  • We previously reported a 27.12 MHz inductively coupled plasma source at atmospheric pressure for atomic emission spectrometry based on polymer microchip plasma technology. For the PDMS polymer microchip plasma, molecular emission was observed, but no metallic detection was done. In this experiment, a lab-made electrothermal vaporizer (ETV) with tantalum coil was connected to the microchip plasma for aqueous sample introduction to detect metal ions. The electrode geometry of this microchip plasma was redesigned for better stability and easy monitoring of emission. The plasma was operated at an rf power of 30-70 W using argon gas at 300 mL/min. Gas kinetic temperatures between 800-3200 K were obtained by measuring OH emission band. Limits of detection of about 20 ng/mL, 96.1 ng/mL, and 1.01 μ g/mL were obtained for alkali metals, Zn, and Pb, respectively, when 10 μ L samples in 0.1% nitric acid were injected into the ETV.

  • There has been a number of research on concrete durability. specially, as a research on chemical ingression, the research on the degradation against acid, alkali, and sulfate has been conducted. On the other hand, for the research on oils, especially, the influence of various oils on cement mortar with Supplementary Cementitious Materials(SCMs) is not sufficiently studied. hence, in this research, the degradation of cement mortar incorporated fly ash and blast furnace slag is researched when the cement mortar is submerged in various oils. For the result of experiment, as the content of fatty acid in the oils, the degradation of cement mortar with SCMs was occurred more, and the cement mortar with SCMs suffered more degradation than the ordinary portland cement regarding the oil submerging.

  • We have studied the catalytic combustion of soot particulates over perovskite-type oxides prepared by malic acid method, The catalysts were modified to enhance the activity by substitution of metal into A or B site of perovskite oxide. In addition, the reaction conditions such as temperature and $O_2$ concentration were investigated. The partial substitution of alkali metals into A site in the $LaMnO_3$ catalyst, enhanced the catalytic activity in the combustion of carbon particulate and the activity was shown in the order: Cs > K > Na. For the $La_{1-x}Cs_{x}MnO_{3}$ catalysts, the catalytic activity showed the maximum value with x=0.3 but no more increase on the catalytic activity was shown with x > 0.3. For the $La_{0.8}Cs_{0.2}MnO_{3}$ catalyst, the substitution of Fe or Ni increased the ignition temperature. The ignition temperature decreased with an increase of $O_2$ concentration, however, no more increase in the catalytic activity was shown with $O_2$ concentration > 0.2. The introduction of NO into reactants showed no effect on the catalytic activity.

  • Currently, Ash-free clean coal producing process by solvent extraction is under development. The produced ash-free clean coal can be directly combusted in a gas turbine which results in substantial improvement of power generation efficiency. However, the clean coal produced by the solvent extraction still contain trace amount of alkali metal which may cause corrosion on turbine blades during the direct combustion. In present work ${\alpha},{\beta}$-metal (Zr and Ti) phosphates and H-Y zeolite were synthesized and their ion exchange characterizations were investigated for the application on alkali metal removal for clean coal production. $Na^+$ ion removal capacities of the metal phosphates and H-Y zeolite were measured and compared in both aqueous solution (100 ppmw, $Na^+$) and coal dissolved N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP, 12 ppmw $Na^+$) at elevated temperature. In aqueous solution, the ${\beta}$ form metal phosphates showed very high ion exchange capacities compared to ${\alpha}$ form. ${\beta}$ form metal phosphates also showed higher $Na^+$ removal capacities than H-Y zeolite. In ion exchange medium of NMP, all the ${\alpha}$ form metal phosphates showed over 90% of $Na^+$ ion removal efficiency in the temperature range of 200 to 400 while that of H-Y zeolite decreased as a half when the temperature was over 350. In addition, the regenerated metal phosphates by acid treatment showed no sign of degradation in $Na^+$ removal efficiency. Among the metal phosphates used, $Zr_{0.75}Ti_{0.25}(HPO_4)_2$ showed the best performance in $Na^+$ removal and is expected to be the most suitable inorganic ion exchanger for the alkali metal removal process.

