  • This paper proposes service-oriented composition and verification techniques for incrementally extracting high-level abstract behavior of unit components in a systematic manner. Proposed techniques include the definition for abstract component, which is a basic building-block of the abstraction process, an algorithm for port-based synchronized abstraction, and projection abstraction. A verification framework is developed using the proposed techniques and its efficiency is demonstrated through a case example.

  • The aim of this research is the development of a CAPP system which can use the old experience of process planning to generate a process plan for a new part and learn from its own experience using the concept of stratified case-based reasoning(CBR). A process plan is determined through the hierarchical process planning procedure that is based on the hierarchical feature structure of a part. Each part and case have their own multiple abstractions that are determined by the feature structure of the part. Retrieving the case in stratified case-based process planning is accomplished by retrieving the abstraction that is most similar to the input part abstraction in each abstraction level of the case-base. A new process plan is made by the adaptation that translates the old case's process plan into the process plan of a new part. Operations, machines and tools, setups and operation sequence in each setup are determined in the adaptation of abstraction using some algorithms and the reasoning based on knowledge-base. By saving a new part and its process plan as a case, the system can use this new case in the future to generate a process plan of a similar part. That is, the system can learn its own experience of process planning. A new case is stored by adding the new abstractions that are required to save as the new abstraction to the existing abstractions in the case-base.

  • Preservation of geometrical context of terrains in a digitized format is useful in handling and making modification to the data. Digitization of three-dimensional terrain still proves a great challenge due to heavy load of context required to retain details of topological and geometrical information. Methods of simplification, restoration and multi-level terrain generation are often employed to transform the original data into a compressed digital format. However, reduction of the stored data size comes at an expense of loss of details in the original data set. This article reports on an alternative scheme for simplification and restoration of terrain data. The algorithm utilizes the fact that the terrain formation and patterns can be predicted and modeled through the fractal algorithm. This method was used to generate multi-level terrain model based on NGIS digital maps with preserving geometrical context of terrains.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyse how a mathematically gifted student constructs a nested signification model of three signs, while he abstracts the solution of a given NIM game. The findings of a qualitative case study have led to conclusions as follows. In general, we know that most of mathematically gifted students(within top 0.01%) in the elementary school might be excellent in constructing representamen and interpretant But it depends on the cases. While a student, one of best, is making the meaning of object in general level of abstraction, he also has a difficulty in rising from general level to formal level. When he made the interpretant in general level with researcher's advice, he was able to rise formal level and constructed a nested signification model of three signs. We suggested 3 considerations to teach the mathematically gifted students in elementary school level.

  • By considering low power design at higher levels of abstraction rather than at lower levels of abstraction, we can apply various transformation techniques to a system design with wider view and obtain much more effective power reduction with less cost and effort. In this paper, a transformation technique, called power - conscious loop folding is proposed for high level synthesis of a low power system. Our work is focused on reducing the power consumed by functional units in adata path dominated circuit through the decrease of switching activity. Te transformation algorithm has been implemented and integrated into HYPER, a high level synthesis system for experiments. In our experiments, we could achieve a pwoer reduction of up to 50% for data path dominated circuits.

  • In order to reuse a register transfer level (RTL)-based IP block, it takes another architectural exploration in which the RTL will be put, and it also takes virtual platforms to develop the driver and applications software. Due to the increasing demands of new technology, the hardware and software complexity of organizing embedded systems is growing rapidly. Accordingly, the traditional design methodology cannot stand up forever to designing complex devices. In this paper, I introduce an electronic system level (ESL)-based approach to designing complex hardware with a derivative of SystemVerilog. I adopted the concept of reuse with higher levels of abstraction of the ESL language than traditional HDLs to design multiplication server farms. Using the concept of ESL, I successfully implemented server farms as well as a test bench in one simulation environment. It would have cost a number of Verilog/C simulations if I had followed the traditional way, which would have required much more time and effort.

  • Cooperative query answering is a research effort to develop a fault-tolerant and intelligent database system using the semantic knowledge base constructed from the underlying database. Such knowledge base has two aspects of usage. One is supporting the cooperative query answering Process for providing both an exact answer and neighborhood information relevant to a query. The other is supporting ongoing maintenance of the knowledge base for accommodating the changes in the knowledge content and database usage purpose. Existing studies have mostly focused on the cooperative query answering process but paid little attention on the dynamic knowledge base maintenance. This paper proposes a multi-level knowledge representation framework called Knowledge Abstraction Hierarchy (KAH) that can not only support cooperative query answering but also permit dynamic knowledge maintenance. The KAH consists of two types of knowledge abstraction hierarchies. The value abstraction hierarchy is constructed by abstract values that are hierarchically derived from specific data values in the underlying database on the basis of generalization and specialization relationships. The domain abstraction hierarchy is built on the various domains of the data values and incorporates the classification relationship between super-domains and sub-domains. On the basis of the KAH, a knowledge abstraction database is constructed on the relational data model and accommodates diverse knowledge maintenance needs and flexibly facilitates cooperative query answering. In terms of the knowledge maintenance, database operations are discussed for the cases where either the internal contents for a given KAH change or the structures of the KAH itself change. In terms of cooperative query answering, database operations are discussed for both the generalization and specialization Processes, and the conceptual query handling. A prototype system has been implemented at KAIST that demonstrates the usefulness of KAH in ordinary database application systems.

  • Most conventional database systems support specific queries that are concerned only with data that match a query qualification precisely. A cooperative query answering supports query analysis, query relaxation and provides approximate answers as well as exact answers. The key problem in the cooperative answering is how to provide an approximate functionality for alphanumeric as well as categorical queries. In this paper, we propose a metricized knowledge abstraction hierarchy that supports multi-level data abstraction hierarchy and distance metric among data values. In order to facilitate the query relaxation, a knowledge representation framework has been adopted, which accommodates semantic relationships or distance metrics to represent similarities among data values. The numeric domains also compatibly incorporated in the knowledge abstraction hierarchy by calculating the distance between target record and neighbor records.

  • The purpose of this paper is to propose a securely personalized context-aware cooperative query that supports a multi-level data abstraction hierarchy and conceptual distance metric among data values, while considering privacy concerns around user context awareness. The conceptual distance expresses a semantic similarity among data values with a quantitative measure, and thus the conceptual distance enables query results to be ranked. To show the feasibility of the methodology proposed in this paper we have implemented a prototype system in the area of site search in a large-scale shopping mall.
