  • Cadmium (Cd) has been identified as a potential contaminant in agricultural and environmental soils. Ionic condition in the soils is an important factor to influence Cd availability. In this study, the effect of sulfate or nitrate application on Cd sorption in acidic and calcareous soils was investigated. The Cd, sulfate $(SO_4)$, and nitrate $(NO_3)$ sources were solutions of $CdCl_2$, $K_2SO_4$, and $KNO_3$, respectively. The soil-solution system pH was affected by the application of sulfate or nitrate in both acidic and calcareous soil system, but there was not clear pH difference between pre- and simultaneous applications of sulfate or nitrate (PAS/PAN or SAS/SAN). Solution ionic strength (I) values were similar between the acid and calcareous soil systems after applying the Cd even though it was significantly different in the untreated control soils. However after applying the sulfate or nitrate, the I values increased and were always higher with SAS/SAN treatments. Solution Cd concentration also increased with the application of sulfate or nitrate. However, the Cd concentration in soil solution controlled by Cd sorption in the systems was different between PAS/PAN and SAS/SAN treatments only in the calcareous soil system, but not in the acidic soil system. The difference in Cd concentration between SAS/SAN and PAS/PAN in the calcareous systems may be caused by system pH, ionic strength, complexation, and predominately, competition of the $Cd^{2-}$ with the index $K^+$ ion. Potassium ion-Cd competition in the acidic soil system may be minimized because of the abundance of hydrogen ions.

  • A method for the determination of acidic drug, mefenamic acid and ibuprofen with ion-selective electrode(ISE) using Fe(II)-di-2-pyridyl ketone oxime complex as a counter ion were developed. Benzyl-2-nitrophenyl ether(BNPE) plasticized membrane was more selective and sensitive than the other tested membranes. The acidic drug selective electrode exhibits a linear response for 10$^{-2}$ M 510$^{-5}$ M of acidic drugs, mefenamic acid and ibuprofen with a slope of -55.9 and -56.3 mV/dec. in borate buffer solution (pH 8.9). Potentiometric selectivity measurements revealed negligible interferences from aromatic and aliphatic carboxylic acid salts. The electrodes were found to be useful for the direct determination of mefenamic acid and ibuprofen in pharmaceutical preparations.

  • The influence of carbon surface area, carbon-oxygen groups associated with the carbon surface and the solution pH on the adsorption of Pb(II) ions from aqueous solutions has been studied using three activated carbons. The adsorption isotherms are Type I of BET classification and the data obeys Langmuir adsorption equation. The BET surface area has little effect on the adsorption while it is strongly influenced by the presence of acidic carbon oxygen surface groups. The amount of these surface groups was enhanced by oxidation of the carbons with different oxidizing agents and reduced by eliminating these groups on degassing at different temperatures. The adsorption of Pb(II) ions increases on each oxidation and decreases on degassing the oxidized carbons. The increase in adsorption on oxidation has been attributed to the formation of acidic carbon-oxygen surface groups and the decrease to the elimination of these acidic surface groups on degassing. The adsorption is also influenced by the pH of the aqueous solution. The adsorption is only small at pH values lower than 3 but is considerably larger at higher pH values. Suitable mechanisms consistent with the adsorption data have been suggested.

  • The effects of texturing and anti-reflection coating on the reflection properties of multi-crystalline silicon solar cell have been investigated. The chemical solutions of alkaline and acidic etching solutions were used for texturing at the surface of multi-crystalline Si wafer. Experiments were performed with various temperature and time conditions in order to determine the optimized etching condition. Alkaline etching solution was found inadequate to the texturing of multi-crystalline Si due to its high reflectance of about 25%. The reflectance of Si wafer texturing with acidic etching solution showed a very low reflectance about 10%, which was attributed to the formation of homogeneous. Also, deposition of ITO anti-reflection coating reduced the reflectance of multi-crystalline si etched with acidic solution($HF+HNO_3$) to 2.6%.

  • In this study, the effect of an acidic treatment on granular activated carbon (GAC) and activated carbon fibers (ACF) was investigated for a $Pb^{2+}$ and $Ni^{2+}$ ion adsorption. 1.0 M nitric acid solution was used as the acid solution for the surface treatment. Surface properties of the GAC and ACF were characterized by the pH, elemental analysis and pHpzc (pH of the point of zero charge). Their specific surface area and the pore structure were also evaluated by the nitrogen adsorption data at 77K. As a result, the acidic treatment led to an increase of the oxygen-containing functional groups. Furthermore, the adsorption capacity of the acid-treated GAC and ACF was improved in the order of acidic-ACF > untreated-ACF > acidic-GAC > untreated-GAC, though the decrease in specific surface area induced by a pore blocking of the functional groups was observed.

  • An electrolyzed-acidic water treatment was investigated as a methods for removing ammonia, which is a cause of odor in life environment. The prepared electrolyzed-acidic water was found out as stable solvent capable of neutralizing weak alkaline ammonia by measuring changes in pH and ORP. It was found out that ammonia was removed from the mixture solution of electrolyzed-acidic water and ammonia water by the UV-vis absorbance analysis and electrochemical open-circuit potential measurement. The neutralized ammonia by electrolyzed-acidic water and effectively removed odor was measured using ammonia gas detecter. Consequently, we recommend the electrolyzed-acidic water can effectively and safely remove ammonia in eco-friendly.

  • The nature of the two isomers of 4-nitroazoxybenzenes in strongly acidic solution have been analyzed by U.V. spectrophotometry. Oxygen atom in the azoxy-group of $\alpha$-and $\beta$-4-nitroazoxybenzene in strong acid solution migrates neither to para position nor ortho position of the unsubstituted benzene ring of the compound in contrast with the cases of methyl-and bromo-substituted azoxybenzene, and shown no Wallach rearrangement. Since the $^1A{\rightarrow}^1H$ bands of the spectra shown hyperchromic effect whereas the ${\pi}{\rightarrow}{\pi}^*$ bands of them exhibit extream hypochromic effect, it appears most likely that trans ${\rightarrow}$cis isomerization take place in the media. A mechanism of a triangular transition state by which the transformation might be proceeded, is proposed.

  • Acidic substances contained in asphalt are affect upon emulsitiability of asphalt and its adhesion with aggregates, and therfore, detemination of acidity of asphalt is of important one. However, there has not been established a method of precisely determining the acidity of asphalt. This paper reports on an improved color-indicator titration method, by which the acid number of asphalt is determined. By treating benzene solution of asphalt with alcohol, acidic constituents were selectively extracted into alcohol solution, while asphaltic matters precipitated. A color-indicator titration method then was applied to the resultant faint-colored solution. The change of color at end point was clearly observed, and the results were obtained with good reproductivity and checked well with the results by the I.P. 177/64 method. Alcohols having not more than three cabon atoms have been found suitable for extraction.
