Korean bitterling Acanthorhodeus gracilis Regan, 1908 is very similar to Acheilognathus chankaensis (Dybowski, 1872) having 12~14 dorsal fin rays, 10~11 anal fin rays and 35~36 lateral line scales. By analyzing these specimens and original descriptions, diagnostic characteristics of the genus Acanthorhodeus were included in the genus Acheilognathus and Acanthorhodeus gracilis was defined as a junior synonym of Acheilognathus chankaensis. The provisional keys are provided for identifying the nine species of Acheilognathus from Korea.
The characteristics of cranium, vertebral column and fin supports of Acanthorhodeus gracilis were examined. The fish did not have a fontanell in cranium nor process of supraethmoid. It had double orbitosphenoids and a basioccipital process developed from anterior portion of basioccipital. It had a high and triangular dorsal process on supraoccipital. In the urohyal, hypohyal attachment was bifurcated and horizontal and vertical plate were in an elongated rhombus shape with posterior edge pointed. It had teeth of 1-rowed, 5/5 and 4 free teeth. The fish did not have a coracoid foramen on shoulder girdle. It does not have a uroneural on ural centrum. It had a long and slender posterior process of pelvic bone. It had a large and flat supraneural. The fish had 14 or 15 interneural spines, of which the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th had single basiosts and the rest had double basiosts. It had 11 or 12 interhemal spines, of which the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th had single basiosts and the rest had double basiosts.
The ichthyofauna was investigated at the thirteen sites in the Tamjin River from August 1994 to February 1995. The collected fishes were classified into thirty-nine species belonging to 29 genera and 10 families. Among these 12 species were classified as endemic species or subspecies in Korea. Major species in this river system appeared to be Zacco temminchi, Acanthorhodeus gracilis, Zacco platypus, Rhodeus uyekii, Puntungia herzi and Squalidus gracilis majimae. Odontobutis obscura interrupta was collected for the first time in this area.
The lchthyofauna was investigated at the nine sites in the Tam-jin River from September 10, 1990 to October 12, 1993. The fishes were collected by means of a casting net and hooks. The collected fishes were classified into 34 species of 26 genera in 13 families. In the present study 3species of Acanthogobius hasta, Macropodus chinensis and Channa argus were newly collected. Among the 34 species, 12 were known to be endemic species in korean waters they are Rhodeus uyekii, Acheilognathus yamatsutae, Acanthorhodeus gracilis, Sarcocheilichtys variegatus wakiyae, Squalidus chankaensis tsuchigae, Squalidus japonicus, Squalidus gracilis, Microphysogobio yaluensis, Cobitis longicorpus, Pseudobagrus koreanus, Liobagrus mediadiposalis, Odontobutis platycephala. The dominant species were Zacco platypus, Zacco temmincki and Acheilognathus yamatsutae.

The ichthyofauna of Lake Cheongpyeong was investigated from April 2003 to November 2004. During the surveyed period 31 species belonging to nine families were collected. Dominant species in numbers was Hemibarbus labeo (relative abundance: 29.9%), subdominant was Acanthorhodeus gracilis (22.8%). Erythroculter erythropterus (14.6%) and Cyprinus auratus (6.3%) were also numerous. There were nine Korean endemic species belonging to three families, including Acheilgnathus yamatsutae. We need close observation on population fluctuations of Micropterus salmoides, an exotic carnivorous fish from North America, and Hemibarbus labeo and Erythroculter erythropterus, the dominant species by biomass in Lake Cheongpyeong.
A study of Han River fish assemblage dynamics for 4 years was conducted. From April 2005 to August, 2008, fishes inhabiting two sites of Han River were sampled for identification. For further analysis, 40 individuals of the dominant species were sampled monthly from March 2006 to November 2008. The fish assemblage at site 1 was dominated by Zacco platypus (32.69%), while the subdominant species were Acheilognathus yamatsutae (14.4%), Acanthorhodeus gracilis (9.43%), Squalidus japonicus coreanus (6.84%), and Tridentiger brevispinis (5.18%). The most abundant species at site 2 was Korean Chub (Zacco koreanus) with relative abundance of 62.45% and followed by Pungtungia herzi (10.29%), Coreoperca herzi (8.67%), and Coreoleuciscus splendidus (6.82%) as the subdominant species. At both sites, the endemics populations show an increasing pattern during the whole survey period, while the natives were declining in the last two years.