  • This study investigated the effect of chemical treatments on tannins (condensed and hydrolysable) and on the trypsin inhibitor (TI) activity in salseed meal. Triplicate samples of ground salseed meal (1 kg) were mixed with 820 ml of either distilled water (pH 5.3), 0.67 M acetic acid (pH 2.4), 0.67 M sodium bicarbonate (pH 8.2) or 2% polyvinyl-pyrrolidone (PVP) solution. The material was placed in airtight plastic containers and incubated at $37^{\circ}C$ for 0, 3, 6, 12, 24, 48 and 72 h. Samples of untreated salseed meal which had not been subjected to soaking or incubation were run through the analysis to serve as control. Addition of water, acetic acid, sodium bicarbonate and PVP solutions to salseed meal and subsequent anaerobic incubation at $37^{\circ}C$ significantly reduced chemically detectable tannins. At each incubation time, alkali solution was more effective than its counterparts. The effect of acidic solution on hydrolysable tannin was least among the treatments. All the treatments reduced TI activity of salseed meal. The reduction in TI activity by these treatments was similar and ranged between 80-84%. Treatment time effected a decrease in the contents of antinutritional substances. However, the effect of the treatment with the reagents, even for zero incubation time, was quite pronounced. It may be concluded from the present results that the treatment of salseed meal with sodium bicarbonate (0.67 M) is more effective in reducing hydrolysable and condensed tannin contents than PVP, water and acid solutions. Treatment with sodium bicarbonate solution is more economical and easier to handle than acid and PVP treatments. Incubation of the treated material for 12 h is reasonably effective, economical and safe from any mould growth.

  • BACKGROUND: Recent studies using various industrial wastes for heavy metal stabilization in soil were conducted in order to find out new alternative amendments. The acid mine drainage sludge(AMDS) contains lots of metal oxides(hydroxides) that may be useful for heavy metal stabilization not only waste water treatment but also soil remediation. The aim of this study was to investigate the applicability of acid mine drainage sludge for heavy metals stabilization in soils METHODS AND RESULTS: Alkali soil contaminated with heavy metals was collected from the agricultural soils affected by the abandoned mine sites nearby. Three different amounts(1%, 3%, 5%) of AMDS were applied into control soil and contaminated soil. For determining the changes in the extractable heavy metals, $CaCl_2$ and Mehlich-3 were applied as chemical assessments for metal stabilization. For biological assessments, lettuce(Lactuca sativa L.) and chinese cabbage(Brassica rapa var. glabra) were cultivated and accumulation of heavy metals on each plant were determined. It was revealed that AMDS reduced heavy metal mobility and bioavailability in soil, which resulted in the decreases in the accumulation of As, Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn in each plant. CONCLUSION: Though the high level of heavy metal concentrations in AMDS, any considerable increase in the heavy metal availability was not observed with control and contaminated soil. In conclusion, these results indicated that AMDS could be applied to heavy metal contaminated soil as an alternative amendments for reducing heavy metal mobility and bioavailability.

  • In order to prevent the blackening and texture softening of heated shrimp, the pH was adjusted by soaking shrimps in acidic and alkali solutions, and their qualities were evaluated. The lightness of shrimps pretreated with 0.2% (w/w) citric acid and 0.05% (w/w) ascorbic acid solution increased by 20% compared to that of the control. The strength of mechanical hardness of shrimps soaked in acetic acid and phosphate solution (pH 6.0) was significantly higher ($1209g_f$) compared to that of untreated shrimp ($801g_f$; p<0.05), and the overall preference of texture was 0.4 points higher than that of the control in the descriptive sensory evaluation (p<0.05). In contrast, soaking in solution of pH 8 exhibited a weak texture hardening effect ($855g_f$). Additionally, the hardness of the heated shrimp after soaking at an adjusted pH of 4.0 increased to $4046g_f$, but the yield based on weight decreased to 38% compared to that of untreated shrimp (70%; p<0.05).

