  • In this study, the characteristics of the current and wind forces acting on two floating bodies were numerically investigated using a commercial CFD software, STAR-CCM+. In the numerical analyses, LNGC was located right behind FSRU under uniform current or wind conditions. Steady calculations were carried out using a Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) solver and the realized k-epsilon model. First, the current coefficients of FSRU based only the CFD were compared with the model test data. Through this comparison, the present numerical models and mesh systems were indirectly verified. Next, computations for FSRU and LNGC in a uniform current were performed using different relative positions. It was found that the current coefficients were great affected by the longitudinal positions. Finally, the wind forces acting on FSRU and LNGC in tandem configurations were studied. The focus was on the shielding effects due to the aerodynamic interactions between FSRU and LNGC.

  • Exposure to DNA-damaging agents can elicit a variety of stress-related responses that may alter the expression of genes associated with numerous biological pathways. We used 19 k whole human genome chip to detect gene expression profiles and potential signature genes in human normal hepatocytes (THLE-3) by treatment of five direct acting mutagens, furylfuramide (AF-2), N-nitroso-N-methylurea (MNU), methylmethanesulfonate (MMS), 4-nitroquinoline-N-oxide (4-NQO) and 2-nitrofluorene (2NF) of the $IC_{20}$ concentration for 3 h. Fifty one up-regulated common genes and 45 down-regulated common genes above 1.5-fold by five direct-acting mutagens were identified by clustering analysis. Many of these changed genes have some association with apoptosis, control of cell cycle, regulation of transcription and signal transduction. Genes related to these functions, as TP73L, E2F5, MST016, SOX5, MAFB, LIF, SII3, TFIIS, EMR1, CYTL1, CX3CR1 and RHOH are up-regulated. Down-regulated genes are ALOX15B, xs155, IFITM1, BATF, VAV2, CD79A, DCDC2, TNFSF8 and KOX8. We suggest that gene expression profiling on mutagens by toxicogenomic analysis affords promising opportunities to reveal potential new mechanistic markers of genotoxicity.

  • This study investigates the emotional labor of fast fashion sales personnel using the qualitative research method. The research was performed through an in-depth interview with 10 sales personnel (managers, coordinators, head cashiers, and sales associates) who experienced fast fashion brands from July to October in 2011. The results of this study provide that fast fashion brands do have specific feeling rules and display behavior. Even though the sales personnel spend an extremely short time (about 1 minute) to serve customers, most of them experience exhaustion, fatigue, burnout and self-alienation because of emotional dissonance. Sales personnel do deep-acting and surface acting simultaneously and interviewees who have longer and more sales experience express less emotional dissonance. To reduce the negative results of emotional labor, the company plays an important role through the organizational culture; in addition, deep-acting could be recommended for a beginner until they are comfortable with sales. The results of this study provide the elements of emotional labor in a fast fashion and practical suggestions for store operation and sales personnel training.

  • To establish a Altari radish pre-processing system far kimchi, the leaves and root tail of the Altari radish cutting de-vices were developed. The cutting resistances depend on the edge angles, oblique angles and cutting speeds were measured and analyzed. The experiments were performed to reveal the optimal conditions that showed the minimum cutting resistances acting on the materials. As the results, the optimum conditions that acting on the leaves were at edge angle $25^{\circ}$, oblique angle $40^{\circ}$ and cutting speed 0.5 m/s, and those acting on the root tails were at edge angle $20^{\circ}$, oblique angle $30^{\circ}$ and cutting speed 0.5 m/s, respectively. Considered a safety conception, the oblique angle of the leaves cutting device was adjusted as $20^{\circ}$, and then the cutting efficiencies of the both devices at these conditions were showed perfect performances.

  • To improve the reliability for a wind-turbine gearbox, the mechanical loads acting on the gearbox need to be monitored and analysed exactly. This study was conducted to identify the characteristics of torques and bending moments acting on the main shaft of the gearbox using the rainflow counting method and predict the fatigue life of the main shaft by using the modified Miner's rule. While the mean wind speed became 3.5 m/s, the life of the main shaft by the acting torques was predicted as 4.3${\times}10^6$ years, and it by the bending moments was as 2.3${\times}10^4$ years. If the life of the wind turbine was estimated as 20 years, the fatigue life of the main shaft was regarded as infinite. Also, it was suggested that the life of the main shaft must be predicted by not the torques but the bending moments.

