  • This paper presents phenomena of vibration and noise due to acoustic resonance in tube bank of a power plant. Acoustic resonance is may arise when the vortex shedding frequency coincides with the acoustic natural frequency. At the resonance, the value of vibration in this system was 595 ${\mu}m$, p-p and the sound pressure level was maximum 103 dBA. And the resonance frequency was found to be 35 Hz. When the difference of vortex shedding frequency and acoustic natural frequency is within ${\pm}20%$, acoustic resonance is possible. In this system, the difference of these frequencies was 1.8%. We can evaluate the possibility of acoustic resonance by using damping parameter. We did eliminate acoustic resonance by installing baffle in tube bank. After installing baffle, the level of vibration and noise was reduced dramatically.

  • The noise and vibration have been evaluated by using the finite element model in the vehicle developing stage. The sound pressure of the vehicle compartment is predicted by the acoustic cavity model coupled with the body structure. In general, the structural model has been focused to study in the improvement of the noise. It is not easy to treat the structural model, instead the acoustic cavity model is relatively simple and aids in root cause analysis of vibro-acoustic issues. Therefore, the acoustic transfer function of the cavity is more efficient for finding out the main contribution parts of the vehicle booming noise. And examples about the run-up booming noise demonstrate the validity of the AFT analysis for improving the vibro-acoustic sensitivity.

  • The purpose of this paper was to identify the mechanism that caused abnormal vibration and noise on the piping system connected to discharge flow of BFP(Boiler Feed water Pump) in a coal fired power plant, and to develop the device that can reduce the level of abnormal vibration and noise. Major results of this project can be summarized as follows: First, we analyzed the acoustic mode for the discharge piping of BFP to trace a path of the noise, and assumed that noise and vibration on the piping system can be related with length of pipe. Second, a minimized model of the piping system was set up to simulate abnormal vibration and noise within the specific range of operating frequencies, and as a result we confirmed that the acoustic mode affected the piping system considerably. Finally the test device which can reduce the level of abnormal noise and vibration was built to verify validity applying for the piping system. Then we concluded that the noise and vibration generated from the piping system was attributed to the acoustic resonance in piping system, and so developed new device which can reduce the level of noise and vibration under 40%. Put Abstract here.

  • Power flow analysis(PFA) methods have shown many advantages in noise predictions and vibration analysis in medium-to-high frequency ranges. Applying the finite element technique to PFA has produced power flow finite element method(PFFEM) that can be effectively used for analysis of vibration of complicated structures. PFADS(power flow analysis design system) based on PFFEM as the vibration analysis program has been developed for vibration predictions and analysis of coupled structural systems. In this paper, to improve the function of vibro-acoustic coupled analysis in PFADS, the PFFEM has been extended for analysis of the interior noise problems in the vibro-acoustic fully coupled systems. The vibro-acoustic fully coupled PFFEM formulation based on energy coupled relations is extended to structural system model by using appropriate modifications to structural-structural, structural-acoustic and acoustic-acoustic joint matrices. It has been applied to prediction of the interior noise in two room model coupled with panels, and the PFFEM results are compared to those of statistical energy analysis(SEA).

  • This paper describes the correlation between the interior noise and the trunk wall vibration. Using the vibro-acoustic reciprocity, effect of the trunk wall vibration on the compartment noise is investigated on a medium size car. In the low frequency range, vehicle interior noise is dominated by several acoustic modes of the passenger compartment and the vibration modes of the surrounding shell parts. Especially, vibration of the trunk wall radiates sound and it is transferred through holes on the package tray into the passenger compartment. This paper experimentally reveals that sound can be well produced at some particular vibration modes of the trunk lid and it strongly influences the compartment noise through package tray holes. Contributions of the trunk walls to the interior noise are estimated by measuring the acoustic-structural transfer function, based on the vibro-acoustical reciprocity theorem.

  • The simple motor construction and low cost, fault tolerant power electronic drive has made the switched reluctance drive a strong contender for many applications. But the switched reluctance drive does exhibit higher levels of vibration and acoustic noise than that of most competing drives. The main source of vibration in the switched reluctance drive is generated by rapid change of radial magnetic force when phase current is extinguished during commutation action. In this paper, a hybrid excitation method is proposed to reduce vibration and acoustic noise of the switched reluctance drive. The hybrid excitation has 2-phase excitation by long dwell angle as well as conventional 1-phase excitation. The vibration and acoustic noise are reduced because the scheme reduces abrupt change of excitation level by distributed and balanced excitation.

  • This paper presents phenomena of vibration and noise due to acoustic resonance in tube bank of a HRSG. Acoustic resonance is may arise when the vortex shedding frequency coincides with the acoustic natural frequency. At this tube bank, dominant frequencies of vibration in this system were 43.5, 67.5㎐. The 3$\^$rd/ acoustic natural frequency calculated was 68.5㎐. When the difference of vortex shedding frequency and acoustic natural frequency is within ${\pm}$20%, acoustic resonance could occur. In this system, in order to prevent acoustic resonance, acoustic baffle was installed in the tube bank before operating. But acoustic resonance occurred. So, we evaluate the effect of acoustic mode due to baffle extension length. After investigating, we did revise acoustic baffle to eliminate acoustic resonance effectively.

  • Helical gear excitation is transmitted to a gearbox through the shafts and bearings and the vibration of the gearbox radiates the noise in the air. Therefore gearbox modeling is essential to evaluate the gear noise. This work deals with vibration and acoustic analysis of a cylindrical shell-type gearbox with/without holes excited by helical gears and focuses on the development of the simple gearbox model. To do so, helical gears and bearing forces are calculated. Gearbox with/without holes is modeled by the aluminum end plates and PMMA cylindrical shell body. The vibration mode and the forced harmonic response were calculated by the commercial FE software and the end plate of the gearbox is more contributed to vibration than the body. Acoustic analysis was also conducted by the commercial acoustic software and a cylindrical shell type gearbox with/without holes has the similar vibro-acoustic characteristics.

  • Noise sources in electric machines are broadly categorized as magnetic, mechanical, electronic and aerodynamic. Especially, there are several kinds of noise sources due to the change of reluctance by rotor position in IPM motor. To separate acoustic noise by mechanical structure and electromagnetic sources, resonance frequency and the effect of vibration and acoustic noise by electromagnetic sources are analyzed. And then, the structural and electromagnetic designs to reduce acoustic noise are performed. The relevance about the study on noise reduction of IPM motor is verified by noise experiment, noise and vibration analysis.
