As a research on the practical approaches of gamma irradiation for the reduction of egg allergy, cakes including gamma-irradiated egg white were manufactured, and rheological characteristics and sensory qualities of the cakes were evaluated. Egg white was separated from whole egg and then gamma-irradiated with the absorbed dose of 10 or 20 kGy White layer cake, pound cake and sponge cake were made with irradiated egg white and used to the subsequent experiments. Firmness of all samples containing irradiated egg white was higher than that of control. Retrogradation of pound and sponge cakes containing irradiated egg white was delayed, and the result showed that the usage of irradiated egg white was better at the point of rheological storage ability. Effects of irradiated egg white on the sensory quality were different depending onto the properties of each product. Radiation off-odor was observed in the a11 samples containing irradiated egg white. To maintain the sensory Qualify, adequate methods such as masking effects should be developed during manufacture.
Purpose: To observe the histologic pattern of healing in molar tooth extraction sockets of streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats following irradiation. Materials and Methods: Mature Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into three groups: control, diabetic, and diabetic-irradiated groups. Diabetes mellitus was induced by injecting streptozotocin. Control rats were injected with a citrate buffer only. After 5 days, the right maxillary first molar was extracted under general anesthesia from each of the rats. After the extraction, rats in the diabetic-irradiated group were irradiated with a single absorbed dose of 10 Gy to the head and neck region. The rats were killed at 1, 3, 7, 14, 21, and 28 days after treatment. Tissue sections were stained with hematoxylin-eosin and Masson's trichrome. Results: In the diabetic and diabetic-irradiated groups, the early healing process of the socket extraction was similar to the control group, but bone formation was delayed at 7 days after the treatment. In the diabetic-irradiated group, alveolar bone surrounding the extraction socket showed signs of necrosis at 3 days after treatment, and hemorrhage was observed in connective tissue within the extraction socket at 14 days after treatment. Conclusion: This experiment revealed that the healing process of the extraction socket was severely delayed and retarded by irradiation in the diabetic state.
Objectives: The internal dose of ethyl parabens is important in order to evaluate the risk of this chemical. However, there are little PK model data for parabens to apply this. This experiment attempted PK modeling to ascertain PK values. Methods: Twenty mg/kg ethyl paraben was administered orally to Sprague-Dawley rats at the same point in time. The rats were sacrificed at times 0, 15, 30 and minutes, and 1, 2, 4, 8, 12, 24 hours after oral gavage. Blood and urine were collected and pretreated for analysis. Accuracy, precision and LOD (limit of detection) were calculated for this analysis. Ethyl paraben, detected by HPLC-MS, was applied to PK modeling using Berkeley Madonna. Results: This study showed 100.1-103.7% accuracy, 1.4-3.7% precision and a 1.0 ng/mL limit of detection. Orally administered ethyl paraben reached maximum concentration after 30 minutes of dosing in serum and urine of rats. The concentrations were 2,354 ng/mL in serum and 386,000 ng/mL in urine samples. These peak concentrations were excreted after one hour of intubation over 12 hours. For the pharmacokinetic parameters of ethyl paraben revealed using Berkeley Madonna, the absorption rate was 5.539/hour, the excretion rate was 0.048/hour, the half-life was 14.441 hours and AUC was 481,186 ng hour/mL. Conclusion: Orally administered ethyl paraben was absorbed rapidly in rats and excreted in urine. This chemical, ethyl paraben, accumulated in the body but was excreted over 12 hours after dosing.

In the present study, we measured the pure beta particle energy spectra of $^{147}Pm$, $^{85}Kr$, $^{90}Sr+^{90}Y$ radionuclide sources. We confirmed the residual maximum energies of KRISS sources meet the requirement of ISO 6980 and calculated mass collision stopping power ratio, which is essential for absolute measurement of absorbed dose from the reference ${\beta}$-rays. The residual maximum energies of KRISS $^{147}Pm$, $^{85}Kr$, $^{90}Sr+^{90}Y$ sources are 0.14, 0.57 and 0.93 MeV, respectively and the mass collision stopping power ratios are 1.123, 1.120 and 1.109, respectively.

