A 9300 TEU container carrier was equipped in 2006 with instrumentation aimed at wave induced accelerations, and motions. In 2010 the system was extended with strain sensors to include structural loads. Section loads for vertical bending could be readily obtained but the originally intended derivation of horizontal bending and torsion from the measured strains was found to be unreliable. This paper addresses an alternative approach that was adopted in the post processing of results. In particular the concept to use acceleration sensors to capture global hull deformations along the length of the hull, and the use of a data fusion procedure to obtain section loads from combined sensor data and finite element calculations. The approach is illustrated by comparison of actually measured accelerations and local strains with values obtained from the data fusion model. It is concluded that the approach is promising but in need of further validation and development. In particular the number and shapes of the modes used may not have been sufficient to represent the true deflection and thus strain distributions along the high loaded areas.
In order to develop navigation systems, simulators that provide navigation sensors data are required. A trajectory generator that simulates vehicle motion is needed to generate navigation sensors data in the simulator. In this paper, a trajectory generator for evaluating navigation system performance is proposed. The proposed trajectory generator consists of two parts. The first part obtains parameters from the motion scenario file whereas the second part generates position, velocity, and attitude from the parameters. In the proposed trajectory generator six degrees of freedom, halt, climb, turn, accel turn, spiral, combined, and waypoint motions are given as basic motions with parameters. These motions can be combined to generate complex trajectories of the vehicle. Maximum acceleration and jerk for linear motion and maximum angular acceleration and velocity for rotational motion are considered to generate trajectories. In order to show the usefulness of the proposed trajectory generator, trajectories were generated from motion scenario files and the results were observed. The results show that the proposed trajectory generator can accurately simulate complex vehicle motions that can be used to evaluate navigation system performance.

The generalization trend of smart phones have brought many smartphone games into daily lives. These games are mainly dependent on the interactions on the display of the phone using finger touches. On the other hand, functions for detecting the positions and actions of the phones such as gyro-sensors have been rapidly developed over the former orientation sensors and acceleration sensors. Though it has become technologically possible to detect the users' motion via the smartphone devices and to use the phone device directly as the game device, it is hard to find the actualized cases. This paper proposes a new paradigm including basic frameworks and algorithm for the games combining the motion recognitions and mutual communications on the smartphones and finally presents the details of its implementation and results.
In this paper, a device to analyze gait pattern was developed by using a 2-axis acceleration sensor attached to the foot. The 1st low-pass filter was adapted to limit the frequency band up to 5 Hz. An algorithm to detect the peak value exceeding the threshold voltage of an X-axis acceleration sensor and a Z-axis acceleration sensor was developed and normal and abnormal walking patterns were thus differentiated. Also, MCU and Bluetooth were combined to transfer the data to other MCUs to display on an LCD; the size of the device could then be reduced. The new algorithm and the device allowed the individual walking patterns to be easily measured at a low cost and with less restriction on activities compared to conventional multiple pressure sensors or motion camera system.
This paper presents the results of an experimental investigation on a vibration-based damage identification framework for a steel girder type and a truss bridge based on acceleration responses to operational loading. The method relies on sensor clustering-based time-series analysis of the operational acceleration response of the bridge to the passage of a moving vehicle. The results are presented in terms of Damage Features from each sensor, which are obtained by comparing the actual acceleration response from the sensors to the predicted response from the time-series model. The damage in the bridge is detected by observing the change in damage features of the bridge as structural changes occur in the bridge. The relative severity of the damage can also be quantitatively assessed by observing the magnitude of the changes in the damage features. The experimental results show the potential usefulness of the proposed method for future applications on condition assessment of real-life bridge infrastructures.
While the feasibility of vertical velocity as a threshold parameter for pre-impact fall detection has been verified, effects of sensor attachment locations and methods calculating vertical acceleration and velocity on the detection performance have not been studied yet. Regarding the vertical velocity-based pre-impact fall detection, this paper investigates detection accuracies of eight different cases depending on sensor locations (waist vs. sternum), vertical accelerations (accurate acceleration based on both accelerometer and gyroscope vs. approximated acceleration based on only accelerometer), and vertical velocities (velocity with attenuation vs. velocity difference). Test results show that the selection of waist-attached sensor, accurate acceleration, and velocity with attenuation based on accelerometer and gyroscope signals is the best in overall in terms of sensitivity and specificity of the detection as well as lead time.

Quickness and precision are the two most important requirements for an industrial scale used in production lines. In this paper, a new approach, "Dynamic-Mass measurement control System of Acceleration and Displacement(DMS-AD) sensing", is presented to improve some of drowbacks in conventional scales. The system, consisted of acceleration and displace- ment sensors, spring scale and microcomputer, is based on full utilization of dynamic mass measurement of acceleration and displacement via microcomputer-assisted real time monitoring. The rsulting system, when combined with appropriate dynamic mass estimation algorithm software, has shown its effectiveness in terms of two desirable characteristics required. required.

Early detection of an internal malfunction of machinery plays a very important part in all condition monitoring programs. Sensors to detect amplitude. velocity and acceleration are widely used in vibration detection and control. Piezoceramic materials are largely used in sensors and actuators for vibration monitoring and control due to their relatively large output from an induced strain and their arguable self powering characteristics. In this paper a cheap and yet reliable sensors/actuators were developed to detect vibration. The results show that low cost PZT can be designed for optimum detection of bearing vibration. This paper presents the experimental results of a number of piezoceramics characteristics in terms of resonant frequencies and variation of PZT constants with temperature.

Chopper and sensors failures resulting from electric shock and mechanical vibration generated by rail irregularities are the serious problem deteriorating the performance in the electromagnetic suspension systems. Thus, this paper proposes a fault-tolerant control scheme with a dynamic compensator for the failure of the choppers, gap sensors and acceleration sensors in electromagnetic suspension system. The advantage of the proposed control method are demonstrated through simulation and experimental results for the levitation characteristics when the failures of the chopper and sensors occur, respectively.

The acceleration sensor and the gyroscopic sensor are used as representative sensors to detect repetitive motion and have been used to analyze various sporting components. However, both sensors have problems with noise sensitivity and accumulation of errors. There have been attempts to use two sensors together to overcome hardware problems. The complementary filter has shown successful results in mitigating the problems of both sensors by minimizing the disadvantages of accelerometer and gyroscope sensors and maximizing their advantages. In this paper, we proposed a modified method using neural network to reduce variable. The neural network is an algorithm that can precisely measure even in unexpected environments or situations by pre-learning the number of various cases. The proposed method applies a Neural Network by dividing the repetitive motion into three sections, the first, the middle and the end. As a result, the recognition rate is 96.35%, 98.77%, 96.92% and the accuracy is 97.18%.
