A novel superabsorbent composite was prepared by intercalation polymerization of acrylic acid (AA) and 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propane sulfonic acid (AMPS) in the presence of montmorillonite (MMT), using ammonium persulfate (APS) as an initiator and $N,N'$-methylenebisacrylamide (MBA) as a cross linker. The superabsorbent composite was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Maximum absorbency of the composite in distilled water and 0.9% sodium chloride solution was 722 and 108 g/g, respectively. The composite was used for removal of heavy metal ions from aqueous solutions. Maximum amount of adsorption for $Ni^{2+}$, $Cu^{2+}$ and $Pb^{2+}$ was 211.0, 159.6 and 1646.0 mg/g, respectively, and the adsorption was in accordance with both Langmuir and Freundlich model. The composite could be regenerated and reused in wastewater treatment.
pH-sensitive hydrogels were studied as a drug carrier for the protection of insulin from the acidic environment of the stomach before releasing it in the small intestine. In this study, hydrogels based on poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) networks grafted with methacrylic acid (MAA) or acrylic acid (AAc) were prepared via a two-step process. PEO hydrogels were prepared by ${\gamma}-ray $ irradiation (radiation dose: 50 kGy, dose rate: 7.66 kGy/h), grafted by either MAA or AAc monomers onto the PEO hydrogels and finally underwent irradiation (radiation dose: 520 kGy, dose rate: 2.15 kGy/h). These grafted hydrogels showed a pH-sensitive swelling behavior. The grafted hydrogels were used as a carrier for the drug delivery systems for the controlled release of insulin. Drug-loaded hydrogels were placed in simulated gastric fluid (SGF, pH 1.2) for 2 hr and then in simulated intestinal fluid (SIF, pH 6.8). The in vitro drug release behaviors of these hydrogels were examined by quantification analysis with a UV-Vis spectrophotometer.
The aim of our study is to prepare nanocomposites consisting polymer/inorganic nanoparticles and investigate their physical properties as a functional material. In this study, a nanocomposite of copper sulfide (CuS) nanoparticles introduced into a poly(acrylic acid) matrix was prepared and the optical absorption property was measured. The composite exhibited strong absorption of both ultraviolet and near-infrared rays, indicating that the composite is applicable to a solar radiation shielding filter. The wavelength of the near infrared absorption was controlled from ca.1000 nm to 1700 nm by heat and acidic solution treatments.
This research was attempted to improve the hydrophilicity of polypropylene(PP) by using low temperature plasma polymerization of acrylic acid(AA) as a starting material. The results of the present study were as follows: The PP films deposited with AA plasma polymer showed excellent hydrophilicity, that the polar parts were about 20 dyn/cm, and also that the surface tensions were about 55 dyn/cm, whereas the disperse parts were not changed. Work of adhesions of the PP films deposited with AA plasma polymer were above 100 erg/ $cm^{2}$. AA plasma polymer formed by low temperature plasma polymerization of acrylic acid(AA) was even thin layer which contained many -OH groups.
The esterification reaction of previously obtained l,4-sorbitan with acrylic acid using Novozym 435 was carried out in t-butanol as solvent. Immobilized lipase Novozym 435 showed high enzymatic activity at $50^{\circ}C$ in t-butanol and optimum contents of Novozym 435 added in the esterification reaction was 3%(w/v). The maximum conversion rate was 55.8% when initial concentration was 50g/L and conversion rate of this reaction was 63.5% when the molar ratio of l,4-sorbitan to acrylic acid was 1:3.
Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs), which were purified by etching in 25% $H_2SO_4/HNO_3$ solution at $60^{\circ}C$ for 2 h, were modified via plasma polymerization coating of acrylic acid, allylamine or acetylene, and then utilized to prepare PEI/CNT composites. First, plasma polymerization conditions were optimized by measuring the solvent resistance of coatings in THF, chloroform and NMP, and the tensile strength of PEI/CNT (0.5%) composites as a function of plasma power (20~50 W) and monomer pressure (20~50 mTorr). The tensile strength of PEI/CNT composites was further evaluated as a function of CNT loading (0.2, 0.5 and 1%). Finally, FT-IR was utilized to provide a better understanding of the improved tensile properties of PEI/CNT composites via plasma polymerization coating of CNTs. Plasma polymerization of acrylic acid greatly enhanced the tensile strength of PEI/CNT composites, as did allylamine but to a lesser degree, while acetylene plasma polymerization coating decreased tensile strength.

We report the syntheses bis-(N,N-diethylaminoethyl) perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic diimide (PDI) of lyotropic chromonic liquid crystal and it dissolves in photocurable ionic monomer solution. PDI-acrylic acid solution was observed whether liquid crystal phase appeared in each concentration. Thin film polarizer was prepared by simultaneously coating and aligning the solution of PDI-acrylic acid (in the chromonic nematic phase) onto glass substrates using a mechanical shearing force and was cured by irradiation of UV light. Also Photopatterned polarizer is manufactured by same process.