Fish community characteristics was investigated in Namyang Lake and tributaries in Han River basin, Korea from April to October 2015. During the period, there were 5,672 individuals of 20 species appeared from tributaries (St. 1~St. 6) and dominant species were Pseudorasbora parva (33.5%). Also 5,672 individuals of 20 species appeared in Namyang Lake (St. 7~St. 9) and dominant species were Carassius auratus (32.2%). There were 5 species of endemic species with Rhodeus uyekii, Acanthorhodeus gracilis, Squalidus japonicus coreanus, Abbottina springeri and Odontobutis interrupta from Namyang Lake watershed. The frequency of endemic species were higher tributaries (18.5%) than Namyang Lake (15%). Exotic species were 3 species with Carassius cuvieri, Lepomis macrochirus, and Micropterus salmoides. there were appeared more frequently Namyang Lake (15.0%) than tributaries(7.4%).
The freshwater fish fauna and physical characteristics of streams in Yeosu peninsula and Geumo Islands were surveyed at thirty nine stations in the period of 2003 and 2005. Most of the streams were short in length and narrow in flowing water width. Main materials of riverbed in most stations were cobble, pebble and gravel; those in the stations adjacent river mouth gravel and sand. In the river type, eighteen stations out of surveyed stations were upstream type: Aa. Thirty nine fish species belonging sixteen families were caught in this survey region. Among them twenty seven species were primary freshwater fishes and nine were peripheral. In the species composition of each family, there were the most species in Cyprinidae and Gobiidae, twelve and ten species, respectively. Endemic species of Korean peninsula in this region were eight species. One exotic fish species, Lepomis macrochirus was found in Yeosu peninsula. Dominant species in each district was Zacco temminckii in Yeosu peninsula, Rhinogobius brunneus in Dolsan Island, Leucopsarion petersii in Geumo island and Oryzias latipes in Gae island. In the analysis of community structure, it was appeared that the community of Yeosu peninsula was the most diverse and stable in this region; as the size of island became smaller, diversity and richness of community decreased. Kichulchoia brevifasciata did not caught in this survey, and it is possible that the species was extincted in this island. Acanthorhodeus gracilis and L. petersii were reported firstly in this region.

The purpose of this study was to analyze fish communities in the Wonju stream located in Wonju-si in Gangwon-do, and to evaluate the health of the stream through past and present changes. We performed investigations four times from May 2015 to September 2016. In the survey, 5,201 individuals which belonged to 27 species and 9 families were collected. Zacco platypus was the dominant species and Pungtungia herziwas the subdominant species. Eight Korean endemic species (Acanthorhodeus gracilis, Zacco koreanus, Coreoleuciscus splendidus, Squalidus gracilis majimae, Microphysogobio yaluensis, Iksookimia koreensis, Koreocobitis rotundicaudata, Coreoperca herzi) were observed and showed a ratio of 16.54%. The fish community of dominance ($0.72{\pm}0.10$), diversity ($1.37{\pm}0.32$), evenness ($0.61{\pm}0.13$), and richness ($1.70{\pm}0.23$) were evaluated. According to our analysis of tolerance guilds, the total individual number of intermediate species was higher than the sensitive and tolerant species. As a result of the trophic guild analysis, the omnivore and insectivore species were relatively high. The value of the qualitative habitat evaluation index (QHEI) in the wonju stream was averaged 121.2 (${\pm}23.4$), indicating a suboptimal condition. Stream health showed that the fish assessment index (FAI) value was an A to C grade in the Wonju stream. A correlation coefficient analysis with FAI and various factors was analysed statistically, and had a high correlation in QHEI, with the omnivore species, insectivore species, intermediate species, sensitive species, dominance, diversity, evenness, and richness.
The development of eggs and larvae, and minute scale-like tubercles on the skin surface of larval Acantlaorhodeus gracilis from Korea were observed. They spawned from late March through the middle of June. A fish spawned at least 5 times and the number of eggs averaged 304 per oviposition. Unfertilized eggs are nearly ovoid-shaped(mean$\pm$SD=$2.09{\pm}0.04\;mm$ in length with range of 2.05 to 2.13 mm and mean$\pm$SD=$1.26{\pm}0.02\;mm$ in breadth with range of 1.24 to 1.30 mm measured for the 50 eggs) and opaque yellow color. The tip of egg membrane at the animal pole side swelled and formed a few hilly projections. The shape of the eggs was just like a loquat. Most of embryos began to hatch out in thirty-eight hours after insemination at $22{\pm}1^{\circ}C$ in water temperature. As regards the morphological characters of the eggs and larval development, Acan. gracilis was similar to Acan. asmussi, Acheilognathus rhombeus, A. longipinnis and Pseudoperilampus typus. The larvae of this species is unique particularly in the following two characters, i.e., 1) scale-like tubercles ellipsoided in a diagonal cross section on the whole body and 2) incessant wiggly movement pattern as that of fly maggot, with the larvae of the above mentioned species. These characters seem to reflect the phylogenetic relationships among acheilognathine fishes. On the other hand, this species and Acan. asmussi are spring-summer spawning bitterlings. And also these species never retard the larval growth in such larval stage as the duration from Stage B to Stage D.
