Outbreak of Cucumber mosaic virus and Tomato spotted wilt virus on Bell Pepper Grown in Jeonnam Province in Korea

  • In August 2006, a severe disease incidence showing mosaic and/or necrotic symptoms on two bell pepper varieties including red-colored 'Special' and yellow-colored 'Fiesta' was observed in a greenhouse located in Gwangyang, Jeonnam province, Korea. To identify causal viruses, total RNAs were extracted from 11 fruit samples with and without symptoms. Specific oligonucleotide primers for Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV), Pepper mottle virus (PepMoV), Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) and Pepper mild mottle virus (PMMoV) were designed based on the sequences available on GenBank. Database comparisons of the deduced amino acid sequences of each sequence produced 100% and 98% matches with nucleocapsid protein gene of TSWV (Acc. No. ABE11605) and coat protein gene of CMV (Acc. No. DQ018289), respectively, suggesting that the symptoms on bell pepper fruits might be caused by the infection of CMV and TSWV. To our knowledge this is the first report of necrotic as well as mosaic virus disease on bell pepper fruits by the infection of CMV and TSWV in Jeonnam province, Korea.

  • The nominative and accusative postpositions in Korean may intervene between the negative auxiliary verb ANH and its complement verb phrase. As Korean is an OV language, this means that 'verb + {nom, acc} + ANH' as well as the simpler concatenation 'verb + ANH' is possible. This fact, together with an overwhelming regularity of these postpositions' optionality in virtually all constructions, poses a problem for formal approaches to the syntax of the language. Working in a constraint-based grammatical framework shaped by such works as Sag and Wasow (1999) and Copestake (2002), we put forth type hierarchies for major_class, which represents verb inflection, and for pos, which has two immediate subtypes, i.e., htrp_pos and ord_pos. What we call the 'half transparency' of the case postpositions separates them from all the other lexical items in the language. The type htrp_pos is used to constrain one of the two newly proposed head_comp_rules, where a newly proposed feature HEAD2 of a phrase inherits its value from the HEAD feature of the head word. The COMPS list of the negative auxiliary ANH is seen as containing a single phrase whose HEAD is a kind of nominal clause and whose HEAD2 is something that is one of the three maximal types: acc, nom, and null.

Recognition of Falls and Activities of Daily Living using Tri-axial Accelerometer and Bi-axial Gyroscope

  • This paper proposes a threshold-based fall recognition algorithm to discriminate between falls and activities of daily living (ADL) using a tri-axial accelerometer and a bi-axial gyroscope sensor mounted on the upper sternum. The experiment was executed ten times according to the proposed experimental protocol. The output signals of the tri-axial accelerometer and the bi-axial gyroscope were measured during eight falls and eleven ADL action sequences. The threshold values of the signal vector magnitude (SVM_Acc), angular velocity (${\omega}_{res}$), and angular variation (${\theta}_{res}$) parameter were calculated using MATLAB. From the preliminary study, three thresholds (TH1, TH2, and TH3) were set so that the falls could be distinguished from ADL. When the parameter SVM_Acc is greater than 2.5 g (TH1), ${\omega}_{res}$ is greater than 1.75 rad/s (TH2), and ${\theta}_{res}$ is greater than 0.385 rad (TH3), these action sequences are recognized as falls. If at least one or more of these conditions is not satisfied, the sequence is classified as ADL.

Altered patterns of brain activity during transient anger among young males with alcohol use disorders: A preliminary study

  • The aim of the study was to investigate the neural substrates associated with processing anger among young males with alcohol use disorders (AUDs) using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Eighteen individuals with AUD and 15 demographically similar non-abusers participated in the study. Participants were scanned on their brain functioning while they viewed an audio-visual film clip that was previously designed specifically to induce anger emotion, followed by anpsychological assessment. Greater brain activities were detected in the left inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) and dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) among subjects with AUD compared to the controls during the exposure to anger-provoking stimuli. Despite the same level of subjective anger during anger induction, the greater activations both in the IFG and dACC regions may suggestthat individuals with AUD have a greater propensity to undergo cognitive control and self-regulation while experiencing anger.

