  • During atmospheric ascent of a launch vehicle, airborne acoustic loads act on the vehicle and its effect becomes pronounced at transonic speed. In the present study, acoustic loads acting on a hammerhead launch vehicle at a transonic speed have been analyzed using -ω SST based IDDES and the results including mean Cp, Cprms, and PSD are compared to available wind-tunnel test data. Mesh dependency of IDDES results has been investigated and it has been concluded that with an appropriate turbulence scale-resolving computational mesh, the characteristic flow features around a transonic hammerhead launch vehicle such as separated shear flow at fairing shoulder and its reattachment on rear body as well as large pressure fluctuation in the region of separated flow behind the boat-tail can be predicted with reasonable accuracy for engineering purposes.

  • The active sonar transmission system consists of a transmitter that outputs an electrical signal and an underwater acoustic transducer that converts the amplified electrical signal into an acoustic signal. In general, the transmitter output characteristics are dependent on load impedance, and an underwater acoustic transducer, which is a transmitter load, has a characteristic that the electrical impedance varies largely according to frequency when driven. In such a variable impedance condition, the output of the active sonar transmission system may become unstable. Hence, this paper proposes a design and control technique of a sonar transmitter for transmitting a stable transmission signal even under variable impedance conditions of an underwater acoustic transducer in an active sonar transmission system. The electrical impedance characteristics of the underwater acoustic transducer are experimentally analyzed, and the sonar transmitter is composed of a single-phase full-bridge inverter, an LC filter, and a matching circuit. In this paper, the design and output control method of the sonar transmitter is proposed to protect the transmitter and transducer. It can secure stable output voltage characteristics even if it transmits the Linear Frequency Modulation (LFM) signal. The validity is verified through the simulation and the experiment.

  • In order to evaluate the flying characteristics of slider, the acoustic emission (AE) as well as friction signals are typically utilized. In this work the frequency spectrum analysis is performed using the AE signal obtained during the head/disk interaction such as load/unload mechanism using ramp, impact situation in the presence of a bump on disk surface and other contact phenomena including particle interaction. It was shown that the influence of impact can be characterized effectively in the AE frequency spectrum. As a result of this work, frequency spectrum analysis will be utilized with better understanding for studying the head/disk interface (HDI) characteristics and monitoring the particle interaction in HDI effectively.

  • Fracture behaviors of pipes with local wall thinning are very important for the integrity of nuclear power plant. However, effects of local wall thinning on strength and fracture behaviors of piping system were not well studied. Acoustic emission(AE) has been widely used in various fields because of its extreme sensitivity, dynamic detection ability and location of growing defects. In this study, we investigated failure modes of locally wall thinned pipes and AE signals by bending test. From test results, we could be divided four types of failure modes of ovalization, crack initiation after ovalization, local buckling and crack initiation after local buckling. And fracture behaviors such as elastic region, yielding region, plastic deformation region and crack progress region could be evaluated by AE counts, accumulative counts and time-frequency analysis during bending test. The result of the frequency range is expected to be basic data that can inspect plants in real-time.

  • The object of this study is to investigate the effect of compounded welding by using acoustic emission (AE) signals fur weld heat affected zone (HAZ) in tensile testing. This study was carried out a SM 490A high tension steel for electronic shielded metal are welding (SMAW), $\textrm{CO}_2$ gas arc welding and TIG welding. And correspondingly, the root openings are 3, 4 and 2.8mm. Data displays are based on the measured parameters of the AE signals, along with environmental variables such as time and load. These history plots give us useful and powerful information to analyze the results of material evaluation testing.

  • The object of this study is to investigate a damage estimation of single edge cracked tensile specimens ($2_a$/W) as a function of acoustic emission (AE) according to the unidirectionally oriented carbon/epoxy composites, CFRP AE signals were analyzed and classified 3 regions by event counts, energy and amplitude for coressponding applied load. On tensile loading and using the results of the AE analysis, it was found that the event counts, cumulative counts or energy, and amplitude distributions useful for the prediction of damage failure.

  • In recent years, composite materials like CFRP are increasingly used in various fields of engineering because of their unique properties which offer a high strength/density and high modulus/density. When CFRP structures are manufactured in drilling processes which are frequently practiced in an Industry, they bring on the delaminations sometimes. So, acoustic emission(AE) techniques were used for a condition monitoring of the drilling process in CFRP. In this study, the AE from CFRP estimated the delamination which reduces the strength and load carrying capacity under the drilling process and the initial delamination were well caught and measured by a video camera. From the results, it was found the relationships between failure mechanism of CFRP delamination and AE characteristics as like amplitude and count.

  • Demands of high volume dry vacuum pumps on the domestic semiconductor and LCD industries are rapidly increasing as the size of wafers and LCD is increasing. This study introduces a new experimental setup for testing the reliability of vacuum pumps. The test system was designed to measure the acoustic pressure and mechanical vibration levels simultaneously. It is shown that the test system enables the analysis and evaluation of the performance of dry pumps under the different gas-load conditions. Detailed experimental result are shown to enable us to examine the characteristics and performance of dry pumps.

  • Measurement techniques for in-duct acoustic source parameters can be classified into the direct method and the load method, according to whether it utilizes an extra external source or not. It is reported that the load methods yield the negative source resistance and the purpose of this paper is to clarify that the time-varying nature of the source is the main cause of this physically implausible result. For this purpose, the direct and load methods for measuring the source characteristics of a simplified fluid machine are simulated using the time domain numerical analysis. In the numerical simulations, the method of characteristics is employed and the source characteristics are calculated from the resultant data. It is shown that the load method results in negative source resistance for some frequencies, whereas the direct method yields positive values for all frequencies considered. It is found that the result of load method is quite sensitive to the change of cylinder pressure or valve profile in contrast to the direct method.
