  • The history of architectural acoustics is a part of history of human being getting together for both politics and entertainments, is also a part of the history of nobility pursuing hearing enjoyments, is still a part history of scientists deeply understanding the concept of "just for people", and as well as is a part history ceaselessly driven by the musicians to find their real hearts through music. The history of architectural acoustics explains not only the acoustic knowledge developments in architectural design, but also the unity on contradictory of both the science and the arts, both the technology and the culture, both the sense and sense organ. The history of architectural acoustics prints the interactions between the mankind and the nature, between the mankind and themselves, between the mankind and their souls, in which course people understand their feelings more deeply and deeply. This paper discusses the brief history of architectural acoustic in China from the ancient drama stages to grand theaters in 20 century, even up to nowadays, including some most important buildings and events as well.

  • Various shapes of the noise barrier frame and construction of the sound absorbing panels are studied. It is found that insertion of the sound absorbing panel into barrier frame results in the decrease of the sound absorption coefficient, while the empty frame shows a peak around 250Hz. Using double sound absorbing panels with air gap can increase sound absorption coefficient up to NRC 0.85.

  • In a church, speech intelligibility is very important together with the reverberance for musical activities. In order to obtain the primary data of a acoustical design for churches records were refereed and churches were measured in Europe and Japan. And in the base of measurements, those were judged by subjective hearing test. As some results, it has been found that the room acoustics of churches were different in a country and the reverberation time was perferred two seconds for speech intelligibility. However, although personal deviations were admitted, more long echoes were preferred for the music.

  • Domestically, demands for multi-purpose performance venues which accommodate various performance genres have increased. However, those venues have limited capability and confined to a primary performance. The present work investigated various methods for controlling the acoustics of room for required performance genres by reviewing aurally presented and published materials. The method of varying the acoustics of a space is called Variable Acoustics, and adjusted in either passive and active ways. Passive control encompasses variable absorption, variable volume, coupled volume, and canopy reflectors, where the acoustics of a room is controlled in an architectural way. Active control includes In-line, Regenerative, and Hybrid systems where the acoustics of a room is manipulated electronically. The mechanism and application of each passive control system in existing venues are reviewed and their pros and cons are discussed. Also, the concept of each active systems and product applications are looked at through literature reviews. Lastly, some considerations that need to be taken into in the planning and design stage of a multi-purpose hall using Variable Acoustics are suggested.

  • By virtue of recent economic development and cultural progress, the desires willing to enjoy a plentiful leisure life among people are on enlarging, then according to this, the demand for a grand performance hall where various cultural events are achievable is also on increasing. However, since the grand performance hall has its characteristics that must accommodate various forms of performances likely from lecture, meeting activity to recital, and because the clearness of sound is on emphasizing, and also it requires the repletion or abundance of sound simultaneously, it could be said that from the designing stage, a sufficient examination and plan with regard to the architectural acoustics design is indispensable. On such view point, for the object of the grand performance hall under actually planning to build, this Study is attempting to compare analyze on Room Acoustics Characteristics using computer simulation from the stage of design. It is considered that the material analyzed in such way could be reflected in maximum basis to the design of the performance hall that minimizes the acoustic defect at the designing step, and also it could be utilized as the useful material at the time of design for a similar form of performance hall in the future.

  • Sound absorption characteristics of audience seating is very important when design and simulate room acoustics of concert halls or multi-purpose auditoriums. Sound absorption characteristics of audience seats were measured in reverberation chamber by varying the row to row spacing and number of audiences. By the increment of the row to row spacing, sound absorption characteristics in mid frequency band was increased. Also, sound absorption was proportionated to the number of audience.

  • Acoustics is widely used in marine and inland fisheries research and management. In June 2002 ICES (Council for the Exploration of the Sea) held a symposium titled “Acoustics in Fisheries and Aquatic Ecology” in Montpellier, France. There were several topics to be presented such as ecology marine waters, combination of methods, target strength (TS) method and results, TS modeling, survey design, behavior, avoidance, technology, and identification. • The computer simulation and mock-up test are recently applied to the practical design for the room acoustics to predict and evaluate its characteristics. In this paper, the sound field properties predicted and evaluated by the computer simulation were compared to the measured data. Comparison and analysis between simulation data and measured data were performed for the Reverberation Time, Sound Pressure Level at the various measuring positions and frequencies and Definition, Early Decay Time, Speech Transmission Index.
