene of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria were used. The electrophoresis pattern of the PCR products seemed to produce a single band of approximately 1.0 k bp for the bacteria in activated sludge and Nitrosomonas europaea. No band was observed for nitrite-oxidizer Nitrobacter winogradskyi and heterotrophs such as Pseudomonas putida. Then direct measurement of the PCR product was made by fluorometry using the reagent Hoechist 33258, so that the fluorescent intensity was in proportional to the cell number of the sample up to 240. Total time required for the test was about 4 h including DNA extraction. The DNA fragments produced were cloned and their sequences showed high similarity to those of Nitrosomonas spp. This study showed the feasibility to detect ammonia-oxidizing bacteria and to esti-mate their population rapidly for the control of the nitrogen elimination process.
The conventional quantitative techniques of system analysis are intrinsically unsuited for dealing with humanistic systems. Therefore, the rule based modeling of fuzzy linguistic type has been developed for the analysis of humanistic systems and complex systems and it is very significant for analysis and design of fuzzy logic controller. The activated sludge process is a commonly used method for treating sewage and waste waters. A mathematical tool to build a fuzzy model of the activated sludge process where fuzzy implications and linear reasoning are used is presented in here. A root-mean square error is used as the criterion of the fuzzy model's adequacy to the A.S.P. and the least square method is used for the identification of optimum consequence parameters. A method of modeling of the activated sludge process using its input-output data and simulation results for its application are shown.

A dynamic model was applied to compare the environmental parameters and effluent characteristics of refinery wastewater in activated sludge treatment. The measured DO, pH, MLSS, and COD values were compared with the simulated their results in the activated sludge reactor. As results of simulation. good agreements between the measured and simulated results were investigated. The simulated and measured effluent COD were 19.0~19.4mg/L and 23.1mg/L. respectively. The simulated and measured DO were 1.9~2.4mg/L and 2.2mg/L. respectively.
