Activated carbon (AC) derived from coconut shells (CS-AC) was obtained through pyrolysis at 700℃ and subsequently activated with H3PO4. AC was ground in a Wiley mill several times to form powder particles at particle scales of 80, 100, and 200 meshes. The characterization of the AC was studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and surface area analysis (SBET). The CS-AC-200 mesh resulted in a higher percentage of mesopores and surface area. This particle size had a larger surface area with angular, irregular, and crushed shapes in the SEM view. The smaller particles had smoother surfaces, less wear, and increased curing depth and ratio of the hardness of the resin composite. Based on the characterization results of the AC, it is evident that CS-AC with a 200 mesh particle size has the potential to be used as a filler in biocomposites.

In this paper, the characteristics of the household AC power line network is analyzed for the low bit rate powerline communication (PLC) in the frequency range from 10㎑ to 450㎑ The PLC channel transfer characteristics including its characteristic impedance are derived based on the network topology which is constructed with the household power lines loaded with the various types of electric apparatus. Both the distributed circuit analysis and the lumped circuit model based analysis are applied for the characterization of the PLC channel and the results are compared by the computer simulations. The analysis illustrates very well the adverse effects caused by the loading of electric apparatus and as well those casued by the reflection of wavers in the household AC Power line communication network.
As a convenient means for the characterization of the wall voltage and wall charge of AC PDPs during the sustain period, an equivalent circuit model for AC PDPs is presented. The equivalent circuit model for AC PDPs consists of capacitors and thyristors. The equivalent circuit model is based on the physical structure of the AC PDP and the I-V characteristic of the discharge space. This equivalent circuit model can be easily implemented in the standard simulators such as SPICE and can easily simulate the variation of the current, charge and voltage involved in AC PDPs as the supply voltage varies.
Particle size distributions in 10 nm magnetite ferrofluids are analyzed based on both dc and ac magnetic measurements. Modified log-normal distributions are used for fitting the experimental results, which allows for a proper account of the narrow distributions. The calculated average particle sizes are in good agreement with the TEM results. However the ac method gives a much narrower distribution width than that of the dc magnetization curve fit. The proposed measurements combined with the analysis methods are useful for the characterization of ferrofluids being considered for biomedical applications.

Quantum-dot materials have introduced novel applications in organic light-emitting diodes and solar cells. The size controllability and structure modifications have continuously been upgrading the applicability to optoelectronic and flat-panel displays. In particular, quantum-dot organic light-emitting diodes (QLEDs) are a device driven through the electrical field applied to the electrical diodes. The QLEDs are affected by the constituent materials and the corresponding device structures. Conventionally, the electrical properties are characterized only in terms of dc-based current-voltage characteristics. The dynamic change in light-emitting diodes should be characterized in emitted and non-emitted states. Therefore, the frequency-dependent impedance can offer different information on the electrical performance in QLED. The current work reports an auxiliary information on the electrical and optical features originating from quantum-dot organic light-emitting diodes. The empirical characterizations are discussed towards an experimental tool in optimizing the light-emitting diodes.

