Background and Objectives: Clear speech is an effective communication strategy used in difficult listening situations that draws on techniques such as accurate articulation, a slow speech rate, and the inclusion of pauses. Although too slow speech and improperly amplified spectral information can deteriorate overall speech intelligibility, certain amplitude of increments of the mid-frequency bands (1 to 3 dB) and around 50% slower speech rates of clear speech, when compared to those in conversational speech, were reported as factors that can improve speech intelligibility positively. The purpose of this study was to identify whether amplitude increments of mid-frequency areas and slower speech rates were evident in Korean clear speech as they were in English clear speech. Subjects and Methods: To compare the acoustic characteristics of the two methods of speech production, the voices of 60 participants were recorded during conversational speech and then again during clear speech using a standardized sentence material. Results: The speech rate and longterm average speech spectrum (LTASS) were analyzed and compared. Speech rates for clear speech were slower than those for conversational speech. Increased amplitudes in the mid-frequency bands were evident for the LTASS of clear speech. Conclusions:The observed differences in the acoustic characteristics between the two types of speech production suggest that Korean clear speech can be an effective communication strategy to improve speech intelligibility.

In this study, we used underwater acoustics to analyze the spatial and temporal distribution characteristics of largehead hairtail (Trichiurus leptueus) based on the luminous thronging of metal halide fishing lamps and induction fishing lamps. As a result, the illuminating power was approximately 1.3 times higher using the metal halide fishing lamp whereas the density of hairtals by distance was approximately 1.9 times higher using the induction fishing lamp. Regarding water depth distribution, hairtails were detected depths of 25-30 m during August and at all water depths in November as assessed using fishing lamps.
Time-reversal processing (TRP) has been shown as an effective way to focus in both time and space. The temporal focusing properties have been used extensively in underwater acoustics communications. Recently. adaptive time-reversal processing (ATRP) was applied to the simultaneous multiple focusing in an ocean waveguide. In this study. multiple focusing with ATRP is extended to the underwater acoustic communication algorithm for multiple receiving locations. The developed algorithm is applied to the underwater acoustic communication to show, via simulation and real data, that the simultaneous self-equalization at multiple receiving locations is achieved.

Background and Objectives : Although many studies have examined the effect of drinking on voice change, its cause and degree remain unclear. Since voice change occurs more frequently the day following drinking, rather than immediately afterwards, we examined whether the voice change was correlated with reflux laryngitis due to gastroesophageal motor disturbances. Subjects and Methods : For this study, 10 patients were selected who had neither voice change nor symptoms of reflux laryngitis at baseline (male : female=5 : 5, mean age=28 years old) They were subjected to psychoacoustic, acoustic, and aerodynamic tests and video stroboscopy at 4:00 P.M. the day before drinking (test 1), at 8:00 A.M. (test 2) and 4:00 P.M. (test 3) on the following day. On the day of drinking, the subjects had to drink more than their usual amount of Soju(Korean liquor) and were not allowed to talk much. The stroboscopy findings were quantified using the PC Belafsky score. Results : The laryngeal response to gastric reflux after drinking was compared between tests 1 and 2. In both tests, laryngeal edema and injection were observed on video stroboscopy. The psychoacoustic test detected more severe hoarseness in test 2 than in test 1. In addition, the acoustic test detected a mild increase in both jitter and shimmer. However, the differences between tests 2 and 3, which were performed when there was reduced or no gastric reflux, were not significant. Conclusions : Drinking may cause gastric reflux, which produces reversible voice change by irritating the vocal cords and larynx. Therefore, reflux laryngitis should be suspected in a patient whose voice changes markedly after drinking.
The most common conception of a work of art is as a unique object. In conservation the prevalent notion of authenticity is based on physical integrity, this guides judgements about loss. For the majority of traditional art objects, minimising change to the physical work means minimising loss, where loss is understood as compromising the (physical) integrity of a unique object, and this forms the focus of conservation. Fundamental to conservators' approach to the conservation of contemporary art is the notion that the artist's intent should guide conservators' practice. Since most of the artists creating installation art are living, it is possible to interview them about the details of the installation, attitudes to changing technology, parameters of acceptable change and their views about what aspects of the installation are essential to preserve. Conservation is no longer focused on intervening to repair the art object but has become concerned with documentation and determining what change is acceptable and managing those changes. In order to accurately install works in the future it is necessary to broaden our focus to include elements of an installation that affect the viewer's experience. This might mean documenting the space, the acoustics, the balance of the different channels of sound, the light levels and the way one enters and leaves the installation. These are as important as the more tangible or material elements in the conservation of the work. It is also necessary to work with industry and specialists outside the field of conservation to develop new skills to preserve and manage new types of objects in our care. We can also document the less tangible details of an installation such as the light levels, the character of the sound etc. This is a new area of conservation and as a profession our understanding and knowledge will deepen with time. All of these strategies work together to help to limit the risk of not being able to accurately install these works in the future. Deciding what can be changed and how to best care for any element of an installation will depend on its meaning and role. For both contemporary and traditional objects such decisions are documented by conservators and although the focus of the conservator may have moved away from the material object, the approach is still rooted in traditional notions of collection care.
