  • Audiometric calibration is a prerequisite for securing the reliability of audiometric test results by checking the internal consistency of the relevant instrument. The purpose of this review is to help instrument operators understand the calibration procedure of aural acoustic immittance instrument which is frequently used for objective assessment. By referring to the latest international standards and the national standards relevant to the aural acoustic immittance instrument, the following parameters will be reviewed: 1) introduction of performance characteristics, 2) detailed procedure of the calibration method. According to the newest international and national standards [IEC 60645-5 (2004), ANSI S3.39-1987 (R2012)], the aural acoustic immittance instrument basically includes six components: 1) calibration cavity, 2) acoustic immittance analysis system, 3) probe assembly/unit and signal, 4) pneumatic air-pressure pump system, 5) acoustic reflex activator system and 6) tympanogram and acoustic reflex plotting system, each of these components should meet set standards. The result of behavioral hearing tests is influenced by various complex factors including the examinee's cooperation, background noise of the examination room, measurement method, skill level of the audiologist and calibration status, but the objective hearing tests is more influenced by the calibration status of the instrument than any other factors. The audiologist should take full responsibility for the reliability of the hearing test result, so he/she should carry out the calibration check and adjustments of aural acoustic immittance instrument periodically and maintain the instrument continuously by referring to the newest standards and the manufacturer's instruction manual.

  • Despite technological developments and application advances of Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCPs), no standard procedure has been adopted or accepted for calibration of ADCPs. Limitations of existing facilities for calibrating ADCPs, the complexity of ADCP instruments, and rapid changes in ADCP technology are some of the reasons why a standard procedure has not been adopted. However, there is increasing realization of the need for effective Quality Assurance (QA) and as part of that the importance of standardized calibration. In this study, the significance of calibration and QA plans for ADCPs is discussed and the calibration facilities for ADCPs at home and abroad are reported. Furthermore, the method for calibrating ADCPs using a towed car and its limitations are discussed. This study contributes to discussions surrounding the establishment of standard procedures for calibrating ADCPs and QA plans, and the construction of calibration facilities in the future.

  • This paper identifies the cause of the high frequency calibration limit of the acoustic chamber type calibrator for microphone calibration and presents a method to improve it. By using a commercial finite element analysis software, we analyzed the calibration frequency limit of the acoustic chamber type calibrator through eigen-frequency and frequency domain analysis. Based on this, we designed and fabricated an acoustic chamber type calibrator that can precisely calibrate within 1 dB from about 2 Hz to 6.4 kHz and verified its performance through experiments. The acoustic chamber type calibrator fabricated through this study has the advantage of being able to calibrate multiple microphones simultaneously in a wide frequency range, so it can be usefully used for simple calibration for multiple microphones.

  • Accelerometers have been exploited widely in various fields from monitoring vibration of precision machines to detecting an earthquake wave. The precision calibration of the accelerometers is required to maintain the measurement reliability when measuring the vibration of objects with accelerometers for modal analysis. Among evaluation factors for determining sensitivity of accelerometers, phase delay term should be also considered for accurate calibration. In this paper, a new calibration system of accelerometers capable of measuring phase delay as well as magnitude of its sensitivity was proposed and realized in the frequency range of 20 Hz to 5 kHz.

  • The relationship between the applied stresses and the change of elastic wave velocity has been established based on the acoustoelasticity theory. The non-uniform stress field in a loaded specimen has been evaluated from the surface acoustic wave velocity measured by the line-focus acoustic microscopy with the acoustoelastic constants obtained form a calibration test. The evaluated stresses are in good agreement with the results calculated by finite element method.

  • A Reference Sound Source (RSS) is an important standard device employed in measuring sound power. The specifications of RSS is specified in international standards, and it is classified as a major calibration item in the field of acoustic metrology. Since the output power of RSS is affected by the supply voltage, each country needs to secure its own calibration service system. In this study, a procedure for calibrating a RSS is established based on the reverberant room conditions and uncertainty evaluation is conducted. Basically, the calibration procedure can apply a precision measurement process of acoustic power, and here, the measurement method using the reverberation chamber of ISO 3741 is applied. For this purpose, a measurement system is constructed, measurements are conducted with two types of RSS, and measurement uncertainty is evaluated. Through measurement examples, it is confirmed that the non-uniformity of the sound pressure distribution in the reverberation room and the volume measurement uncertainty contributed significantly to the overall uncertainty. Additionally, the influence of input voltage is experimentally examined to examine the uncertainty contribution that can be reflected in acoustic power measurements.

  • This paper described about the acoustic wave measurement method to diagnose GIS for particles. We measured and analyzed the signals of acoustic waves with two type acoustic sensors having 125kHz and 50kHz resonant frequency respectively when the particles were bounced on the inside surfaces of GIS tanks by the electrostatic force. To use two sensors for the diagnosis of GIS, we set up the calibration method for this measurement method. We showed the output characteristics of two sensors according to the sizes and materials of particles in the experiment. As the results, the inception voltages bouncing particles depended on the materials and the extinction voltages bouncing them depended on the sizes and materials. We found out that the relationship between sizes of particles and output voltages of sensors didn't have linearity but the ratios of between peak values of two sensors depended on the materials of GIS enclosures and the sizes of particles.
