This study was done to identify the levels of knowledge and attitude toward HIV/AIDS in professional graduate medical school students. A cross-sectional survey was used, and data were collected in 2014. Participants were 97 students in South Korea. Data were analyzed using SPSS WIN 19.0 program. The mean score for HIV/AIDS knowledge was 8.91 and attitude was 7.00 out of 15. The levels of HIV/AIDS knowledge and attitude were not statistically significantly different according to participants' general characteristics. There was a statistically significant correlation between the levels of HIV/AIDS knowledge and attitude. Medical students having a high HIV/AIDS knowledge level tended more towards a positive attitude. These findings can be used in developing effective education strategies for medical students and health care providers to increase knowledge and decrease negative attitude toward HIV/AIDS.
AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome) known as 20th century's pest is spreading rapidly internationally, and the number of patients are increasing. Since the prevention vaccine has not been developed yet, the only available effective method for preventing AIDS is the health education. Most of the AIDS-infected persons are males, and especially over twenties of age. Therefore, it is necessary to measure the knowledge and attitudes on AIDS of male workers. The purpose of this study is to examine the knowledge, attitudes and education-needs of male workers on AIDS. The data were collected by a questionnaire survey of 977 workers who work in Seoul and Kyungki areas from September 1 thru October 4, 1997. The results were as follows: 1. We examined the level of knowledge on AIDS transmission, symptoms, diagnoses, and prevention methods. Even though respondents had a moderate level of AIDS-related knowledge, still sizable numbers believed that AIDS could be transmitted through casual contact. White-collar workers, higher education groups, higher income groups or those with age thirties showed respectively higher level of knowledge than the other comparison groups. 2. 85% of the respondents recognized AIDS as a serious problem. Statistical analysis revealed that white-collar workers, higher education groups or those with age twenties had more positive attitudes towards a AIDS patient than their counterparts. 3. Over 80% of the respondents replied that AIDS education in schools, work places, social agencies or by mass-media was necessary. 62.8% of the respondents mentioned that government should play the major role in developing AIDS education program. 4. The prediction model of AIDS-education needs was examined with using the multiple logistic regression method. The education level and AIDS-related knowledge were turned to be statistically significant factors influencing positively the perceived needs of AIDS education.
This study investigated the correlations of the AIDS knowledge, self-esteem, sense of control, optimistic bias toward AIDS, and condom use in the Chinese male college students. A cross-sectional survey was used, and 307 male students were recruited from anonymous universities in cities of two provinces in China. The data were analyzed according to descriptive statistics, ANOVA, Pearson's correlations. The Chinese male college students had an optimistic bias toward AIDS. The score of AIDS knowledge was 73%, and the self-esteem and sense of control scores were all rated higher than the median. The difference among groups according to grade and age were statistically significant in this study. The self-esteem, sense of control, and optimistic bias toward AIDS showed significant positive correlations, but AIDS knowledge, optimistic bias, and condom use have no correlations. The studies that examine psychological variables with condom use among various groups should be followed in the Chinese context.