  • The protein composition of abalone muscle was estimated with the following result: on a series of samples analyzed, water-soluble protein, $19\~22\%$, salt-soluble protein, $27\~39\%$: alkali-soluble protein, $20\~26\%$ : and stroma $20\~28\%$ : respectively. It was demonstrated by ultracentrifugal analysis that approximately $65\%$ of the salt-soluble protein is accounted for by paramyosin, $30\%$ by actomyosin, and $5\%$ by myosin, respectively. The ultracentrifugally homogenous paramyosin was prepared by BAILEY's ethanol-dried method. It showed a $S^{\circ}\;_{20,\;{\omega}$ of 3.14s, and was completely salted in with KCl beyond $0.35{\mu}$. The intrinsic viscosity at $25^{\circ}C$ was estimated at 3.1. The paramyosin is rich in several amino acids such as arginine, aspartic acid, glutamic acid, etc., and lacking of both proline and tryptophane, in rough accord with other paramyosins reported. The abalone paramyosin did not show ATPase activity over a pH range of 5 to 9,5 even in the presence of Ca++ or Mg++. So was the case with the paramyosin specimen prepared by BAILEY's wet-extraction method.

  • Potassium tannate (TA-K), which is prepared by base treatment of the bio-renewable tannic acid (TA), was evaluated for its potential application as a draw solute for water purification by forward osmosis. The forward osmosis and recovery properties of TA-K were systematically investigated. In the application of forward osmosis through the active layer facing feed solution (AL-FS) method, the water flux of TA-K draw solution was significantly higher than that of the TA draw solution, while that of the latter was not identified. At a low concentration of 100 mM, the osmotic pressure (1,135 mOsmol/kg) of the TA-K draw solution was approximately 6.5 times that (173 mOsmol/kg) of the NaCl draw solution. Furthermore, the water flux and specific salt flux (6.14 LMH, 1.26 g/L) of the TA-K draw solution at 100 mM were approximately 2.5 and 0.5 times those of the NaCl draw solution (2.46 LMH, 2.63 g/L) at the same concentration, respectively. For reuse, TA-K was precipitated by using a metal ion and recovered through membrane filtration. This study demonstrates the applicability of a phytochemical material as a draw solute for forward osmosis.

  • Renewable energy resources and technologies have the potential to provide long-lasting solutions of the global energy-requirements faced by the economic and environmental sectors of a nation. Therefore, waste money bills were used as renewable energy source for the production of bio-ethanol. In this study, different concentrated NaOH 0.5%. 1.0%, 2.0%, 3.0% and 0.0% (as a control) were used for 10, 20 and 30 mins at $121^{\circ}C$/15 psi in an autoclave. Saccharification and fermentation (aerobic and anaerobic) were carried out through commercial enzyme Celluclast 1.5 L, Novozymes 188 and Saccharomyces cerevisiae KCCM 11304 respectively. The results of pretreatment showed that the NaOH pre-treated substrate enhanced enzyme action and released more amount of glucose. The amount of glucose was found with the increasing concentration of NaOH and time $44996.95{\pm}6.30$, $46763.10{\pm}3.56$, $53421.32{\pm}4.72$, $63431.25{\pm}6.95$ and $56850.98{\pm}6.75\;ng/{\mu}l$ for 30 min respectively. As for bioethanol, the conversion rate of NaOH resulted $1010.08{\pm}4.71$, $1050.25{\pm}4.37$, $1109.49{\pm}4.39$, $1139.25{\pm}3.26$ and $1020.77{\pm}3.89$ ppm for aerobic; $16730.54{\pm}6.67$, $17076.45{\pm}6.25$, $17516.17{\pm}4.49$, $19782.68{\pm}6.19$ and $17973.39{\pm}7.50$ ppm for anaerobic and $18935.02{\pm}4.59$, $19895.45{\pm}5.39$, $21912.95{\pm}4.83$, $24895.21{\pm}6.72$ and $18961.21{\pm}4.90$ ppm for anaerobic condition with benzoic acid for respective condition. Thus, the results of the present work clearly revealed that with the increasing of alkali concentration might be more effective for bio-ethanol production from waste money bill, which is economic and environmental friendly.
