  • In this paper, we convert underwater acoustic signal made by sonar system into digital image. We propose the algorithm that detects target candidate and emphasizes information of target introducing image processing technique for the digital image. The process detecting underwater target estimates background noise in underwater acoustic signal changing irregularly, recomposes it. and eliminates background from original image. Therefore, it generates initial target group. Also, it generates weighted map through proceeding doppler information, ensures information for target candidate through filtering using weighted map for image eliminated background noise, and decides the target candidate area in the single frame. In this paper, we verified that proposed algorithm almost had eliminated the noise generated irregularly in underwater acoustic signal made by simulation, targets had been displayed more surely in the image of underwater acoustic signal through filtering and process of target detection.

  • It is important to have a pipeline leak-detection system that determines the presence of a leak and quickly identifies its location. Current leak detection methods use a acoustic emission sensors, microphone arrays, and camera images. Recently, many researchers have been focusing on using cameras for detecting leaks. The advantage of this method is that it can survey a wide area and monitor a pipeline over a long distance. However, conventional methods using camera monitoring are unable to target an exact leak location. In this paper, we propose a method of detecting leak locations using leak-detection results combined with multi-frame analysis. The proposed method is verified by experiment.

  • Fracture of a cutting tool is one of the most serious problems in machining systems. Therefore, several methods have been proposed so far to detect cutting tool fracture. However, most of them have some problems from the viewpoint of practical applications. In this study, the feasibility of using acoustic emission and cutting force signals for the detection of massive tool breakages as well as small fracture of cutting tools were investigated. Turning experiments were performed using conventional carbide inset tools under realistic cutting conditions and the SM45C steel and heat treated SM45C steel were used as a workpiece. And the sensitivities of the AE and cutting force signals to the fracture of cutting tools were illustrated. Finally, a detection algortithm for the fracture of cutting tools was developed through the analysis of these dual signals in the several types of tool fracture.

  • This paper deals with a delay problem in the endpoint detection of double-talk detection algorithm using correlation coefficient in the acoustic echo canceller. In case that past power is much bigger than current power like at the end of double-talking period, the power, estimated using forgetting factor, decreases slowly to cause a delay problem in the endpoint detection. In this paper, two methods are proposed to solve this problem. One is that the current power is periodically replaced by a new average power and the other is that the past power in recursive equation is periodically removed or replaced by other values. The simulation results show that proposed methods outperform conventional method in the endpoint of double-talking periods without increasing the computational burden much more.

  • In this paper, we develop a speech interface that has acoustic echo cancelling and barge-in functionalities in the car environment. In the echo canceller, DT (Double-Talk) detection algorithm using the correlation coefficients between reference and desired signals can make DT detection errors often in the background noise. We reduce the DT detection errors by using the average power of noise and echo estimated from the input signal. In addition, to make it possible for drivers to give speech command to the system by interrupting the speaker output, barge-in functionality is implemented with the combination of DT detection and appropriate gain control of the speaker output. Through the computer simulation with the assumed car environment and experiment in the real laboratory environment, implemented speech interface has shown good performance in removing acoustic echo signals in the noisy environment with proper operation of barge-in functionality.

  • This study is devote to developing navigation filter for detecting sensor failure in multi-sensor navigation system. In multi-sensor navigation system, Kalman filter is generally used to fuse data of each sensors. Sensor failure is fatal in case that the sensor is used as external measurement of Kalman filter therefore detection and recovery of sensor failure is one the important feature of navigation filter. Generally each sensors have its specific feature in measuring navigational information. Fuzzy theory is proposed to detect external sensor failure and provide valid external measurement to Kalman filter avoiding filter divergence and instability. This idea is applied to Autonomous Underwater Vehicle(AUV) which has two navigation sensor i. e self contained inertial sensor and acoustic external sensor. 2 dimensional simulation result shows acceptable failure detection and recovery

  • Non-contact detection of internal defects in a rail using ultrasonic waves is discussed in this paper. Cracks in a rail may be a cause of a serious railway accident such as derailment if left undetected. Concurrent rail inspection method based on ultrasonic testing using piezoelectric transducers has several limitations as it should keep physical contact with the rail. This work suggests a non-contact detection of internal defects in a rail using ElectroMagnetic Acoustic Transducers (EMAT) which can produce and measure ultrasonic waves in a rail without any couplant. The EMATs for rail inspection are designed and fabricated and their working performance is verified through a series of experiments on various types of internal defects in test rails. The effect of lift-off between the transducers and the rail on the generated signals is also discussed.

  • Ultrasonic guided waves are gaining increasing attention for the inspection of platelike and rodlike structures. At the same time, inspection methods that do not require contact with the test piece are being developed for advanced applications. This paper capitalizes on recent advances in the areas of guided wave ultrasonics and noncontact ultrasonics to demonstrate a superior method for the nondestructive detection of thinning defects simulating hidden corrosion in thin aluminum plates. The proposed approach uses EMAT(electro-magnetic acoustic transducer) for the noncontact generation and detection of guided plate waves. Interesting features in the dispersive behavior of selected guided modes are used for the detection of plate thinning. It is shown that mode cutoff measurements provide a qualitative detection of thinning defects. Measurement of the mode group velocity can be also used to quantify of thinning depth.

  • Mechanical seals are one of main components of high speed centrifugal pumps. So, it is very important to detect the faults (scratch, notch, indentation, wear) of mechanical seals since the damage of seal can cause a critical failures or accidents of machinery system. In the past, many researchers mainly performed to detect the seal fault using the time signals measured from sensors. Recently, studies are focused on the development of on-line real time monitoring system. But study on the feature parameters used for fault detection of mechanical seals has a little been performed. In this paper, we showed feature parameters extracted from accelerated and acoustic signals by using the discrete wavelet transform (DWT), alpha coefficient, statistical parameters. And also verified the possibility for fault detection of mechanical seal.

  • Chatter Vibration is an unwanted phenomenon in metal cutting and it always affects surface finish, tool life, machine life and the productivity of machining process. The real-time detection of the chatter vibration is is necessarily required to automation system. In this study, we constructed the multi-sensing system using Tool Dynamometer, Accelermeter and AE sensor. Especially, Acoustic Emission(AE) generated during turning was investigated the possibility for real-time detection of chatter vibration. Turning experiments were performed using carbide insert tip under realistic cutting conditions and tapered workpiece of SM45C. Consquently, the real-time detection using multi-sensing system can be used for Inprocess monitoring of chatter vibration.