  • Background: Recent trends suggest that minimally invasive cardiac surgery reduces postoperative morbidity and offers a cosmetic benefit. This study was performed to evaluate the CPB time, ACC time, OP time, ICU stay and postoperative hospital stay following a lower partial sternotomy and those of the median sternotomy. Material and Method: A group of 26 adult patients who underwent cardiac surgery through lower partial sternotomy from August 1997 to July 1999(A group) were compared to 45 adult patients who underwent cardiac surgery through median sternotomy from January 1996 to July 1997(B group). The mean ages(46.4$\pm$14.6 years, A group and 46.8$\pm$13.2 years, B group) were similar. Operations were performed with central cannula and antegrade/retrograde blood cardioplegia. Result: There was no death in each group. No differences were found in CPB time, ACC time, OP time, ICU stay and postoperative hospital stay. Postoperative complications were sternal splitting in a patient in group A and a patient with bleeding that required reoperation and a patient with delayed wound closure in group B. Conclusion: The lower partial sternotomy offered a cosmetic benefit, but does not significantly reduced the length of operative time and hospital stay. Minimally invasive cardiac surgery will be applied increasing because of the suggested advantage and choosing a proper operative technique will be helpful.

We thought about the concept of dual security devices. Using vehicle's identifier ID of CAN, when Comparing Smat phone identifier ID value and identifier ID received from the Can in the Head, If the same ID is compared. At this point after the activity of the vehicle's ACC On/Off the system allows the vehicle's ignition.

  • Active sites and substrate bindings of 1-aminoxyclopropane-1-carboxylate oxidase (MD-ACO1) catalyzing the oxidative conversion of ACC to ethylene have been determined based on site-directed mutagenesis and comparative modeling methods. Molecular modeling based on the crystal structure of Isopenicillin N synthase (IPNS) provided MD-ACO1 structure. MD-ACO1 protein folds into a compact jelly roll shape, consisting of 9 ${\alpha}$-helices, 10 ${\beta}$-strands and several long loops. The MD-ACO1/ACC/Fe(II)/Ascorbate complex conformation was determined from automated docking program, AUTODOCK. The MD-ACO1/Fell complex model was consistent with well known binding motif information (HIS177-ASP179-HIS234). The cosubstrate, ascorbate is placed between iron binding pocket and Arg244 of MD-ACO1 enzyme, supporting the critical role of Arg244 for generating reaction product. These findings are strongly supported by previous biochemical data as well as site-directed mutagenesis data. The structure of enzyme/substrate suggests the structural mechanism for the biochemical role as well as substrate specificity of MD-ACO1 enzyme.

  • Track irregularities is one of key factors influencing running behavior of train. In order to ensure safety and ride comfort, it is highly important that relationship between track irregularity and running behavior of vehicle is identified and the criteria for track irregularities is adequately established. Numerical analysis was conducted to investigate influence of surface on running behavior of KTX and various wavelength and amplitude of surface were considered in numerical analysis. Derailment, lateral load, bogie acc., body acc. of numerical analysis results were investigated to evaluate the effect on track profile on safety and ride comfort of KTX.

Isolation and Characterization of the Plant Growth Promoting Rhizobacterium, Arthrobacter scleromae SYE-3 on the Yam Growth (식물성장촉진근권미생물 Arthrobacter scleromae SYE-3의 분리 및 Yam (Dioscorea japonica Thunb.) 성장에 미치는 영향 연구)

  • In this study, Arthrobacter scleromae SYE-3, which was isolated from indigenous plant in a subtropical region, Neigeria, with plant growth promoting activity was evaluated to determine the optimal culture condition. A bacterial strain SYE-3 had the IAA productivity ($89.15{\pm}0.36mg/L$) and ACC deaminase activity ($0.20{\pm}0.06$ at 72 hours). Also, optimal culture conditions such as temperature and pH of strain SYE-3 were $20^{\circ}C$ and 10 in LB medium, respectively. Strain SYE-3 had up to 3% salt tolerance in the LB medium. Plant growth promoting ability of strain SYE-3 using yam (Dioscorea japonica Thunb.) was evaluated. As a result, strain SYE-3 had showed very powerful effect on the increase of the shoot length and root biomass of yam (190.0% and 282.41% increase for 112 days, respectively). These results indicated that Arthrobacter scleromae SYE-3 can serve as a promising microbial resource for the biofertilizers of subtropical crops.

  • As per the recent technology related to safety of vehicles, Active safety system is being developed in combination withthe technology of electronic system. For example, ABC(Active Body Control), ABS(Antilock Brake System), ACC(Adaptive Cruise Control) are representative of this system. This technology is based on an electronic system, and shares a lot of data through network-system invehicles. Therefore, the control-algorism and the practicable application are realized in this research in order that CAN, network system for vehicles can run the brake device, which is composed mechanically and hand-operated. Additionally the possibility is confirmed that this control-system can be compatible with the existing electronic system in vehicles.