A method of measuring impulse response of acoustic system, two kinds of cross-correlation methods (the direct correlation method and the M-sequence modulation correlation method) were applied. According to the direct correlation method, by using stationary random noise source and by calculating the cross-correlation function between the sourece and the output signal, equivalent impulse response can be obtained not being influenced by the back ground noises. By applying this method, the measurement of echo-time patterns in rooms and oblique incident sound absorption characteristics of sound absorbing materials was carried out. In the case of the M-sequence modulation correlation method which was contrived by Aoshima, an intermittent random nosie modulated by M-sequence signal is used as the source signal, and the cross-correlation function between the M-sequence signal and the squared output signal is calculated. According to this method, equivalent energy impulse response (squared impulse response) of te propagation system can be obtained without being influenced by the back ground noises and the air fluctuation caused by wind. As the applcaition of this measuring method to the architectural acoustics, the meaurements of echo-time patterns, reverberation decays and sound pressure lev디 distributions in rooms and sound insulation efficiencies in buildings were carried out. From these experimental studies, it has been found that this M-sequence modulation correlation method is markedly useful especially for the field masurement of sound insulation under high back ground noise condition.
The question how man can perceive the direction of a sound is one of the traditional psychoacoustical problems. Rayleigh already began to investigate this subject in 1870s and kept on interesting himself intermittently throughout his research career. Rayleigh was only concerned with this subject among those of perception of sound and focused more interest on it than any other acoustical problems. At first he insisted on the perception of the direction of a sound by the difference of intensity of a sound in two ears. but was phased in accepting that by the difference of phase of a sound there. Thus he arrived at the modern view that the perception of the sound direction is caused by the difference of intensity in high frequencies and the difference of phase in low frequencies. Rayleigh presented his ability as an excellent experimenter by employing very cautious and ingenious experimental settings and acquired persuasive results by linking the consequences of his mathematical theorization with his experiments.
This paper analyzes the effect of a thermocline on the long-range acoustic signal propagation using the experimental data acquired in the shallow water near Jeju island. Temperature and salinity measurement data in Korea Oceanographic Data Center (KODC) show that the seasonal thermocline exists near Jeju island, and, under the thermocline, the bottom loss property strongly affects the long-range propagation of acoustic signal along the down-ward refractive paths. We estimate the bottom loss under the thermocline using experiment data obtained near Jeju island in May, 2013. The result shows that the estimated bottom losses are below 3 dB and the higher level signal is received at the deeper receiver depths. This shows that the acoustic trapping under the thermocline can be a viable long-range signal transmission channel in the shallow water with a thermocline.
Though there have been advances in the numerical analysis of the acoustic scattering by smooth objects, numerical analysis of the acoustic scattering by the objects that are partially exposed on the interface are still rare. In determining the backscattering amplitude by a partially buried cylinder on a seabed, reverberation by the interface changes the feature of the scattering form function. Current study adopted the Method of moments (MoM) to provide the numerical analysis on the backscattering amplitude for a partially buried cylinder on a flat interface. Suggested numerical analysis showed the good agreements with the measurements and the analytic solution obtained by the Kirchhoff approximation. Numerical analysis described in the current study can be applied to the backscattering problem of any shape of the objects partially imbedded on a seabed by combining the reverberation from the seabed with the scattered wave from the objects.
Flight vehicles such as wheel wells and bomb bays have many cavities. The flow around a cavity is characterized as an unsteady flow because of the formation and dissipation of vortices brought about by the interaction between the free stream shear layer and the internal flow of the cavity. The resonance phenomena can damage the structures around the cavity and negatively affect the aerodynamic performance and stability of the vehicle. In this study, a numerical analysis was performed for the cavity flows using the unsteady compressible three-dimensional Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equation with Wilcox's turbulence model. The Message Passing Interface (MPI) parallelized code was used for the calculations by PC-cluster. The cavity has aspect ratios (L/D) of 2.5 ~ 7.5 with width ratios (W/D) of 2 ~ 4. The Mach and Reynolds numbers are 0.4 ~ 0.6 and $1.6{\times}106$, respectively. The occurrence of oscillation is observed in the "shear layer and transient mode" with a feedback mechanism. Based on the Sound Pressure Level (SPL) analysis of the pressure variation at the cavity trailing edge, the dominant frequencies are analyzed and compared with the results of Rossiter's formula. The dominant frequencies are very similar to the result of Rossiter's formula and other experimental data in the low aspect ratio cavity (L/D = ~ 4.5). In the large aspect ratio cavity, however, there are other low dominant frequencies due to the leading edge shear layer with the dominant frequencies of the feedback mechanism. The characteristics of the acoustic wave propagation are analyzed using the Correlation of Pressure Distribution (CPD).
