  • The bleeding of 39 Acer mono trunks by wounding was investigated at the altitudes of 400m, 500m, 800m, and 1100m on Wangsirobong (1,214m), Mt. Chiri area (127°34'E., 35°14'N.) from February 4 to March 21, 1993 and from February 23 to March 23, 1994. The amount of sap in a day was clodely related to the change of air temperature and wind speed. Especially, the abundant sap was exudated at the ranges of -4~13℃ in the daily range of temperature and it was below 0.14m/s in wind speed. The most abundant bleeding was exudated from Acer mono trunk located south facing slope in 800m altitude. Also the amount of sap increased with incereasing suface area of crown. The maximum bleeding of sap was collected from the hole punctured at 80cm height from the ground surface at southern part of the trunks. And the number of exudation holes had an important effect on bleeding of sap but the number of holes should be controlled by DBH of trunks. These results suggested that the exudation was influenced by the daily range of temperature and wind speed. And the altitude, direction of sloped where the trees occurred, surface area of crown, the number of exudation holes, height form the ground surface and the direction of the hole was 91.6% when germicide (Dimethyl-4,4' -ophenylene bis 3-thio alonate) was treated from April to October after bleeding of sap in the year.

  • To investigate the structure and the conservation strategy of natural forest at Paekryunsa-Hyangcho kpong area in Tokyusan, 21 plots (400$m^2$) set up with random sampling method. Four groups were classified by cluster analysis. High positive correlations was proved between Tripterygium regelii and Acer tschonoskii var. rubripes, Viburnum sargentii and Betula ermanii, Corylus heterophylla var. thunbergii and Stephanandra incisa, Betula costata and Cornus controversa, Acer mono and Tilia amurensis, Tilia amurensis and Kalopanax pictum, Lonicera maackii and Viburum sargentii, and Betula ermanii, Acer tschonoskii var. rubripes and Taxus cuspidata, and Viburnum sargentii, and High negative correlations was proved between Acer pseudo-sieboldianum and Viburnum sargentii, Tripterygium regelii and Stephanandra incisa, Acer tschonoskii var. rubripes, and Stephanandra incisa. Species diversity(H') of investigated area was calculated 0.9402~1.2473. Taxus cuspidata, Betula ermanii and Abies koreana at Hyangchokpong area in Tokyusan should be conserved.

  • To investigate and to compare the structure of Picea jezoensis forests at Chunwangbong area in the Jirisan National Park, 33 plots(400) were set up by a random sampling method. Dead individuals of Picea jezoensis trees were 15.6%, these were observed mainly in the upper-layer trees. A few seedlings of Picea jezoensis were found in this investigation area. This result indicates that Picea jezoensis might be gradually decreased in the future. Picea jezoensis stands were classified into two major groups by cluster analysis. There were strong positive correlations between Syringa reticulata and Acer pseudosieboldianum, Tripterygium regelii, Quercus serrata; Betula ermani and Lonicera maackii; Euonymus macropterus and Acer ukurunduense; Acer pseudosieboldianum and Tripterygium regelii, and relatively weak negative correlations were showed between Picea jezoensis and Abies koreana; Betula ermani and Acer ukurunduense; Acer pseudosieboldianum and Tripterygium regelii. Species diversity index(H') of investigated groups ranged from 1.0000 to 1.3010.

  • This study was conducted to analyze to the applicability of refined saps of Acer mono, A. mono for. rubripes, A. okamotoanum through sap refining system. 1 species of Bacillus genus, 3-4 species of yeast and 2 species of fungi were detected in the origin sap of three Acer spp. The pH in the origin sap were 6.5, and decreased in refining sap as 6.3-6.4. Sucrose in sugar components was detected in the origin and refining sap of Acer spp., but glucose and fructose were not detected. Compared the origin and refining sap, mineral components decreased slightly in refining sap. These results indicate that refining sap of Acer spp. are drinkable with long-term storage.

  • Objectives : This study was conducted to evaluate the Intraocular pressure (IOP) and retina neuroprotective effect of Acer palmatum thumb. extract in glaucoma of DBA2/J mice vivo model. Methods : The amount of change in intraocular pressure(IOP) was measured every two weeks for 30 weeks in the DBA2/J glaucoma animal model. The increased IOP were regrouping into drug treatment groups. EW and EE (1, 2 mg/㎖)extract was eye drop administered twice per day for 8 weeks. After administration of the extract, IOP was measured every 1 week at a fixed time for 8 weeks, and protein expression levels and serological changes related to retinal function were investigated. Results : The DBA2/J mice were IOP increased as time dependent, resulting in damage to the retinal function protein related in glaucoma animal model. However, administration of extracts from Leaves of Acer palmatum thumb. prevented an increase IOP, increased for Brn3α, PKCα, and OPN1SW. Additionally, the experssion of Aterocyte maker, GFAP was decreased in DBA2/J mice. Conclusions : These results demonstrate that both IOP and age can be considered in studies using DBA2/J mice and suggest that the extracts from Leaves of Acer palmatum thumb. regulating of IOP and expression of proteins related to retinal function.

  • The objective of this study was to increase the utilizability of domestic thinning and small diameter wood as applying in pattern design which can be applied in interior decoration, wood craft and wood furniture, and in developing the designs of furniture and household items. Then we investigated the physical and mechanical characteristics of Acer mono wood by pressurization and heat treatment. Color change is clear, and the wood density is increased with increasing pressing rate. The compressive and bending strengths are decreased as heating time is increased after pressing. However, shrinkage is improved after pressing and heating.

  • Acer palmatum was selected and its responses to elevated ozone were subsequently measured during growing periods. Ozone concentration of this study was compared to the calculated AOT40 value. A. palmatum had significantly many but small stomata size to the ozone stress. The length of stomata of A. palmatum was reduced from 5.6 to $5.0{\mu}m$ to the ozone exposure. However, the number of stomata (density) was increased from 102 to 131 in the $500{\times}500{\mu}m$ leaf area.

  • The stem barks, heartwoods, and leaves of Acer tegmentosum (Aceraceae) are widely used in Korea to treat hepatic or cerebral disorders mainly due to alcohol poisoning. This study was aimed to analyze phenolic substances in A. tegmentosum. Quantitative analysis of the three phenolic substances (salidroside, (+)-catechin and scopoletin) was performed by HPLC and the identification of volatile phenolic substances were done by GC-MS. The contents of the three compounds in the three MeOH extracts were higher in the stem bark (salidroside: 80.22 mg/g, (+)-catechin: 23.31 mg/g, and scopoletin: 9.45 mg/g) compared to the heartwoods and leaves. And GC-MS analysis of the stem bark extract demonstrated that p-tyrosol is a main substance of twenty-one compounds identified.

  • Two triterpenoid saponine were isolated from the stems of Acer ginnala Maxim. The structures of triterpenoid saponins were established as ilexoside O, $3-O-{\alpha}-L- rhamnopyranosyl(1{\rightarrow}2)-{\beta}-D-glucopyranosyl(1{\rightarrow}2)-{\beta}-D-xylopyranosyl-pubescenolic$ acid 28-{\beta}-D-glucopyranosyl$ ester(1) and ilexoside K, $3-O-{\beta}-D-glucopyranosyl(1{\rightarrow}2)-{\beta}-D-xylopyranosyl-pubes-cenolic$ acid $28-{\beta}-D-glucopyranosyl$ ester(2). Their chemical structures have been elucidated on the basis of spectral methods.
