  • This study realizes the conceptual method to predict combustion instability in actual full-scale combustion chamber of rocket engines by experimental tests with model (sub-scale) chamber. The model chamber was designed based on the methodologies proposed in the previous work regarding geometrical dimensions and operating conditions, and hot-fire test procedures were followed to obtain stability boundaries. From the experimental tests, two instability regions are presented by the parameters of combustion-chamber pressure and mixture (oxidizer/fuel) ratio, which are customary for combustor designers. It is found that instability characteristics in the chamber with the adopted jet injectors can be explained by the correlation between the characteristic burning or mixing time and the characteristic acoustic time: In each instability region, dynamic behaviors of flames are investigated to verify the hydrodynamically-derived characteristic lengths of the jet injectors. Large-amplitude pressure oscillation observed in upper instability region is found to be generated by lifted-off flames.

  • This study was carried out to verify finding performance of dental diamond bur and investigate the possibility of AE application in density field. Work pieces were made of acryl and bovine respectively for the experiments in this study. Grinding test was conducted to get the data of grinding resistance and specific finding energy of low different types of diamond bur by using tool dynamometer. AE signal was acquired to verify grinding process in the AE measuring system. AErms value was increased as the grinding velocity and depth were increasing, but it decreased as the feed rate was increasing. The case of the small value of AE signal is due to abnormal grinding in D type diamond bur. By analyzing AErms start and finish time of grinding working, abnormal grinding state can be confined. Abnormal state can be found through the behavior of AE signal in the finding working. As a result, it is expected that forecast of abnormal state is possible using AE equipments under real time process.

  • A portable apparatus mounting Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCP) to any small boat was developed to effectively measure currents in shallow and narrow coastal seas like the west coasts of Korea. Characteristics of the apparatus is that an underwater fish-shaped body protecting an ADCP is designed to reduce the drag during the cruise, which can be freely mounted and detached from a boat with a clamp. Several cruise outputs prove themselves that the apparatus is properly designed for the intended purpose, to minimize air bubbles and to control the submerged depth of the sensor.

  • The phenomena called "combustion instabilities" in a solid-propellant rocket motor may be viewed as sustaining or amplifying pressure waves. Energy is supplied by combustion processes near the surface of the burning propellant. T-burner method is used to determine the response function of the propellant to the pressure wave. But initial tests were failed because of the Helmholtz resonation inside the T-burner. Acoustic analysis of the original T-burner is carried out and suppression techniques for the Helmholtz oscillation are introduced.ntroduced.

  • The unsteady flow characteristics and the related noise of separated incompressible laminar boundary layer flows (Re$\sub$$\delta$/* = 614, 868, and 1,063) are numerically investigated. The characteristic lines of the wall pressure are examined to identify the primary noise source, related with the unsteady motion of the vortex at the reattachment point of the separation bubble. The generation and propagation of the vortex-induced noise in the separated laminar boundary layer are computed by the method of Computational Aero-Acoustics (CAA), and the effects of Reynolds number, Mach number and adverse pressure gradient strength are examined.

  • The thermoacoustic refrigerator bas not only considerable possibility but also commercial usability, because it bas high reliability, lower vibration, no moving part, and can easily be constructed. In this study, the resonance characteristics of the thermoacoustic refrigerator were investigated for better performance, varying length of the resonance tube to 400mm, 500mm, 600mm, 700mm. In order to determine the optimum resonance tube length and the frequency, the $\lambda/4$ thermoacoustic engine and the similar apparatus of Wheatly type refrigerator were constructed. It was used air as a coolant. in the fifth harmonic, it was taken the highest ${\Delta}t$ that was $56.3^{\circ}C$ at 626Hz in 400mm tube with 40mm stack.

  • The purpose of this study was to provide preliminary data on the acoustical differences of one syllable words spoken by speakers with different language backgrounds. 20 native speakers of Korean and English were asked to read 7 one-syllable words written in their native language. The phonetic and phonemic characteristics of 7 words were similar between two languages. The ratio of duration of the body (onset+nucleus) and the rhyme(nucleus+coda) relative to the duration of each syllable were calculated using CSL (Computerized Speech Laboratory). The results corresponds to the body-coda structure of the Korean syllable which is supported by the recent experimental psychological studies. More acoustic studies on the Korean syllable structure are required to establish clinical foundation for the phonological awareness and the reading intervention programs.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate and quantitatively describe the acoustic characteristics of current Korean monophthongs. Recordings were made of 33 men and 27 women producing the vowels /i, e, ${\varepsilon}$, a, (표현불가), O, u, (표현불가)/ in a carrier phrase "This character is _." A listening test was conducted in which 19 participants judged each vowel. F1, F2, and F3 were measured from the vowels judged as intended vowels by more than 17 people from the listening test. Analysis of formant data shows some interesting results including the undeniable confirmation of 7-vowel system in current Korean.

  • A study of the possible axisymmetric modes that propagate at low frequencies in buried, water-filled pipes is presented. It is well known that for a vacuum-pipe-vacuum system the sole non-torsional axisymmetric mode that exists at low frequencies is the fundamental L(0,1) mode. When a pipe is filled with water and still surrounded by a vacuum it is also known that another mode then appears which at low frequencies is characterized by predominantly axial water-borne displacements. In addition to these modes. this paper explores two other, less well known axisymmetric modes whose exitence depends on the acoustic properties of the outer medium that surrounds a pipe. The predicted characteristics of these modes are presented and the likelihood of them propagating over any significant distance in a buried water pipe is discussed.

  • Drilling is one of the most important operations performed in the machining industry. And the material of the workpiece has a profound effect on the tool life, the surface finish produced and the overall economy of the process. Hot-rolled high strength steels have been used for automobile structural material, owing to high hardness and machinability of the material. However, in the drilling of hot-rolled high strength steels, the current knowledge of tool wear and machinability are insuf-ficient. There, it is desirable to monitor drill wear status and hole quality changes during the hole drilling process. Accordingly, this paper deals with the cutting characteristics of the hot-rolled high strength steels using common HSS drill. The performance variables include the drilling thrust, torque and drill wear data obtained from drilling experiments con-ducted on the workpiece. Also drill were is measured by acoustic emission system and computer vision system.