Purpose : After Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) is known to be a fatal disease, efforts and studies are made to determine the cause, treatment method and method of preventing infection. However, no treatment method is present and vaccine development has not been made. Therefore, the most effective treatment method is prevention, and almost 100% prevention is possible when correct preventive measures are taken. We suggest effective prevention education by comparing knowledge and attitude of those unmarried men who had sexual encounters with prostitutes (high risk group) and those with no sexual encounters with prostitutes (low risk group). Methods : From January 1, 2000 to June 30, 2000, a survey was done in 516 unmarried soldiers and college students. With the collected data, chi-square test was used to compare and analyze the demographic characteristic, knowledge on AIDS, and attitude on AIDS between the high risk group and low risk group. One-way ANOVA test was used to compare and analyze the scores on knowledge between these two groups. Results : Among 516 unmarried men, 256 men (49.6%) fell into the high risk group and 260 men (50.4%) into the low risk group. Both groups showed that they heard of AIDS during their middle school years. The main route of obtaining knowledge on AIDS was through TV programs with 124 men(48.4%) in the high risk group and 167 men (64.2%) in the low risk group (P=0.002). Among 20 items, the average score on knowledge was $13.9{\pm}1.9$ in the high risk group and $14.1{\pm}1.8$ in the low risk group with no statistical difference between these two groups (P=0.191). Two items showed statistical significance in the low risk group compared with the high risk group; these were the item of AIDS being transmitted through transfusion (P=0.014) and through mosquitoes (P=0.009). As for attitude, statistical significance was present in the item stating that AIDS patients should be isolated in the high risk group compared with the low risk group (P=0.029). Conclusions : The present study showed that both the high risk group and low risk group obtained knowledge on AIDS through TV. No statistical difference was present between the two groups other than the high risk group showed statistically high results in two items on knowledge and one item on attitude. Thus, these results showed that exposure to AIDS can be lowered with better knowledge and the attitude of those with a low risk of infection was more positive.
This study aimed to explore how the AIDS knowledge, self esteem, sense of control and optimistic bias affect condom use among male college students. The survey was done among 323 male students within a university in B city and analyzed according to descriptive statistics, ANOVA, Pearson correlation, and multiple regression analysis. The students had optimistic bias regarding AIDS, and the scores on the AIDS knowledge, self esteem, and sense of control were all rated high. Self esteem and sense of control, sense of control and optimistic bias, sense of control and condom use on sexual intercourse with steady sex partner, condom use on with casual sex partners and with steady sex partner showed significant positive correlation. Self esteem and sense of control were predictors of condom use on sexual intercourse with steady sex partner. Additional studies among various groups should be followed to identify the relationship between variables and condom use.

Purpose: With the implementation of the Act on Life Sustaining Treatment, hospice-palliative care will be extended to non-cancer diseases including the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). However, there are concerns about negative perceptions and prejudice toward AIDS patients. The purpose of this study was to investigate factors related with willingness to volunteer (WV) for patients with end-stage AIDS among hospice volunteers. Methods: Participants were 326 hospice volunteers from 19 institutions. A self-administered questionnaire was employed to investigate the participants' WV for end-stage AIDS patients, and the questions were answered using an 11-point rating scale. Demographics, volunteer activity, satisfaction with hospice volunteering, knowledge of AIDS, and attitudes towards AIDS patients (i.e., fear AIDS patients, negative attitude towards AIDS patients, personal stigmatization and stigmatizing attitude) were also investigated. A multiple regression analysis was performed to examine factors associated with WV for patients with end-stage AIDS. Results: WV for patients with end-stage AIDS was 2.82 points lower than that for cancer patients (P<0.001). The multiple regression analysis showed that the higher the level of satisfaction with hospice volunteering (P=0.002) and the lower the level of "personal stigmatization" (P<0.001), participants showed greater WV for end-stage AIDS patients. Conclusion: The level of satisfaction with hospice volunteering and "personal stigmatization" were factors associated with participants' WV for patients with end-stage AIDS.

Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of an HIV/AIDS education program for professional graduate medical school students using a teaching-learning methods. Methods: The design of this study was a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest experiment. A total of 116 professional graduate medical school students in South Korea were included. They were randomly assigned to either a discussion-centered teaching-learning method group (n=60) or a lecture-centered teaching-learning method group (n=56). Data were collected between August and December 2015 and were analyzed using descriptive statistics, ${\chi}^2$-test, one-tailed independent t-test, one-tailed Mann-Whitney U-test, one-tailed Wilcoxon signed-rank test, and one-tailed paired t-test using SPSS WIN 19.0 program. Results: There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups with respect to HIV/AIDS knowledge, attitudes, and education satisfaction. However, the scores of knowledge and attitudes were statistically significantly increased after the education than before the education in both groups. Conclusion: To effectively improve the knowledge and attitude of HIV/AIDS, it is necessary to select an appropriate teaching-learning method for the target subjects and objectives of HIV/AIDS education.
