  • As the energy consumption increases continuously, the emission amount of air pollutants is growing, and after all it can influence the global environment as welt as the regional atmosphere. So, the clean energy which emits less air pollutants should be developed and widely used to reduce emission of pollutants. Electricity, known for clean energy in the side of consumption, is not actually clean in the process of generation. Electric power is generated using fossil fuels which produce acidic gases like $SO_{2}$, $NO_{x}$, etc. The emission rates of $SO_{2}$, $NO_{x}$, $CO_{2}$ are 2g,0.78g and 1 l0g per electric power generating Ikwh. If one light(60 watt bulb) be turned off at each house for a month electricity will be saved about 1.Skillion kwh a year. This is almost the same as 4,170 tons of $SO_{2}$ and $NO_{x}$. As a result the economization of electricity will be one of the effective strategy to reduce the air pollution and to keep our life clean and comfortable.

  • Efficient catalytic systems, where Ni or Pd is introduced in a supporting material of nanoporous carbon, have been developed for a liquid-phase hydrogenation of carboxylic acids and ketones at room temperature. It has been found that the catalysts reliably show high activities and selectivities for the hydrogenation to alcohols even in acidic conditions, and the catalytic activities depend on the preparative method of catalysts, the hydrogen pressure, the agitation rate, and the catalytic species. The hydrogenation of carboxylic acids and ketones clearly shows that the reaction rate is affected by the electronic and the steric effects, and a plausible reaction mechanism using metal hydrides as catalytic species is proposed.

  • Pathogenic bacteria that colonize the human intestinal tract have evolved strategies to overcome acidic conditions when they pass through the gastrointestinal tract. Amino acid-mediated acid resistance systems are effective survival strategies in a stomach that is full of amino acid substrate. The amino acid antiporter, amino acid decarboxylase, and ClC chloride antiporter are all engaged in these systems, and each one plays a role in protecting against or adapting to the acidic environment. The ClC chloride antiporter, a member of the ClC channel family, eliminates negatively charged intracellular chloride ions to avoid inner membrane hyperpolarization as an electrical shunt of the acid resistance system. In this review, we will discuss the structure and function of the prokaryotic ClC chloride antiporter of amino acid-mediated acid resistance system.

  • The objective of this study was to determine the resistance of Cronobacter sakazakii in acidic environments. The D-values of CAFM2 (ATCC 29544), EB 1, EB 5, and EB 41 at pH 2.5 in TSB were significantly (p<0.05) higher when cells were adapted at pH 4.5 in TSB for 5-h then when cells were not adapted at pH 4.5 in TSB. The D-values of CAFM2, EB1, and EB 41 at pH 2.5 in TSB were significantly (p<0.05) higher when cells were adapted at pH 4.5 in TSB for 10-h then when cells were not adapted at pH 4.5 in TSB. The D-values of CAFM2 and EB1 at pH 2.5 in TSB were significantly (p<0.05) higher when cells were adapted at pH 4.5 in TSB for 24-h then when cells were not adapted at pH 4.5 in TSB. The adaptation of C. sakazakii to mild acidic environments may result in increased resistance to severe acidic environments. The D-values of all test strains at pH 2.5 in TSB were significantly (p<0.05) higher when cells were cultured at pH 4.5 then when they were cultured at pH 7.2 in TSB. These data indicate that cells cultured in mildly acidic environments may result in increased resistance to severe acidic environments. The acid adaptation of C. sakazakii showed an increased resistance to acidic environments. The acid adaptation response of C. sakazakii has important implications for food safety, which should be considered when food preservation measures are developed.

  • In line with the Super Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (SULEV) regulation, the main idea in this study has been focused on the utilization of hydrocarbon adsorber (HCA) to adsorb the excess hydrocarbons emitted during a period of engine cold-start, As main recipes of HCA materials, many types of zeolite as well as the combination of alumina and precious metals were used, Representative physico-chemical factors of zeolite such as acidic and hydrophobic properties were characterized. The optimum recipe of HCA materials was also determined. Among the acid properties of zeolites, the Si/Al ratio was found to be the most important factor to get higher hydrocarbon adsorption capacity.

  • Mineral assemblages, mineral chemistries and stable isotope compositions of altered rocks of the Ogmae, Seongsan, Haenam and Gusi mines near the Haenam volcanic field in the southwestern part of the Korea peninsula were studied. Characteristic hydrothermal alteration zones in these deposits occurring in the Cretaceous volcanics and volcanogenic sediments, acidic tuff, and rhyolite, were outlined. Genetic environment with particular reference to the spatial and temporal relationships for these deposits were considered. The alteration zones defined by a mineral assemblage in the Ogmae and Seongsan deposits can be classified as alunite, pyrophyllite, kaolinite or dickite, quartz, illite or illite/smectite. Alunite was not developed in the Gusi and Haenam deposits. Boundaries between the adjacent zones are always gradational except for vein-type alunite. Alteration zones are superimposed upon each other in some localities. These deposits formed $71.8{\pm}2.8{\sim}76.6{\pm}2.9$ Ma ago, which is the almost same age of later volcanic rocks $79.4{\pm}1.7{\sim}82.8{\pm}1.2$ Ma, the Haenam Group, corresponding to Campanian. It indicates that hydrothermal alteration of these deposits appeared to be related to felsic volcanism in the area. Consideration of the stability between kaolinite, alunite, pyrite and pyrophyllite, and the geothermometry based on the mineral chemistry of illite and chlorite suggests that the maximum formation temperature for alunite and pyrophyllite can be estimated at about $250^{\circ}C$ and $240{\sim}290^{\circ}C$, respectively. It also suggests that these deposits were formed by acidic sulfate solution with high aqueous silica and potassium activity in a shallow depth environment. Compositional variation of alunite also suggests that the physico-chemical conditions fluctulated considerably during alteration processes, indicating shallow depth environment. The Haenam deposit was formed at a relatively greater depth than the others. The sulfur isotope composition of alunite and pyrite indicates that sulfur probably had a magmatic source, and the oxygen isotope composition for kaolinite indicates that the magmatic hydrothermal solution was diluted by circulating meteoric water.

