  • Recently a demand for high precision absolute position transducer is increasing in order to control thickness in steel industry. LVDT (linear variable differential transformer) is widely used to measure the absolute position in the linearly moving cylinder under poor factory environment. In this paper we implement the three phase LVDT with a high resolution of one micron and L/D (LVDT to digital) converter. First we designed U, V, and W three phase signaling using FPGA. Second a pulse output algorithm is designed for position information with A and B phase waveforms. Finally the performance is compared with previous sensors. Experiments show that the linearity deviation error is 0.009788 [mm] and the average sinusoidal THD is 0.0751%, which means 2.2% and 33% more improved result than the previous sensors respectively.

  • This paper presents the development of a magneto-optical encoder for higher precision and smaller size. In general, optical encoders can have very high precision based on the position information of the slate, while their sizes tend to be larger due to the presence of complex and large components, such as an optical module. In contrast, magnetic encoders have exactly the opposite characteristics, i.e., small size and low precision. In order to achieve encoder features encompassing the advantages of both optical and magnetic encoders, i.e., high precision and small size, we designed a magneto-optical encoder and developed a method to detect absolute position, by compensating for the error of the hall sensor using the linear table compensation method. The performance of the magneto-optical encoder was evaluated through an experimental testbed.

  • Recently, with the development of service robots and the concept of ubiquitous, the position estimation of mobile objects has received great interest. Some of the localization schemes are introduced, which provide the relative location of the moving objects subjected to accumulated errors. To implement a real time localization system, a new absolute position estimation method for a mobile robot in indoor environment is proposed. Design and implementation of the localization system comes from the usage of active beacon systems (based upon RFID technology). The active beacon system is composed of an RFID receiver and an ultra-sonic transmitter. The RFID receiver gets the synchronization signal from the mobile robot and the ultra-sonic transmitter sends out the traveling signal to be used for measuring the distance. Position of a mobile robot in a three dimensional space can be calculated basically from the distance information from three beacons and the absolute position information of the beacons themselves. In some case, the mobile robot can acquire the ultrasonic signals from only one or two beacons, due to the obstacles located along the moving path. In this paper, a position estimation scheme using fewer than three sensors is developed. Also, the extended Kalman filter algorithm is applied for the improvement of position estimation accuracy of the mobile robot.

  • This paper describes the implementation of a precise underwater navigation solution using a multiple sensor fusion technique based on USBL, GPS, DVL and AHRS measurements for the operation of a remotely operated mine disposal vehicle (MDV). The estimation of accurate 6DOF positions and attitudes is the key factor in executing dangerous and complicated missions. To implement the precise underwater navigation, two strategies are chosen in this paper. Firstly, the sensor frame alignment to the body frame is conducted to enhance the performance of a standalone dead-reckoning algorithm. Secondly, absolute position data measured by USBL is fused to prevent cumulative integration error. The heading alignment error is identified by comparing the measured absolute positions with the DR algorithm results. The performance of the developed approach is evaluated with the experimental data acquired by MDV in the South-sea trial.

  • A new method of estimating the pose of a mobile-task robot is developed based upon an active calibration scheme. The utility of a mobile-task robot is widely recognized, which is formed by the serial connection of a mobile robot and a task robot. For the control of the mobile robot, an absolute position sensor is necessary. This paper proposes an active calibration scheme to estimate the pose of a mobile robot that carries a task robot on the top. The active calibration scheme is to estimate a pose of the mobile robot using the relative position/orientation to a known object whose location, size, and shape are known a priori. Through the homogeneous transformation, the absolute position/orientation of the camera is calculated and that is propagated to getting the pose of a mobile robot. With the experiments in the corridor, the proposed active calibration scheme is verified experimentally.

  • Since 1960s, a container shipping volume has increased dramatically and continuous on a trend of rapid growth, and so the number of containers handled at the port increases. The position measurement of the yard crane is very important for improving the operating efficiency of the port. This paper describes the method to measure the absolute position of yard crane accurately and rapidly, using both the output pulse of an encoder and infrared sensors. The crane position is calculated by counting the output pulse of an incremental encoder, which is mounted on the wheel in the crane. By the way, the wheel slippage on rail may cause some errors in the crane position information obtained from encoder pulse, and the infrared sensor is used to compensate for errors in the crane position information. The performance of proposed method is verified on experimental results with the simulator of yard crane, the size of which is about 1/10 with the real crane.

  • This paper is presented an simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) algorithm using ultrasonic for robot and electric compass, encoder, and gyro. Generally, localization based upon electric compass, encoder, and gyro can be measured just local position in workspace. However, actual robot must need an information of the absolute position in workspace to perform its mission, Absolute position in workspace could be calculated using SLAM algorithm. To implement SLAM in this paper, a map is built using ultrasonic sensor and hierarchical map building method. And then, we the map will be transformed into a feature map. The absolute position could be calculated using the feature map and map mapping method. As a test bed, we designed and construct an autonomous robot and showed the experimental performance of the proposed SLAM algorithm based on feature map. Experimental result, we verified that robot can found all absolute position on experiments using proposed SLAM algorithm.

  • A sensor modeling via artificial neural network is presented in this paper. The optical sensor has been designed to treasure absolute 3-dimensional positions and orientations of objects in 6-DOF. The method utilizes a triangular pyramidal mirror having an equilateral cross-sectional shape referred as 3-facet mirror. The mirror has three lateral reflective surfaces inclined 45 degrees to its bottom surface. The 3-facet mirror is mounted on the object whose 6-DOF motion is to be measured. As optical components, a He-Ne laser source and three position-sensitive detectors(PSD) are used. The laser beam is emitted from the He-Ne laser source located at the upright position and vertically incident o...
