To estimate durability of reinforced concrete structures located in or nearby seawater, many different kinds of accelerated tests for evaluation of chloride ion permeation in concrete were proposed. At present the only standardized test is the ASTM C 1202(RCP test). This test method is used to estimate the concrete's resistivity of the chloride penetration in concrete by using the total charges passed and sometimes used to calculate the chloride diffusion coefficients. However, this test may lead to an erroneous chloride diffusion coefficient. So this test method was compared with the modified Dhir's test and the traditional concentration diffusion test. Experimental results showed that the diffusion coefficients determined the RCP test and the PD Index gave wrongous values, but the diffusion coefficient acquired by considering a migration term was nearly the same to the CD Test.

An electrci method for the rapid determination of chloride diffusion coefficient in concrete is proposed considering the electrical migration term in the Nernst-Plank equation. The experimental set-up for this method is basically that for PD index by Dhir, excluding some change in the experimental parameter values in consideration of reliability, simplicity and rapidity of the accelerated test method. Experimental results show that 30mm of specimen thickness, 10 volt of supplied potential, and 5M of chloride ion concentration are optimal

Recently, as many big marine concrete structures increase, it is necessary that chloride ion diffusion coefficient of concrete shall be evaluated but it will take a long time to evaluate chloride ion diffusion coefficient of concrete. Accordingly, many test methods are suggested to evaluate chloride ion diffusion coefficient in a short period time by the promotion in electro chemical ways but the systematic study for this is insufficient. Therefore, this study evaluates chloride ion penetration and diffusion features by three representative electric promotion tests targeting for three different cements whose ingredients are different and analyzes the correlationship between them. As a result, diffusion features of chloride ion varied according to the cement ingredients and three ingredients cement in which blast furnace slag powder and fly ash are mixed in constant ratio, which shows the most excellent cement diffusion properties. For diffusion properties of chloride ion, the correlationship between test methods are good.

Concrete structure for nuclear power plant is mass concrete structure with large wall depth and easily permits cracking in early age due to hydration heat and drying shrinkage. It always needs cooling water so that usually located near to sea shore. The crack on concrete surface permits rapid chloride intrusion and also causes more rapid corrosion in the steel. In the study, the effect of age and crack width on chloride diffusion is evaluated for the concrete for nuclear power plant with 6000 psi strength. For the work, various crack widths with 0.0~1.4 mm are induced and accelerated diffusion test is performed for concrete with 56 days, 180days, and 365 days. With increasing crack width over 1.0mm, diffusion coefficient is enlarged to 2.7~3.1 times and significant reduction of diffusion is evaluated due to age effect. Furthermore, apparent diffusion coefficient and surface chloride content are evaluated for the concrete with various crack width exposed to atmospheric zone with salt spraying at the age of 180 days. The results are also analyzed with those from accelerated diffusion test.

Part I of this study was devoted to the electrical accelerated chloride diffusion in mortars. In this second part, natural chloride diffusion has been investigated for four types of mortars under exposure to a 0.5 mol/L NaCl solution for a period of up to 35 days. Two different types of sand were used for the production of test samples: siliceous sand (used as a reference) and limestone sand (used in this study). The effect of water to cement ratio and exposure time on the diffusion coefficients of mortars was also investigated. In this study, the total and free chloride content and penetration depth of mortar were measured after immersion, and Fick's second law of diffusion was fitted to the experimental data to determine the diffusion coefficient. Their results show that the use of crushed limestone sand in mortar had a positive effect on the chloride resistance. The apparent diffusion coefficient in all specimens was smaller than that in siliceous sand mortar. However, the chloride penetration of these mortars was increased as exposure time progressed.