  • Construction development and greenhouse gas emissions have globally required a strategic management to take some steps to stain and maintain the environment. Nowadays, recycled aggregates, in particular ceramic waste, have been widely used in concrete structures due to the economic and environmentally friendly solution, requiring the knowledge of recycled concrete. Also, one of the materials used as a substitute for concrete cement is wollastonite mineral to decrease carbon dioxide (CO2) from the cement production process by reducing the concrete consumption in concrete. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of wollastonite on the mechanical properties and durability of conventional composite concrete, containing recycled aggregates such as compressive strength, tensile strength (Brazilian test), and durability to acidic environment. On the other hand, in order to determine the strength and durability of the concrete, 5 mixing designs including different wollastonite values and recovered aggregates including constant values have been compared to the water - cement ratio (w/c) constant in all designs. The experimental results have shown that design 5 (containing 40% wollastonite) shows only 6.1% decrease in compressive strength and 4.9% decrease in tensile strength compared to the control plane. Consequently, the use of wollastonite powder to the manufacturing of conventional structural concrete containing recycled ceramic aggregates, in addition to improving some of the properties of concrete are environmentally friendly solutions, providing natural recycling of materials.

  • In this study, we demonstrate the effects of the acidic properties of montmorillonite (MMT), which is commonly used as a catalyst, on the conversion and selectivity of the dimer acid methyl ester (DAME) synthesis. We synthesize DAME by the dimerization of conjugated linoleic acid methyl ester (CLAME) and oleic acid methyl ester using MMT KSF. Incidentally, trimer acid methyl ester was formed as a by-product during the DAME synthesis. There is a necessity to adequately adjust the strength and quantity of the acid site to control the selectivity of DAME. Therefore, we vary the pH of the MMT acid by using various metal hydroxides. The purpose of this study is to increase the yield of monocyclic dimer acid methyl ester, which is a substance with adequate physical properties for industrial applications (e.g., lubricant and adhesive, etc.), using a heterogeneous catalyst. We report the dimerization of fatty acid methyl ester by using base treated-KSF, and apply it to conjugated soybean oil methyl ester. Then, we transmute the acid site properties of KSF, such as pH of 5 wt.% slurry KSF and various alkali metals (Li, Na, K, Ca). Characterization of base treated-KSF using a pH meter, x-ray diffraction, inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometer, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface analysis, and temperature-programmed desorption. We conduct an analysis of CLAME and DAME using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, gas chromatography, and gel permeation chromatography. Through these experiments, we demonstrate the effects of the acidic properties of KSF on the conversion and selectivity of the DAME synthesis, and evaluate its industrial potential by application to waste vegetable oil.

  • The fluxes of wet deposition(WD), throughfall(TF), stemflow(SF) and soil leachates were measured to understand base cation budgets on deciduous ecosystem impacted by acidic deposition in the north-western part of Tomakomai in Hokkaido, Japan. The flux of $H^{+}$ for wet deposition was $0.34kmo1_{c}$ $ha^{2+}$ and the flux of base cation, $K^{+}$ /, Na$^{ + }$, $Ca^{2+}$ and $Mg^{2+}$ far throughfall plus stemflow wart 1.6 kmolc $ha^{-1}$ , 3 times higher level than that for wet deposition. The flux of base cation for canopy leaching(LI) was 0.95 kmolc ha$^{-1}$ , 2.8 times higher level than $H^{+}$ sources in wet deposition. The major mechanism of $^{+}$ consumption closely related to acidic neutralizing capacity of canopy. The ionic flux for soil leachates from Boil reservoir and proton consumption in soil was dependent on soil chemical states and exchangeable Ca in soil had a major factor of H$^{+ }$ consumption. The base cation budgets on deciduous ecosystem showed positive balance fur Na, Ca and Mg, while K was the negative value.

  • A new multi inner stage(MIS) cyclone was designed to remove the acidic gas and minute particles of harmful materials produced from electronic industry. To characterize gas flow in MIS cyclone, pressure and velocity distribution were calculated by means of computational fluid dynamics(CFD) commercial program. Also, the flow locus of particles and particle removal efficiency were analyzed by Lagrangian method. When outlet pressure condition was -1,000 Pa, the efficiency was the best in this study. Based on the CFD simulation result, the pressure loss and destruction removal efficiency was measured through MIS cyclone experiment.
