The subjects of this study were 80 first grade female students, sampled from elementary schools in Seoul. The instruments of this study were the Personal Safety Questionnaire (PSQ) and 'What if' Situations Test (WIST) modified by the present researcher. The t-test and Pearson's correlation coefficient were applied to analyze the data of this study. The results of the analysis were (1) after the Behavioral Skills Training, the children of the training group showed a higher level of knowledge about child sexual abuse than the control group. (2) After the Behavioral Skills Training, the children of the training group showed more adequate self-defensive skills than the control group when they faced situations of possible child sexual abuse. (3) The higher the level of knowledge about child sexual abuse, the more adequate self-defensive skills in situations of child sexual abuse. These results supported the effectiveness of Behavioral Skills Training as preventive education on potential child sexual abuse.

  • This study investigated developmental pathways mediating effects of child abuse on peer rejection. Participants were 904 poor children aged 10-15 from 16 nationwide cities/provinces who receive financial sponsorship from Childfund in cooperation with the Ministry for Health, Welfare and Family Affairs. Structural equation modeling was employed for statistical analyses. Results showed that child abuse was directly associated with heightened risk of rejection by peers; the relationship was indirectly mediated by aggression and cognitive ability. The hypothesized partially mediated model had a better model fit than the fully mediated model. Aggression and low cognitive ability, significant effects of abuse, were associated with peer rejection. Social withdrawal, also associated with child abuse, did not account for the association between abuse and peer rejection.

  • For this study of adolescent attitudes toward child sexual abuse, 200 students attending high school and college participated in a group survey. The Child Sexual Abuse Myth Scale (Collings, 1999) was used to measure social attitudes toward child sexual abuse. Overall, the attitudes of the respondents placed between negative and positive attitudes. Nevertheless, strong negative myths and stereotypes, particularly blame diffusion, denial of abusiveness, and restrictive abuse stereotypes were found in specific situations. High school students and male students had more negative myths and stereotypes than college students and female students. Hierarchical regression analysis indicated the variables of education level and gender as the most important predictors in explaining students' attitudes toward child sexual abuse.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze precedents related with child abuse for protection of the rights of the child. There should be the law related with 'punishment for child abuse,' which is the grounds of punishment, to make a precedent in the law punishing for 'child abuse,' but there is the concept only for 'child abuse' in the Child Welfare Law, the fundamental law; therefore, for a direct judgment for punishment, only precedents of 'child abuse' related with loss of parental rights and judgements for criminal cases, civil cases and laws covering special cases have been made. For that reason, 'the special law related with punishment for child abuse cases' is desperately required (On last December 23, 2013, the special law related with punishment for child abuse cases passed the National Assembly). Hence, precedent analysis had performed by grouping precedent from 2000 to 2013 which were not judged as child abuse in trial but can be regarded as child abuse. When analyzing each precedent according to the contents of analysis and judgment by fact relevance in this study, problems which the current legislative system has were deducted through an implication of each case by diagnosing using diagraming after classifying lower instance terminated cases, which precedents of the Supreme Court and judgments sent to the Supreme Court were excluded, while excluding cases settled in the civil level and classifying analysis of civil case precedents which did not become a criminal case and completed as a civil case, analysis of criminal case precedents, classification of precedents of loss of the parental rights (regarding child abuse) and precedents of any other special laws. And compensatory tasks for special laws regarding punishment of child abuse were presented while suggesting compensatory tasks for the legislation regarding deducted problems.

  • The purpose of this meta-analysis was to address two questions: (1) To what extent are types of child abuse related to psycho-social maladjustment of the abused? (2) Do relations found in this study vary by the gender, sample size, year of publication, types of publication, and respondents' age? The materials of this study were based on 14 variables obtained from 104 published and unpublished (doctoral disserations and master's theses) research papers over a span of 26 years(1990-2016). Child abuse related variables were categorized into physical abuse, emotional abuse, neglect, and abuse while psycho-social maladjustment grouped as internal (anxiety, depression, withdrawal, and anxiety/depression) and external problem behaviors(aggression, problem behavior, and delinquency). Major findings were: Medium effect size of emotional abuse, abuse, physical abuse, neglect on psycho-social maladjustment among the abused were calculated. Emotional abuse was highly related to every internal and external problem behaviors. Neglect was found to have higher effect size in external problem behaviors than internal problem behaviors. Publication types moderated the association between types of child abuse and internalization while year of publication, number of samples and publication types showed moderation effects on the relation between types of child abuse and externalization. Finding suggest that future studies on child sexual abuse and those on intervention outcome are required and use of well validated instruments are essential.