The present study was designed to elucidate the effects of the Co-60 γ irradiation and/or calciumdeficient diet on the dentin and cementum formation of rat molar. The pregnant three-week old SpragueDawley rats were used for the study. The experimental group was divided into two groups, irradiation/normal diet group and irradiation/calcium-deficient diet group. The control group was nonirradiation/normal diet group. The abdomen of the rats at the 19th day of pregnancy were irradiated with single absorbed dose of 350cGy. The rat pups were sacrificed on the 14th day after delivery and the maxillae including molar tooth germ were taken. The specimens including the 1st molar tooth germ were prepared to make tissue sections for light and transmission electron microscopy. Some of tissue sections for light microscopy were stained immunohistochemically with anti-fibronectin antibody. The results were as follows; 1. The Hertwig's epithelial root sheath cells, which are related to the differentiation of the tooth-forming cells, showed irregular cellular arrangement, decrease of intercellular junctional complex, and decreased immunoreactivity to the fibronectin after irradiation. These were more severe in the irradiation/calcium-deficient diet group. 2. The cementoblasts at the cementum-forming area showed chromatin clumpings after irradiation. The immu noreactivity to the fibronectin was weaken after irradiation, especially irradiation/calcium-deficient diet group. 3. The odontoblasts at the dentin-forming area showed increase of lysosomes in the cytoplasm and destruction of intercellular junctional complex. The irradiation/calcium-deficient diet group showed decrease of number and density of the electron dense particles and a large number of vacuoles scattered in the dentin matrix. The immunoreactivity was weaken.

The collagen fibers showed cystic change and low immunoreactivity to the fibronectin. 2. In the cementum forming area, the cementoblasts of Group 2 showed decrease of number and atrophic change. The cementoblasts of Group 3 showed edematous change, atrophy of cytoplasm, and clumping of nucleus. 3. In the alveolar bone forming area, the bone of Group 2 was thin and various degree of immunoreactivity to the osteonectin. Group 3 showed edematous osteoblasts, fibrous degeneration of bone marrow, and weak immunoreactivity to the osteonectin.
Cefixime is an orally absorbed 3rd generation cephalosporin with a broad spectrum of activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and is highly resistant to $\beta-lactamase$ degradation. This study was carried out to evaluate the bioavailability of a new test drug of cefixime (100 mg/capsule) relative to the reference drug. The bioavailability was conducted on 20 healthy volunteers who received a single dose (400 mg) of the test and the reference drugs in the fasting state, in a randomized balanced 2-way crossover design. After dosing, serial blood samples were collected for a period of 12 hours. Plasma was analyzed for cefixime by a sensitive and validated HPLC assay. The major pharmacokinetic parameters $(AUC_{0-12hr},\;C_{max},\;T_{max})$ were calculated from the plasma concentration-time data of each volunteer. The $AUC_{0-12hr},\;C_{max}\;and\;T_{max}$ of the test drug were $36.91\pm11.85\;{\mu}g{\cdot}hr/ml,\;5.47\pm1.61\;{\mu}g/ml,\;and\;4.00\pm0.65\;hr,$ respectively, and those of the reference drug were $34.08\pm8.81\;{\mu}g{\cdot}hr/ml,\;5.25\pm1.40\;{\mu}g/ml,\;and\;4.20\pm0.62\;hr$, respectively. Mean differences of those parameters were 8.32, 4.29, and $4.76\%$, respectively, and the least significant differences at $\alpha$=0.05 for $AUC_{0-12hr},\;C_{max},\;T_{max}$ were 16.02, 13.78, and $11.76\%$, respectively. In conclusion, the test drug was bioequivalent with the reference drug.

