  • Recently, as power and electronic devices have increased in frequency and capacity, it has become a major concern to protect electronic circuits and electronic components used in these devices from abnormal voltages such as various surges and pulse noise. To respond to variously rated voltages applied to power electronic devices, the rated voltages of various varistors can be obtained by controlling the size of internal particles of the varistor or controlling the number of layers of the varistor. During bonding, the problem of unbalanced thermal runaway occurring between the electrode and the varistor interface causes degradation of the varistor and shortens its life of the varistor. In this study, to solve the problem of unbalanced heat distribution of stacked varistors to adjust the operating voltage, the contents of the ZnO-based varistor composition were 96 wt% ZnO, 1 mol% Sb2O3, 1 mol% Bi2O3, 0.5 mol% CoO, 0.5 mol% MnO, and 1 mol% TiO2. A multi-layered ZnO varistor was modeled by bonding a single varistor with a composition in three layers according to the operating voltage. The thermal distribution of the triple-layered ZnO varistor was analyzed for the thermal runaway phenomenon that occurred during varistor operation using the finite element method according to Comsol 5.2.

  • In the power plant using high temperature fuel cells such as Molten Carbonate Fuel Cell(MCFC), and Solid Oxide Fuel Cell(SOFC), the generated electric power per area of power generation facilities is much higher than any other renewable energy sources. - High temperature fuel cell systems are capable of operating at MW rated power output. - It also has a feature that is short for length of the line for connecting the interior of the generation facilities. In normal condition, these points are advantages for voltage drops or power losses. However, in abnormal condition such as fault occurrence in electrical system, the fault currents are increased, because of the small impedance of the short length of power cable. Commonly, to minimize the thermal-mechanical stresses on the stack and increase the systems reliability, we divided the power plant configuration to several banks for parallel operation. However, when a fault occurs in the parallel operation system of power main transformer, the fault currents might exceed the interruption capacity of protective devices. In fact, although the internal voltage level of the fuel cell power plant is the voltage level of distribution systems, we should install the circuit breakers for transmission systems due to fault current. To resolve these problems, the SFCL has been studied as one of the noticeable devices. Therefore, we analyzed the effect of application of the SFCL on bus tie in a fuel cell power plants system using PSCAD/EMTDC.

  • This paper proposes the modeling of sensorless drive system using 120 degree conduction method for IPM (Interior Permanent Magnet) BLDC motors and analyzes characteristics of the terminal voltage that is used to detect the rotor position. This paper shows that the ZCP (Zero-Crossing Point) of the measured terminal voltage used In sensorless control is ahead of that of the back EMF of IPM motors because they have a saliency. This research also analyzes that the amount of position detection error is related to saliency, rotor speed, and load condition. In addition, this paper shows that motors have bigger advance angles than we have expected because the ZCP of terminal voltage precedes the actual ZCP, and under operation conditions such as heavy load and high speed it may generate abnormal currents that flow toward opposite direction after phase current becomes zero.

  • When the ground fault on the power side occurs on distribution system interconnected with distributed generations, the abnormal current is generated in the neutral conductor by the connection type and the iron core structure of transformers for the interconnection of distributed power supplies due to the unbalanced voltage of the system, and subsequently the false operation of the protective relay on the load side occurs. Herein, this paper proposes the method to correct errors in the phase current to prevent the false operation of the protective relay by applying p-q theory and presents the simulation result of the error correction algorithm using PSCAD/EMTDC.

  • This paper presents a new programmable compensation circuit (PCC) for a System-on-Chip (SoC). The PCC is integrated with $0.18-{\mu}m$ BiCMOS SiGe technology. It consists of RF Design-for-Testability (DFT) circuit, Resistor Array Bank (RAB) and digital signal processor (DSP). To verify performance of the PCC we built a 5-GHz low noise amplifier (LNA) with an on-chip RAB using the same technology. Proposed circuit helps it to provide DC output voltages, hence, making the RF system chain automatic. It automatically adjusts performance of an LNA with the processor in the SoC when it goes out of the normal range of operation. The PCC also compensates abnormal operation due to the unusual PVT (Process, Voltage and Thermal) variations in RF circuits.

  • In this paper, a device to analyze gait pattern was developed by using a 2-axis acceleration sensor attached to the foot. The 1st low-pass filter was adapted to limit the frequency band up to 5 Hz. An algorithm to detect the peak value exceeding the threshold voltage of an X-axis acceleration sensor and a Z-axis acceleration sensor was developed and normal and abnormal walking patterns were thus differentiated. Also, MCU and Bluetooth were combined to transfer the data to other MCUs to display on an LCD; the size of the device could then be reduced. The new algorithm and the device allowed the individual walking patterns to be easily measured at a low cost and with less restriction on activities compared to conventional multiple pressure sensors or motion camera system.

  • This paper is described an expert system which performs the network reconfiguration in order to operate distribution systems optimally using heuristic rules. The proposed network reconfiguration is able to not only eliminate abnormal states such as overload of transformers/lines and low voltage violation, but also achieve minimum power loss and optimum load balancing under normal states. In order to apply the network reconfiguration efficiently, an expert system is adopted a best-first tree searching strategy on the basis of heuristics, and is implemented in AI language Turbo PROLOG. Several examples are used to illustrate concepts described above.

  • This paper is focused on implementing a real-time data acquisition system that checks power facility status by applying network based technology to Urban Transit substation power facilities and the results of its on-field tests. This system is composed of a sensor part, a measurement part, a transceiver part, a host computer, and a power source part. The system is designed to collect, save, analyze, and display the online state power facility AI (Analog Input). This system measures voltage and current from positive feeders and negative feeders where it is possible to check abnormalities of the substation‘s main power facilities. By monitoring abnormal data of the Urban Transit power facilities real-time and analyzing stored data, establishing procedures of optimized maintenance is possible.

  • This paper presents the new detection method for the end of life on fluorescent lamps. At the end of lamp life, the lamp voltage and current asymmetrically increase and decrease more than normal state. If the ballast system does not have the protection function especially for T4 and T5 lamps, we may see the melting socket which is connected to the end of the lamp. To protect from this kind of abnormal status is the most important thing in the ballast system that has very old lamps.

  • Influence of electrochemical etching conditions on capacitance gain of aluminium electrolytic on capacitor foil has been investigated by etching cubic textured high purity aluminum foil in dilute hydrochloric acid. Uniformly distributed etch pit tunnels on aluminum surface have been obtained by pretreatment aluminium foil in 10% NaOH solution for 5 minutes followed by electrochemical etching. Electrostatic capacitance of etched aluminium foil anodized to high voltage increased with the increase of current density, total charge, temperature and concentration of electrolyte up to maximum CV-value and then deceased. Election optical observation of the etched foil revealed that the density of etch of etch pits increased with the increase of current density and concentration of electrolyte. this increase of etch pit density enlarged of the increase of capacitance. However, abnormal high current density and high electrolyte concentration induced the local dissolution of the foil surface which resulted the decrease of foil capacitance.
