  • In order to prepare against the unpredictable provocation of nK on NWI, instead of the threat based force enhancement, sufficient capability based force planning is required in consideration to enemy capability, operations environment, and technological development. This thesis proposes a method on how to prioritize the required capabilities of NWI during the process of identifying capabilities and investing on the decided acquisition assets. Ambiguity in deciding the priority is eliminated and detailed planning is possible through instituting relationship of organization, operation and capability, and by designating weight based on the above relationship. This method identify the various operations and required capabilities, classify the order of priority clearly for NWI, when compare to other method of priority decision. Although capability based force planning requires more assets and faces limitations due to budget, this method will provide and efficient decision making procedure through precise prioritization.

  • The consequences of microbe-mineral interaction often resulted in the chemical, structural modification, or both in the biologically induced mineral. It is inevitable to utilize the high powered resolution of electron microscopy to investigate the mechanism of biogenic mineral transformation at nano-scale. The applications of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) capable of electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) to the study of microbe-mineral interaction were demonstrated for two examples: 1) biogenic illite formation associated with structural Fe(III) reduction in nontronite by Fereducing bacteria; 2) siderite phase formation induced by microbial Fe(III) reduction in magnetite. In particular, quantification of the changes in Fe-oxidation state at nanoscale is essential to understand the dynamic modification of minerals resulted from microbial Fe reduction. The procedure of EELS acquisition and advantages of EELS techniques were discussed.

  • The goal of radiation treatment planning is to deliver the dose to the patient within $5\%$ of that prescribed. We have often encountered the situation that the area which have not only several irregular contours but also tissue heterogeneities should be treated. With conventional devices such as wedges, missing tissue compensator. there are some limitations to achieve the uniform dose distribution in treatment volume. The use of CT simulator, 3-D planning system, computer-controlled milling machine enables it to deliver the dose uniformally. This report includes the whole procedure which have patient data acquisition 3D planning, computer-controlled milling, performance verification of 3D compensator, and TLD evaluation. We applied it for the treatment of head and heck cancer only. In Spite of the irregular contour and different electron density of tessue, we have achieved the uniformity of the dose distribution within ${\pm}3\%$ relatively. Although there are some problems which are not only verification of performance but uncertainties of using the new treatment device, we believe that the improvement of dosimetry will eliminate the uncertainties of that application. so the other lesions besides head and neck can will be ale to use the 3D compensator to achieve the dose uniformity

  • A high-speed railway system represents a typical example of large-scale multi-disciplinary system, consisting of subsystems such as rolling-stock, electrical hardware, electronics, control, information, communication, civil technology etc. The system design and acquisition data of the large-scale system must be the subject under strict configuration control and management. Systems engineering technology development project for Korea next generation High-speed Electric Multiple Unit (HEMU) system in progress is a national large system development project that is not only a large-size and complex but also multi-disciplinary in nature. Therefore, all stakeholders must understand and share the functional and performance requirements of HEMU throughout its life-cycle phases. Also in the test and evaluation phase, all systems requirements must be verified. In 2011, the prototype train manufacturing will be completed. It will do test run on the commercial line and all systems requirements are verified until 2012. For the system verification, the test and evaluation process have to be established before the test trial run. Using a systems engineering tool, the system design database(SDD) with requirements traceability and development process management in the course of the development have to be established. This paper represents the test and evaluation process development based on the SEMP(Systems Engineering Management Plan) developed in the design stage. The test and evaluation process is refined and updated in comparison to the design stage one. The test and evaluation process consists of procedure, test and evaluation method and schedule. So through this process, it is defined that each systems requirements is verified on which test and about what time.

  • Recently, safety-critical aviation system development programs promoted domestically have been terminated in the middle stage or they have not been put to practical use at the final stage. The program failure may be caused by various factors, but this study focused on imperfect test and evaluation(T&E) procedures. In general, T&E process of a safety-critical system must be distributed throughout the entire life-cycle of the system, have a continuity in phases, and can be implemented in a variety of ways depending on the maturity of the system development and acquisition strategy. This paper aims to present a new strategy by analyzing the domestic and overseas T&E processes to reduce the risk of domestic safety-critical CNS/ATM system development program and increase the success rate of program. First, we discuss the verification and validation techniques for safety-critical systems, analyze the T&E procedures of advanced institutes and the domestic situation, and then compare the domestic and overseas T&E processes to complement the imperfect testing procedure.

  • This paper introduces a classification algorithm which can be applied to a learning problem with incomplete data sets, missing variable values or a class value. This algorithm uses a data expansion method which utilizes weighted values and probability techniques. It operates by extending a classifier which are considered to be in the optimal projection plane based on Fisher's formula. To do this, some equations are derived from the procedure to be applied to the data expansion. To evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm, results of different measurements are iteratively compared by choosing one variable in the data set and then modifying the rate of missing and non-missing values in this selected variable. And objective evaluation of data sets can be achieved by comparing, the result of a data set with non-missing variable with that of C4.5 which is a known knowledge acquisition tool in machine learning.

  • In order to evaluate the performance of fire-protection foams used to protect structures from heat and fire damages, the thermal characteristics of them are experimentally investigated. This research focuses on the destruction of a fire-fighting foam subjected to heat radiation. A simple repeatable test apparatus for fire-protection foams subjected to fire radiation is developed. It involves a foam generation equipment, a fire source for heat generation, repeatable test procedures, and data acquisition techniques. Results of the experimental procedure indicated that each thermocouple within the foam responded in a similar manner and gradually to a temperature of 115℃~20℃. At this point, each trace generally rises to a temperature of approximately 90℃. The temperature gradient in the foam as time passes increases with increasing the foam expansion ratio. In addition, it is found that the temperature gradient along the foam for depth decreases with increasing the foam expansion ratio.

  • This paper presents the optimum design methodology for composite wing structure which automatically calculates the safety margin using optimization framework integrating failure modes. Particularly, its framework is possible to optimize sizing procedure to prevent failure mode which has the greatest effect on reducing the sizing time of composite structure. The main failure mode was set as the first ply failure, buckling failure mode, and bolted joint stress field, and the margin was calculated to minimize the weight. The design variable is a laminate sequence database and the responses are strain, buckling, bolted joint stress field. The objective function is the mass of the wing structure. The results of buckling analysis were compared using the finite element model to verify the robustness and reliability of Composite Optimizer.
