  • The accidents which occurred between during february of 1997 to December of 2004 at the 2nd Daegu subway construction site have been classified. The accident types of injuries include accidental falls, falling objects which consist 53.4% of all accidents. This result is higher than the same types of accidents occurring at construction sites which are 46.3%. It was found that the 3.4 times more accidents are caused from safety measures and working methods than problems caused by lack of supervision. 78.0% of the accidents occurred at stations and at the ventilation area. 31.9% of the accidents occurred when the operation was near completion($81.0%{\sim}100.0%$) which means there was pressure to complete the operation to meet the set due date. In the case of 50.0% of the accidents were caused by workers with less than two month work experience. And lumbago is 6.9%, especially lumbago didn't showed before. Maybe accident should increase if not reduce a possibility of danger. In this study a literature search has been conducted for the cause of these accident types and respective suggestions are provided.

  • Notorious press machine bothers employers by causing so many industrial accidents which are mostly of caught-in or between type. In 2008, press machines caused 1665 cases of such type of accidents, which reached about 11% of all those. Even though various approaches has been adopted to prevent those press machine accidents, up to now, no one was found to be satisfactory. In this study, two kinds of companies, accident-occurred and accident-free by press machine, were surveyed to find out positive and negative factors for accidents prevention. 400 companies which experienced accidents in 2008 and 200 companies which did not experience accident at all during the same period were selected for this survey. Most of these companies are small companies that employ less than 50 employees. Even though small companies are exempted from legal obligations to have a safety management system for accident prevention, we surveyed about safety management systems of those companies because of its crucial importance for accident prevention including whether they appointed safety managers and various supervisors. Awareness and efforts for safety of employers and employees were also measured. Results were analysed by the method of cross tabulation analysis. Main findings of this study are as follows. Most accident-occurred companies did not appoint any safety manager or supervisor. While it is recommended that the workplace of high accident rate have a safety manager. In addition, as less employers' effort for safety was made in accident-occurred companies in order to prevent accidents during press processing, the author proposes an amendment to the relevant law. Finally, the most referred reason for the negligence of hazard is the cumbersomeness in installing safeguards.

  • Through this study, we developed a model for predicting chemical accidents lead to casualties. The model was derived from the logistic regression analysis model and applied to the variables affecting the accident. The accident data used in the model was analyzed by studying the statistics of past chemical accidents, and applying independent variables that were statistically significant through data analysis, such as the type of accident, cause, place of occurrence, status of casualties, and type of chemical accident that caused the casualties. A significance of p < 0.05 was applied. The model developed in this study is meaningful for the prevention of casualties caused by chemical accidents and the establishment of safety systems in the workplace. The analysis using the model found that the most influential factor in the occurrence of casualty in accidents was chemical explosions. Therefore, there is an urgent need to prepare countermeasures to prevent chemical accidents, specifically explosions, from occurring in the workplace.

  • Since the opening of Seoul Subway Line #1 in 1974, the number of passengers has been increasing. The possibility for passenger's accidents in railway stations has also increased. In order to decrease these kind of accidents, railway operation systems have been automated. Nevertheless, the possibility of a casualty accident in railway stations remains. This study analyzed the type of casualty accidents, casualty accidents by age, sex, pedestrian facility, and passenger type based on the internal data of Seoul Metro. The causes of casualty accidents are also found out. Finally, the establishment of railway safety education program and railway safety experience center are suggested in order to prevent the urban railway casualty accident in advance at railway stations.

  • Objectives: Despite recent efforts to prevent suffocation disasters, a number of confined space accidents still happen and each year deaths continue to occur. There have been insufficient studies on the dangers of various potential disaster sites, such as manholes, septic tanks, reactors, and other tanks according to type, characteristics, task-specific disasters, equipment specific disasters, etc. The purpose of this study was to analyze recent suffocation disasters based on place and properties. Methods: In this study, we analyzed confined space accident cases from 2005 to 2015 in Korea and grouped them by type, size, monthly occurrence, continuous service period, accident location, person-specific group, age, employment, structural work and subcontracting work. We studied examples of accidents developed in other countries. Results: (1) We reviewed confined-space accident statistics, compared legal standards and analyzed cases of suffocation accidents in the United States and Japan. (2) Using a case study report from the Korea Occupational Safety & Health Agency, we specified confined-space accident statistics based on place, person-specific group, age, employment, structural work and subcontracting work. As a result we generated some precautions about confined-space accidents for the prevention of such accidents. Conclusions: Conclusions: Statistical analysis of recent suffocation disaster cases was performed to establish improvement measures, compare practices from developed countries, and develop precautionary measures accordingly. In this study, we presented the causes of disaster that occur in a confined space and proposed related preventive measures.