Generally, durability of concrete structures under marine environment is grossly declined by detrimental ions such as chlorides, which penetrate concrete and was diffused to corrode reinforcing rod. Therefore, chloride diffusion properties in concrete are important for durability evaluation and design of concrete structure. For estimation of chloride diffusion coefficient in concrete, both evaluation methods are used for steady state and non-steady state derived from Fick's 1st and 2nd law, respectively. However, as it is very difficult to evaluate diffusion coefficient for non-steady state like service environment where concrete is actually exposed, indirect evaluation method by laboratory accelerated test is generally used. In this study, comparison of chloride diffusion behavior was investigated for fixed mix proportion and age of concrete using four accelerated test methods based on domestic and foreign standards. From test results, only relative comparison between concrete mixtures was possible using ASTM C 1202 test, and diffusion coefficient for steady state was estimated as low as 1/10 of that for non-steady state. In addition, diffusion coefficient estimated by immersion test was similar to result by NT build 492 test.

This study were evaluated the corrosion threshold reached at steel reinforcement in latex modified concrete(LMC). Accelerated testing was accomplished to the evalate the diffusion coefficient of LMC mix, and the time dependent constants of diffusion. Also, average chloride diffusion coefficient was estimated. From the average chloride ion diffusion coefficient, the time which critical chloride contents at depth of reinforcement steel was estimated. Test results indicated that the corrosion threshold reached at reinforcement in LMC are effected on the mix proportion factor including latex content, and water-cement ratio.
Supernova remnants (SNRs) are one of the most energetic astrophysical events and are thought to be the dominant source of Galactic cosmic rays (CRs). A recent report on observations of gamma rays from the vicinity of SNRs have shown strong evidence that Galactic CR protons are accelerated by the shock waves of the SNRs. The actual gamma-ray emission from pion decay should depend on the diffusion of CRs in the interstellar medium. In order to quantitatively analyze the diffusion of high-energy CRs from acceleration sites, we have performed test particle numerical simulations of CR protons using a three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) simulation of an interstellar medium swept-up by a blast wave. We analyse the CRs diffusion at a length scale of order a few pc, and show the Richtmeyer-Meshkov instability can provide enough turbulence downstream of the shock to make the diffusion coefficient close to the Bohm level for energy larger than 30 TeV for a realistic interstellar medium.

In case of the cracks in concrete, the penetration of deterioration ions such as chloride ions in to cracks is accelerated. According to the penetration of chloride ions, structural and durability problems to RC(Reinforced Concrete) structures are caused. In this study, the accelerated chloride diffusion coefficient which is in steady state is evaluated for 2 year aged normal and high strength FA(Fly Ash) concrete, after a range of crack depths are induced up to 1.0 mm in 56 aged day. Considering crack effect by linear regression analysis, high strength concrete has slightly less increasing ratio of diffusion coefficient by crack than normal strength concrete, and diffusion coefficient increases non-linearly as crack width is increased. Also, In two types of concrete, crack effect decrease as the curing period increase. In the case of quantifying crack and curing effect by using exponential function form, the coefficients of determination are higher than those of linear regression analysis. Under steady state, it is thought that there is not a high correlation between the crack effect and the curing effect, and considering the two independent effects, it is believed that reasonable prediction equation for diffusion of concrete with crack can be proposed.

Cement hydrates and the related characteristics change with ages, and the behaviors are much related with chloride diffusion. In this work, 30% replacement ratio with FA(Fly Ash) and GGBFS(Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag) are considered for concrete with three levels of W/B (Water to Binder ratio) and 2 years of curing period. Chloride diffusion coefficients from accelerated condition are obtained at 5 measurement period (28days, 56days, 180days, 365days, and 730days), and the results are compared with porosity, binding capacity, and permeability from program-DUCOM. The similar changing pattern between chloride diffusion and permeability is observed since permeability is proportional to the square of porosity. Curing period is grouped into 4 periods and the changing ratios are investigated. Cement hydrate characteristics such as porosity, permeability, and diffusion coefficient are dominantly changed at the early ages (28~56 days), and diffusion coefficient in OPC concrete with low W/B continuously changes to 180days.
