  • The levels of $\gamma$-aminobutyric acid (GAGA) have been analyzed from pharbitis seeds by an AccQ-Tag amino acid analysis procedure. The GABA level of the pharbitis seeds was 125 nmole per gram fresh weight. To investigate the effects of pharbitis seed diets on serum and hepatic lipid levels, as well as enzyme activities of rats administered with ethanol chronically, Sprague-Dawley male rats were fed with either a AIN-76 diet (control), a control diet plus ethanol, a control plus pharbitis seed diet, or a control plus pharbitis seed diet plus ethanol for 30 days. Pharbitis seed diets decreased the serum total cholesterol, triglyceride, LDL-cholesterol, and $\gamma$-GTP levels that were increased by the chronic ethanol administration. In addition, pharbitis seed diets decreased the liver triglyceride and total lipid levels that were increased by the ethanol administration. However, ethanol metabolism was not retarded by the pharbitis seed supplemented diets. The present Endings, plus previous data showing the differences in the effects of cabbage diets having a high or a low level of GABA on the lipid levels and the enzyme activities of rats (Cha and Oh [2000] J. Korean Soc. Food Sci. Nutr. 29, 500-505), raise the possibility that GABA in plants could have a nutraceutical role in the recovery of chronic alcohol-related diseases.

  • High resolution x-ray diffraction and two dimensional triple axis mapping were used to characterize a group of GaN layers of about 1.1$\mu$m grown by direct current plasma molecular beam epitaxy technique on 6H-SiC(0001). A FWHM of 11.9 arcmins for an $\omega$ scan and 1.2 arcmins for an $\omega$/2$\theta$ scan were observed. A careful study of the rocking curves showed there were some large mosaics in the GaN layer and a tilt of $0.029^{\circ}$ between the GaN layer and the SIC substrate was detected. The two dimensional triple axis mapping showed that the GaN mosaica were disoriented in the (0001) plane but rather uniformed in direction perpendicular to the plane. A mosaics were disoriented in the (0001) plane but rather uniformed in direction perpendicular to the plane. A mosaic model was deduced to explain the phenomenon and the dislocation density was estimated to be about~$10^9\;\textrm{cm}^{-2}$ acc ding to the model.

  • N4 phage, which infects E. coli K-12 strains, could not infect E. coli K-12 strains containing rtn(resistant to N4) gene on plasmids, which was isolated from Proteus vulgaris ATCC 13315. The region of rtn gene for Rtn phenotype was reduced to the 1.7 kb HincII-AccI fragment, and rtn gene seemed to have its own promoter. This putative promoter was present in 107 bp HindII-DraI fragment, and known to be functional in E. cole K-12, which is supported by the fact that phenotype of a subclone, pRMG103A1B which does not contain the 107 bp fragment, was dependent on the existance of a functional promoter in the upstream of rtn gene, and that the 107 bp fragment had promoter activity when located in the upstream of structural gene of galactodinase of E. coli. The promoter-bearing fragment contains two overlapping putative promoter sequences, both of which show a fit in eight of twelve nucleotides with consensus sequences of E. coli promoters at the -35 and -10 regions.

  • The final step of driving a car is parking, which is the most difficult part for people learning to drive. Parking in narrow parking spaces is difficult for both ordinary drivers and beginners. To solve this problem, the development of SPAS (Smart Parking Assist System), ACC (Automatic Control System) improves the convenience of drivers. In addition, parking assistance systems have been developed to recognize more accurately the surrounding environment to the driver using the ultrasound, camera, thermal camera, and radar. This paper proposes the reverse turning radius to process images as if the camera is located in the center of the vehicle regardless of the actual camera position. In addition, it generates the parking guidelines through verification using the vehicle.

  • Ethylene is a key gaseous hormone that controls various physiological processes in plants including growth, senescence, fruit ripening, and responses to abiotic and biotic stresses. In spite of some of these positive effects, the gas usually inhibits plant growth. While chemical fertilizers help plants grow better by providing soil-limited nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphate, overusage often results in growth inhibition by soil contamination and subsequent stress responses in plants. Therefore, controlling ethylene production in plants becomes one of the attractive challenges to increase crop yields. Some soil bacteria among plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPRs) can stimulate plant growth even under stressful conditions by reducing ethylene levels in plants, hence the term "stress controllers" for these bacteria. Thus, manipulation of relevant genes or gene products might not only help clear polluted soil of contaminants but contribute to elevating the crop productivity. In this article, the beneficial soil bacteria and the mechanisms of reduced ethylene production in plants by stress controllers are discussed.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the potential effects of Gardenia jasminoides (GJ) extracts, on hepatic steatosis and lipid metabolism in mice fed with high-fat diet (HFD). GJ extracts (100 mg/kg, ${\times}10$ weeks) fed mice showed reduced body weight, adipose tissue weight, reduced aminotransferase level in plasma and hepatic lipid (triglyceride, total cholesterol) content. These effects were accompanied by decreased expression of lipogenic genes, sterol regulatory element binding protein-1c (SREBP-1c), liver X receptor (LXR), fatty acid synthase (FAS), acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC), cluster of differentiation 36 (CD36), lipoprotein lipase (LPL) and decreased lipogenic enzyme FAS and HMG-CoAR enzyme activities while elevating carnitine palmitoyltrasferase-1 (CPT) activity. Based on these results, we speculated that the inhibitory effect on hepatic steatosis of GJ extract containing geniposide is the result of suppression of lipid synthesis in mice fed with HFD, suggesting that GJ extract may be beneficial in preventing hepatic steatosis.

  • This study proposes the feasibility for automatic classification of sleep/wakefulness using nasal pressure in patients with sleep-disordered breathing (SDB). First, SDB events were detected using the methods developed in our previous studies. In epochs for normal breathing, we extracted the features for classifying sleep/wakefulness based on time-domain, frequency-domain and non-linear analysis. And then, we conducted the independent two-sample t-test and calculated Mahalanobis distance (MD) between the two categories. As a results, $SD_{LEN}$ (MD = 0.84, p < 0.01), $P_{HF}$ (MD = 0.81, p < 0.01), $SD_{AMP}$ (MD = 0.76, p = 0.031) and $MEAN_{AMP}$ (MD = 0.75, p = 0.027) were selected as optimal feature. We classified sleep/wakefulness based on support vector machine (SVM). The classification results showed mean of sensitivity (Sen.), specificity (Spc.) and accuracy (Acc.) of 60.5%, 89.0% and 84.8% respectively. This method showed the possibilities to automatically classify sleep/wakefulness only using nasal pressure.

  • Objectives: Here we investigated the anti-lipogenic potential of kaurenoic acid (KA), a diterpene derived from Aralia continentalis, in a cellular model of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Methods: HepG2 cells were treated with palmitate for 24h to induce intracellular lipid accumulation. To assess the influence of KA on steatotic HepG2 cells, various concentration of KA was co-administered. After palmitate treatment, Intracellular triglyceride content was measured. Expression level of several lipogenic genes, sterol regulatory element-binding transcription factor-1c (SREBP-1c), acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC), fatty acid synthase (FAS), and stearoyl-CoA desaturase-1 (SCD-1) were measured using Western-blot analyses or RT-PCR. Results: Palmitate markedly increased intracellular triglyceride level and expression of related lipogenic genes in HepG2 cells, and which was relieved by co-administered KA. Conclusions: It is conceivable that that KA may have a pharmacological potential to reduce lipid accumulation in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