  • The accident risk at the construction workplace associated with agricultural engineering is comparatively higher than those of other fields due mainly to its complex work types and processes. Agricultural engineering deals with a variety of agricultural infrastructures from irrigation and drainage facilities to giant-scale coastal reclamation land infrastructures. The characteristics that most agricultural projects have conducted on a small-scale even worsen the situation drawing low attentions to risk management. Therefore, systematical risk assessment that focuses on details of agricultural construction work process is required in order to enhance safety management capacity and to prevent repetitive accidents ultimately. This study aims to categorize construction work types and processes of agricultural construction works, and to quantitatively assess the accident risk of them based on accident analysis. Regarding classification of construction works, actual 827 accident cases were thoroughly reviewed and coded by their construction site, facility and work type, project scale and so on. Most accidents (71.8 % of total cases) occurred in small-scale construction workplaces with less than 5 billion Korean won project budget. And those accidents related to agricultural infrastructure project (37.4%) and agricultural water development project (22.4%). In terms of work types, accidents frequently took place in form-work followed by pipe installation work, steel bar work and concrete work. The potential risks were compared with actual outbreak of accidents based on Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). The results show that the potential conditions of accident expected to be took place is somewhat different from the actual conditions where accidents actually happened. This implicates that risk management manuals or education needs to be adjusted by reflecting unexpected circumstances. Overall, this study is meaningful in that the results could be foundations as to strengthen risk management capacity for agricultural engineering projects.

  • In the framework of the Generation IV research and development project, in which the French Commission of Alternative and Atomic Energies (CEA) is involved, a main objective for the design of Sodium-cooled Fast Reactor (SFR) is to meet the safety goals for severe accidents. Among the severe ones, the Unprotected Transient OverPower (UTOP) accidents can lead very quickly to a global melting of the core. UTOP accidents can be considered either as slow during a Control Rod Withdrawal (CRW) or as fast. The paper focuses on fast UTOP accidents, which occur in a few milliseconds, and three different scenarios are considered: rupture of the core support plate, uncontrolled passage of a gas bubble inside the core and core mechanical distortion such as a core flowering/compaction during an earthquake. Several levels and rates of reactivity insertions are also considered and the thermal-mechanical behavior of an ASTRID fuel pin from the ASTRID CFV core is simulated with the GERMINAL code. Two types of fuel pins are simulated, inner and outer core pins, and three different burn-up are considered. Moreover, the feedback from the CABRI programs on these type of transients is used in order to evaluate the failure mechanism in terms of kinetics of energy injection and fuel melting. The CABRI experiments complete the analysis made with GERMINAL calculations and have shown that three dominant mechanisms can be considered as responsible for pin failure or onset of pin degradation during ULOF/UTOP accident: molten cavity pressure loading, fuel-cladding mechanical interaction (FCMI) and fuel break-up. The study is one of the first step in fast UTOP accidents modelling with GERMINAL and it has shown that the code can already succeed in modelling these type of scenarios up to the sodium boiling point. The modeling of the radial propagation of the melting front, validated by comparison with CABRI tests, is already very efficient.

  • This study deals with the accident models of arterial link sections by driving type. The objectives is to develop models by driving type using the accident data of 24 arterial links in Cheong-ju. In pursuing the above, this study gives particular emphasis to modeling such the accidents as the straight, lane change and others. The main results analyzed are as follows. First, the number of accidents is analyzed to account for about 59% in straight, 31% in lane change and 10% in others. Second, the number of left-turn lane as common variables, and the ADT, number of pedestrian crossings, connecting roads and link length as specific variables are selected in developing models(number of accident and EPDO). Third, 8 models which are all statistically significant are developed. Finally, RMSE of the driving type models was analyzed to be better than that of dummy variable.

  • The demand for two-wheelers has increased in recent years, driven by the growing delivery culture, which has also led to a rise in the number of two-wheelers. Although two-wheelers are economically efficient in congested traffic conditions, reckless driving and ambiguous traffic laws for two-wheelers have turned two-wheeler accidents into a significant social issue. Given the high fatality rate associated with two-wheelers, the severity and risk of two-wheeler accidents are considerable. It is, therefore, crucial to thoroughly understand the characteristics of two-wheeler accidents by analyzing their attributes. In this study, the characteristics of two-wheeled vehicle accidents were categorized using the K-prototypes algorithm, based on data from two-wheeled vehicle accidents. As a result, the accidents were divided into four clusters according to their characteristics. Each cluster showed distinct traits in terms of the roads where accidents occurred, the major laws violated, the types of accidents, and the times of accident occurrences. By tailoring enforcement methods and regulations to the specific characteristics of each type of accident, we can reduce the incidence of accidents involving two-wheelers in metropolitan areas, thereby enhancing road safety. Furthermore, by applying machine learning techniques to urban transportation and safety, this study adds to the body of related literature.

  • Rotary that causes traffic delays and safety issues by high-speed entry vehicles is currently being improved to roundabout. The operational difference between rotary and roundabout can cause driver's confusion and traffic accident. The purpose of this study is to develop the accident rate models which explain the factors related to the accidents by land use and intersection type. The main results are as follows. First, the null hypotheses that the type of land use and two intersections do not affect the accident rate are rejected. Second, the conflicting factors such as the number of crosswalk and bicycle lane should be carefully considered to reduce traffic accident at rotary. In the case of roundabout, greater than 3.5 m in circulatory lane width and two circulatory lane are analyzed to be important to prevent the accidents. Finally, the commercial and mixed areas are evaluated to be weak to traffic accidents than residential area.