  • For the reliable design of substructure supporting offshore wind turbines it is very important to reduce the effects of wave forces. Since the substructure is strongly influenced by the effects of wave forces as the size of substructure increases. In the present study, the hybrid substructure with multi-cylinder is newly suggested to reduce the effects of wave forces. Using diffraction theory the scattering waves in a fluid region are expressed by an Eigenfunction expansion method with three dimensional potential theory to calculate the wave force acting on the hybrid substructure. The wave force and wave run-up acting on the hybrid substructure is presented to examine the water wave interaction according to the variation of cylindrical size and the distance among cylinders. It is found that the suggested hybrid substructure with multi-cylinder is very useful to reduce the effects of wave forces acting on the substructure for offshore wind turbines.

  • It is well known that the hydrodynamic interaction forces between ship and bank wall affect ship manoeuvring motion. This paper deals with the interaction effect acting on a ship navigating closely in the proximity of bank wail. In this paper, the calculation method based on the slender body theory for estimation of the hydrodynamic interaction forces between ship and bank wail is applied. The hydrodynamic interaction forces acting on a ship during passing through the proximity of the bank wail are predicted to evaluate an influence of these interaction forces on ship manoeuvrability. The calculation method used in this paper will be useful for prediction of ship manoeuvrability at the initial stage of design, for automatic control system of ship in confined waterways, for discussion of marine traffic control system and for construction of harbour.

  • This paper presents the deformation characteristics of the moving pressure plate in a balanced type vane pump that widely used automotive power steering systems. Moving pressure plate can control the clearance between rotor and plate in accordance with load pressure variation; it always guarantees that pump to have optimal volumetric efficiency. In this paper, firstly, we calculate the acting force on the pressure plate, which is used to determine the angular position and load condition for analyzing the deformation of pressure plate. Secondary, finite element method is used for the deformation analysis. As results of acting force analysis, it is found that maximum difference of forces occurs at angular position 28$\circ$ from the small arc center of cam ring and load pressure is a dominant factor to affect acting force variation. The deformation of pressure plate increases as load pressure increases. At high load pressure, the deformation of pressure plate becomes larger than the initial clearance between rotor and plate. Therefore, it is required to design the plate for controlling the deformation.

  • At-rest and active earth pressure in plane strain condition have been applied to the design of cylindrical retaining walls. But many researchers have indicated that the earth pressure on the cylindrical retaining walls would be smaller than in plane strain condition due to wall deformation and stress relief. In this paper, the distribution of earth pressure acting on diaphragm wall of a shaft in dry sand was predicted by using the convergence confinement method and model test was performed to verify the estimated values. Test results showed that the earth pressure acting on the diaphragm wall of a shaft was expected to be 1.1~1.5 times larger than active earth pressure of plane strain condition and 0.7~0.9 times less than at-rest earth pressure.

  • The prevention of and the controlling of symptoms, reductions in the frequency of exacerbations, and disease severity are central to the pharmacologic therapy of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). COPD patients are inclined to be older, have more comorbidities, and use polypharmacy as a result. Long-acting inhaled muscarinic antagonists (LAMAs) is a preferred treatment modality. However, the cardiovascular (CV) safety of anti-cholinergics, including LAMA, has been an issue. In contrast, the results of the UPLIFT trial and a pooled analysis of data from 30 trials of tiotropium illustrates the association of tiotropium with reductions in the risk of all cause mortality, CV mortality and CV events. And, the UPLIFT trial provides clues regarding the additive advantages of tiotropium in COPD patients who already are using long-acting inhaled ${\beta}_2$ agonists and inhaled corticosteroids. Following the contribution of tiotropium as a first LAMA, new LAMAs such as aclidinium and glycopyrrolate (NVA-237) seem to be emerging.