Background: The physician's hands are close to the X-ray field in C-arm fluoroscopy-guided pain interventions. We prospectively investigated the radiation attenuation of Proguard RR-2 gloves. Methods: In 100 cases, the effective doses (EDs) of two dosimeters without a radiation-reducing glove were collected. EDs from the two dosimeters-one dosimeter wrapped with a glove and the other dosimeter without a glove-were also measured at the side of the table (Group 1, 140 cases) and at a location 20 cm away from the side of the table (Group 2, 120 cases). Mean differences such as age, height, weight, radiation absorbed dose (RAD), exposure time, ED, and ratio of EDs were analyzed. Results: In the EDs of two dosimeters without gloves, there were no significant differences ($39.0{\pm}36.3{\mu}Sv$ vs. $38.8{\pm}36.4{\mu}Sv$) (P = 0.578). The RAD ($192.0{\pm}182.0radcm^2$) in Group 2 was higher than that ($132.3{\pm}103.5radcm^2$) in Group 1 (P = 0.002). The ED ($33.3{\pm}30.9{\mu}Sv$) of the dosimeter without a glove in Group 1 was higher than that ($12.3{\pm}8.8{\mu}Sv$) in Group 2 (P < 0.001). The ED ($24.4{\pm}22.4{\mu}Sv$) of the dosimeter wrapped with a glove in Group 1 was higher than that ($9.2{\pm}6.8{\mu}Sv$) in Group 2 (P < 0.001). No significant differences were noted in the ratio of EDs ($73.5{\pm}6.7%$ vs. $74.2{\pm}9.3%$, P = 0.469) between Group 1 and Group 2. Conclusions: Proguard RR-2 gloves have a radiation attenuation effect of 25.8-26.5%. The radiation attenuation is not significantly different by intensity of scatter radiation or the different RADs of C-arm fluoroscopy.

Citrus canker caused by Xanthomonas citri subsp. citri (Xcc) is one of the most important bacterial diseases of citrus. Because citrus canker is not found in many countries including European Union and Australia, Xcc is strictly regulated in order to prevent its spread. In this study, the effects of X-irradiation on Xcc growth either in the suspension or on the surface of citrus fruits were investigated. The suspension containing $1{\times}10^7cfu/ml$ of Xcc was irradiated with different absorbed doses of X-irradiation ranging from 50 to 400 Gy. The results showed that Xcc was fully dead at 400 Gy of X-irradiation. To determine the effect of X-irradiation on quarantine, the Xcc-inoculated citrus fruits were irradiated with different X-ray doses at which Xcc was completely inhibited by an irradiation dose of 250 Gy. The $D_{10}$ value for Xcc on citrus fruits was found to be 97 Gy, indicating the possibility of direct application on citrus quarantine without any side sterilizer. Beside, presence of Xcc on the surface of asymptomatic citrus fruits obtained from citrus canker-infected orchards was noted. It indicated that the exporting citrus fruits need any treatment so that Xcc on the citrus fruits should be completely eliminated. Based on these results, ionizing radiation can be considered as an alternative method of eradicating Xcc for export of citrus fruits.
The packaging effect on physicochemical changes in irradiated sausage stored at -2$0^{\circ}C$ was studied. Emulsion-type cooked pork sausage was made with (156 ppm) or without NaNO$_2$ (0 ppm), and packaged in three different conditions such as aerobic, vacuum and $CO_2$ (100%). The samples irradiated at 0, 5 and 10 kGy absorbed dose, and the total number of microorganisms, lipid oxidation, color and texture were analyzed during frozen storage at-2$0^{\circ}C$. Irradiation of the sausage at 10 kGy completely controlled microbial growth during storage. An NaNO$_2$ addition to the sausage significantly reduced lipid oxidation, and the TBARS value of the sausage with aerobic packaging was higher than that with the vacuum and $CO_2$ packaging. The NaNO$_2$ addition increased Hunter color a-value dramatically, but no packaging effect was found (p > 0.05). Irradiation influenced shear values resulting in lower shear values in 10 kGy-irradiated sausages with aerobic packaging, and $CO_2$ packaged sausage showed comparatively lower shear value than other packaging methods. From the results, vacuum or $CO_2$ (100%) packaging were better than aerobic packaging for frozen stored pork sausage, especially far microbial quality and lipid oxidation.
