The Application to Sand Spreading Method for Accelerating Sedimentation and Self-Weight Consolidation of Dredged Soils (준설토의 침강.자중압밀촉진을 위한 모래살포공법의 적용성에 관한 연구)

  • The clay which transported into a pond under the high water content condition have no effective stress which develop from the starting point of sedimentation and self-weight consolidation. Since sedimentation and self-weight consolidation dependent on self-weight of solids is made progress over a long time, to accelerating it have many advantages in the economic view In this paper, sand spreading method which is one of sedimentation and self-weight consolidation acceleration method is studied through a series of experiments considering the mixing ratio of sand and clay. The test results show that the mixing ratio of clay and sand of 1:0.2 is the biggest rate of consolidation and the pouring at the end point of sedimentation considerably effects on consolidation rate.

A Study on Caissons for Accelerating Consolidation Considering Anisotropic Permeability (비등방 투수성을 고려한 압밀촉진 케이슨 기초공법에 관한 연구)

  • This study has investigated the feasibility of caissons for accelerating consolidation (C.A.C.) constructed in clays with anisotropic permeability by improving the former study on C.A.C. in isotropic clays. Analytical solutions for excessive pore water pressures of two-dimensional consolidation equation and average degrees of consolidation with varying time factors have been provided by considering anisotropic permeability. With varying anisotropic permeability ratios of 5, 10, and 50, consolidation times required for reaching the average degree of consolidation of 90% for C.A.C. at the section of $\xi$=0.1 are shorter than those for conventional caissons by 8, 13, and 47 times, respectively. C.A.C. is more effective in reducing consolidation time as anisotropic permeability ratio increases. This study provides also plots for average degrees of consolidation versus the width to depth ratios of analyzed sections and permeability ratios, which will enable engineers to determine easily average consolidation settlements.

  • Sand pile method, such as sand drain method and sand compaction pile method, has been popularly used as an improvement method for soft clay grounds. The effect of accelerating consolidation of soft clay grounds has been evaluated with Barron's solution. By the way, the consolidation behavior of soft clay ground with sand piles strongly depends on both the nonlinear mechanical interaction between sand piles and surrounding clays and the degradation permeability of clays. In this paper, the method for determining consolidation parameters of soft clay ground with sand drains by using Barron's solution was proposed, through a series of numerical simulations. Through the method, the change in both volume compressibility and permeability during consolidation was reasonably evaluated.

  • In this study, the in-situ model test has been conducted and used to estimate and analyze consolidation behavior of the ground by using the miniature test that reconstructs economically geotechnical behavior of in-situ full scale structure. To analogize the relation among effective stress, void ratio and coefficient of permeability at the self-weight consolidation stage, the low stress seepage consolidation test has been conducted and the involution function of constitutive equation had been obtained from the result of the curve fitted seepage consolidation test result. As a result of the numerical analysis that had been conducted on the representative section using a constitute equation, final settlement was similar with those of self-weight consolidation of the centrifugal model test. But, it was more or less smaller. It seems that these trends are caused by the difference between estimated values.

  • Dredged fills have been widely used to secure a land for the engineering activities. Before the useful application of the area, the soils should be consolidated to acquire the aquate shear strength. Several research projects have attempted to develop a method fur accelerating the consolidation of soft clay. Our study examined the effect of ultrasonic energy on the consolidation of soft clay, Tests were conducted using specially designed and fabricated equipment that was capable of directly applying ultrasonic energy to soil samples during consolidation tests. The specimens were prepared from slurry using a centrifuge facility, and tests were conducted at various levels of ultrasonic power and treatment time. The study showed that ultrasonic energy had a considerable effect on consolidation time, suggesting that ultrasound can be used to reduce the consolidation time of soft clay.

  • To solve the problem of saturated dredged soil dumping area, it is possible to extend the life span of dredged soil dumping area by accelerating consolidation of dredged soil and making alluvial soil layer consolidated additionally by using dewatering method and PDF method without construction of new dumping area which entails great expense. Self-weight consolidation tests on samples from Busan and Incheon with the column of 400 mm in diameter were conducted to estimate those methods applicability to domestic dredged soil. As a result of tests, it was proved that dewatering method and PDF method were highly effective in increasing reclamation capacity of dredged soil by reduction of self-weight consolidation completion time and increase of self-weight consolidation settlement.

  • 연약한 점토 지반에 안벽을 축조하고 매립하는 경우, 안벽의 기초로서 케이슨 기초공법이 종종 쓰이고 있다. 케이슨 기초는 안벽의 연직 하중을 지지층에 전달할 뿐만 아니라, 매립하중에 의한 연약 점토의 횡방향 소성 유동에 대하여는 매우 효과적인 공법으로 호안공사에서 그 사용 빈도가 증가하고 있는 추세이다. 반면 매립하중에 의해 점토지반에서 장기간에 걸쳐 발생하는 압밀침하에 대해서는 아무런 역할을 하지 못하는 단점이 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 기존 케이슨 기초의 배면에 다수의 강관 배수공을 설치함으로써 과잉간극수압의 횡방향 소산을 촉진시켜 압밀 시간을 단축시키는 \"매립측 연약점토 압밀촉진 케이슨 기초공법\"을 제안하였다. 이 새로운 케이슨 공법의 압밀촉진 효과를 분석하기 위하여 2차원 압밀방정식의 해석해를 유도하였다. 연구결과, 등방성 점토에서 압밀촉진 케이슨 사용시 ξ=0.1인 단면에서 평균압밀도 50%, 90%에 이르는 시간이 기존 케이슨을 사용한 것에 비해 각각 약 7배, 3.5배 단축되는 것으로 나타났다. 것으로 나타났다.

Composite Ground Effects on Small Area Replacement Ratio of Sand Piles (면적치환비가 작은 샌드파일 설치지반에서의 복합지반효과)

  • Sand pile is widely used as a ground improvement method. Although the primary purpose of constructing sand pile is accelerating consolidation, composite ground effect also can be gained by constructing sand pile. This study was accomplished to understand composite ground effect on the ground improved by sand piles which were applied as vertical drainage material when area replacement ratio was small relatively. For determining bearing capacities of origin ground and sand piles and analysing interaction between embankment and origin ground, bearing tests and earth pressure monitoring are performed. From the results, it turned out that the contribution of sand pile as a load bearing mechanism is not substantial. However, the bearing capacity of sand pile was increased to sixty percentages when compared with origin ground. The increasement of bearing capacity could be caused the change of consolidation characteristics during the process of consolidation by overburden load. Therefore, the composite ground effects depending on stiffness increasement of sand pile would be estimated as a factor decreasing consolidation settlement.

  • Many economical and efficient methods such as sand drain method(SD), plastic board drain(PBD), sand compaction pile, vacuum consolidation method, etc., have been used for soft grounds. The case of sand compaction pile has an effect on accelerating consolidation and increasing bearing capacity by penetration at regular intervals under soft grounds for reducing the drainage path. But, this method has caused not only the nature damage by extracting the sands indiscreetly but also the economical problem for importing the sands because it needs so much sand to make the sand compaction pile. Thus, this study choosed the bottom ash which has similar engineering characteristics with sand. It was performed that clogging test and large direct shear test changing the bottom ash replacement ratio in soft ground for studying strength characteristics of soft ground using bottom ash compaction pile. As a result of the test, the internal friction angle was largely increased and the cohesion was decreased as the replacement ratio increased.