Lysozymes are well-known antibacterial enzymes that mainly target the peptidoglycan layer of the bacterial cell wall. Animal lysozymes are mainly categorized as g-type, c-type, and i-type based on protein sequence and structural differences. In this study, c-type (AcLysC) and g-like-type (AcLysG-like) lysozymes from Amphiprion clarkii were characterized in silico via expressional and functional approaches. According to in silico analysis, open reading frames of AcLysC and AcLysG-like were 429 bp and 570 bp, respectively, encoding the corresponding polypeptide chains with 142 and 189 amino acids. Elevated expression levels of AcLysC and AcLysG-like were observed in the liver and the heart tissues, respectively, as evidenced by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction assays. AcLysC and AcLysG-like transcript levels were upregulated in gills, head kidney, and blood cells following experimental immune stimulation. Recombinant AcLysC exhibited potent lytic activity against Vibrio anguillarum, whereas recombinant AcLysG-like showed remarkable antibacterial activity against Vibrio harveyi and Streptococcus parauberis, which was further evidenced by scanning electron microscopic imaging of destructed bacterial cell walls. The findings of this study collectively suggest the potential roles of AcLysC and AcLysG-like in host immune defense.
Multiple synaptic boutons (MSBs) have been reported to be synapse with two or more postsynaptic terminals in one presynaptic terminal. These MSBs are known to be increased by various brain stimuli. In the motor cortex, increased number of MSB was observed in both acrobat training (AC) model and traumatic brain injury (TBI) model. Interestingly one is a physiological stimuli and the other is pathological insult. The purpose of this study is to compare the connectivity of MSBs between AC model and TBI model in the cerebral motor cortex, based on the hypothesis that the connectivity of MSBs might be different according to the models. The motor cortex was dissected from perfused brain of each experimental animal, the samples were prepared for routine transmission electron microscopy. The 60~70 serial sections were mounted on the one-hole grid and MSB was analyzed. The 3-dimensional analysis revealed that 94% of MSBs found in AC model synapse two postsynaptic spines from same dendrite. But, 28% MSBs from TBI models synapse two postsynaptic spines from different dendrite. This imply that the MSBs observed in motor cortex of AC model and TBI model might have different circuits for the processing the information.

This paper reports fabrication and characterization of a pressure sensor using a pitch-based carbon fiber. Pitch-based carbon fibers have been shown to exhibit the piezoresistive effect, in which the electric resistance of the carbon fiber changes under mechanical deformation. The main structure of pressure sensors was built by performing backside etching on a SOI wafer and creating a suspended square membrane on the front side. An AC electric field which causes dielectrophoresis was used for the alignment and deposition of a carbon fiber across the microscale gap between two electrodes on the membrane. The fabricated pressure sensors were tested by applying static pressure to the membrane and measuring the resistance change of the carbon fiber. The resistance change of carbon fibers clearly shows linear response to the applied pressure and the calculated sensitivities of pressure sensors are $0.25{\sim}0.35 and 61.8 ${\Omega}/k{\Omega}{\cdot}bar$ for thicker and thinner membrane, respectively. All these observations demonstrated the possibilities of carbon fiber-based pressure sensors.

Crystallized $LiMn_{2-y}Mg_{y}O_4$ powder was prepared by calcing the mixture of LiOH.$H_2O$, $MnO_2$ and MgO at $800^{\circ}C$ for 36h in an air atmosphere. The structure of $LiMn_{2-y}Mg_{y}O_4$ crystallites was analyzed from powder X-ray diffraction data as a cubic spinel, space group Fd3m. Though all cathode material showed spinel phase based on cubic phase in X-ray diffraction, other peaks gradually exhibited and became intense with increasing y value in $LiMn_{2-y}Mg_{y}O_4$. However, ununiform which calculated by (111) face and (222) face was constant in spite of the increase of y value, except pure $LiMn_2O_4$. AC impedance of Li/$LiMn_{2-y}Mg_{y}O_4$ cells revealed the similar resistance of about $70\Omega$ before cycling. In addition, The impedance of Li/$LiMn_{1.9}Mg_{0.1}O_4$ cell changed during charge and discharge or after cycling.
By appliying an slternate pulsed magnetic field -generated by using a sequential ignition circuit and a magnet exciting circuit- with peak value of about 10 T to the rod type Nd based magnet Nd2Fe12.7Cr1.3B with length of 5 mm and diameter of 3.6 mm, the basic magnetic properties such as saturation magnetization, residual magnetization, coercivity, maximum energy products, magnetic anisotropy and anisotropic field are investigated with obtaining the major and minor J-H loops of the magnet. The increase in coercivity due to eddy currents in ac measurement of coercivity is calculated considering eddy current loss by analyzing a wave of generating magnetic field. The average coercivity calculated for the magnet is about 12.2 kOe, anisotropy magnetic field and anisotropic constant are measured as 60 kOe 2.43 Mj/$m^3$, respectively.
