  • Optical disk drive device is improved in rotating speed for faster data reading. In the case of CD-ROM, rotating speed is over 10000 rpm in the practical use. As a result of high rotating speed, unexpected effects as like increasing disk fluctuation and acoustic noise are raised by the air friction on the rotating disk and the eccentricity of rotating parts. The overall acoustic noise of running CD-ROM could be classified into two different characterized noise. The first is the structural-borne noise which is generated from vibrating solid body. By the reason, the signal of structural borne noise has very similar to the signal of surface vibrating one. It has dense noise energy at specific frequency region. The other is the air-borne noise which is generated from turbulence or vortex caused by friction between disk and air. The signal of air-borne noise has no dominant peak point at acoustic pressure-frequency domain. The noise energy is widely distributed while comparatively high and large frequency region. The structural-borne noise could be reduced by reducing vibration of structure and in addition it's target reducing frequency is narrow. However the air-borne noise reduction is effectively needed of enclosing method for the noise source located near the disk surface because it is difficult to define target frequency point. In this study, the acoustic noise at driving CD-ROM is classified by the sides of it's character and tried to reduce the overall acoustic noise.

  • Acoustic loads generated by a rocket propulsion system cause severe random vibrations on payloads. In developing a new launch vehicle, a random vibration level must be specified before the detailed design of payloads or electronic equipments. This paper deals with prediction procedures of a random vibration level on payload section of KSLV-I. The prediction is based on statistical energy analysis. In order to verify the prediction methodology, test and analysis on a sub-scale payload section are performed. The predicted results subject to very high level of acoustic loads show a good agreement with the test results performed in the high intensity acoustic chamber. The predicted random vibration level on payload section of KSLV-I is also presented in this paper.

  • Acoustic and aerodynamic characteristics of Cheju consonants were examined with the focus on the well-known three-way distinction among stops (i.e., lenis, fortis, aspirated) and the two-way distinction between sand s*. Acoustic parameters examined for the stops included VOT, relative stop burst energy, Fo at the vowel onset, H1-H2, and H1-F2 at the vowel onset. For the fricatives s and s*, acoustic parameters were fricative duration, Fo, centroid of the fricative noise, RMS energy of the frication, H1-H2 and Hl-F2 at the onset of the following vowel. In investigating aerodynamics, intraoral pressure and oral flow were included for the bilabial stops. Results indicate that, although Cheju and Korean are not mutually intelligible, acoustic and aerodynamic properties of Cheju consonants are very similar in every respect to those of the standard Korean. Among other findings there are three crucial points worth recapitulating. First, stops are systematically differentiated by the voice quality of the following vowel. Second, stops are also differentiated by aerodynamic mechanisms. The aspirated and fortis stops are similar in supralaryngeal articulation, but employ a different relation between intraoral pressure and flow. Finally, our study suggests that the fricative s is better categorized as 'lenis' than as 'aspirated' in terms of its phonetic realization.

  • Reinke's edema is used for describing varying degrees of chronic swelling of the vocal folds. The acoustic analysis of Reinke's edema has not been reported so far in this country. The purpose of this study is to clarify acoustic and aerodynamic characteristics of the Reinke's edema. Several acoustic evaluations & aerodynamic studies were done in 20 Reinke's edema patients and the data was compared with those of 20 normal controls. Videolaryngoscopy also was done to classify the severity in grading. We used C-Speech, Doctor speech science, and Phonatory function analyser. In C-Speech, we compared jitter, shimmer, and SNR(signal to noise ratio) of normal and Rrinke's edema patient. In Doctor speech science, we compared NNE(Glottal noise energy), speech fundamental frequency, voice quality between two groups. And in phonatory function analyser for aerodynamic function test, we compared speech intensity, airflow rate, and expiratory pressure between two groups. In conclusion, Reinke's edema patients showed lower voice pitches than normal, additionally jitter, shimmer, SNR(signal to noise ratio), NNE(Glottal noise energy), airflow rate, and expiratory pressure may be meaningful parameters for diagnosis and prognosis for treatment.

  • The purpose of this study was to propose a new approach for quantifying in situ rock mass damage, which would include a degree-of-damage and the degraded strength of a rock mass, along with its prediction based on real-time Acoustic Emission (AE) observations. The basic approach for quantifying in-situ rock mass damage is to derive the normalized value of measured AE energy with the maximum AE energy, called the degree-of-damage in this study. With regard to estimation of the AE energy, an AE crack source location algorithm of the Wigner-Ville Distribution combined with Biot's wave dispersion model, was applied for more reliable AE crack source localization in a rock mass. In situ AE wave attenuation was also taken into account for AE energy correction in accordance with the propagation distance of an AE wave. To infer the maximum AE energy, fractal theory was used for scale-independent AE energy estimation. In addition, the Weibull model was also applied to determine statistically the AE crack size under a jointed rock mass. Subsequently, the proposed methodology was calibrated using an in situ test carried out in the Underground Research Tunnel at the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute. This was done under a condition of controlled incremental cyclic loading, which had been performed as part of a preceding study. It was found that the inferred degree-of-damage agreed quite well with the results from the in situ test. The methodology proposed in this study can be regarded as a reasonable approach for quantifying rock mass damage.

  • This paper suggests that the onset-coda asymmetry found in languages like Korean and others should be dealt with in terms of one acoustic feature rather than other articulatory features, claiming that the acoustic feature involved here is [noise], i.e., 'aperiodic waveform energy'. It determines the structural well-formedness of the languages in question whether a coda ends in [noise] or not, regardless of the intensity, the frequency, and the time duration of the [noise]. Fricatives, affricates, aspirated stops, tense stops, and released stops are all disallowed in the coda position due to the acoustic feature [noise] they, commonly end with if they were, posited in the coda. The proposal implies that the three seemingly separate prohibitions of consonants in the coda position -- i) no fricatives/affricates, ii) no aspirated/tense stops, and iii) no released stops -- are directly correlated with each other. Incorporation of the one acoustic feature [noise] in the feature theory enables us to see that the aspects of onset-coda asymmetry are derived from one single source: ban, of [noise] in the coda.

  • In this research, the simulation method for acoustic sounds by a uniform flow around a two-dimensional circular cylinder by using the finite difference lattice Boltzmann model is explained. To begin with, we examine the boundary condition which determined with the distribution function $f_i^{(0)}$ concerning with density, velocity and internal energy at boundary node. Very small acoustic pressure fluctuation, with same frequency as that of Karman vortex street, is compared with the pressure fluctuation around a circular cylinder. The acoustic sound' propagation velocity shows that acoustic approa ching the upstream, due to the Doppler effect in the uniform flow, slowly propagated. For the do wnstream, on the other hand, it quickly propagates. It is also apparently the size of sound pressure was proportional to the central distance $r^{-1/2}$ of the circular cylinder. The lattice BGK model for compressible fluids is shown to be one of powerful tool for simulation of gas flows.
