자동차용 가솔린 기관의 정상연소 및 이상연소에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Normal Combustion and Abnormal Combustion in Automotive S.I.Engine (Knocking Phenomena in Quiscent or Swirl Flow Field))

  • In this study, a rapid compression and expansion machine(RCEM) equipped with a swirl generator was designed and developed, in order to clarify normal and abnormal combustion(knocking phenomena). This RCEM is intended to simulate combustion process in actual automotive S.I.engines, having a high reproducibility in the compression stroke. Flame propagation and autoignition processes associated with normal and abnormal combustion were captured by the high speed schlieren photography. And swirl intensity. equivalence ratio and ignition position were varied to investigate the effect of turbulence, concentration in the unburnt gas region and flame propagation length. The knock intensity, knock mass fraction and knock mass fraction after autoignition were calculated by use of history of measured cylinder pressure.

  • The unbalance of the power output, noise, and vibration is happened by the disproportionate pressure variation in the cylinder. For this reason, decrease of the pressure in the cylinder and increase of the residual gas effect on the engine performance. If the abnormal combustion is continued, the crack would be occurred in the engine block. And it could be broken down. For the normal combustion of the SI engine, it is important to supply the balanced mixture by each operating condition. In this study, it was tested the combustion characteristics in the cylinder according to the abnormal adjusting of intake & exhaust valve. This test is willing to set a basic data's analysis fur developing an automotive diagnosis system by analyzing the pressure in the cylinder, the output signal of MAP sensor, the exhaust gas, etc.

  • Gas Turbine combustors for power plant can be reduced NOx emissions using lean premixed combustion technology. But the combustors are likely to occur combustion oscillations which damage operation reliability and mechanical life of the gas turbines. In this paper, characterizations of oscillation in a gas turbine combustor for power plant are presented. Combustion dynamics occur $1{\sim}1.5$ psi in amplitude with low frequency less than 140Hz during normal operation. An abnormal high level dynamics, 2.0 psi amplitude occur at 125 Hz frequency. Abnormal combustion oscillation is reduced by modulation of fuel supply valve control schedule.

  • Internal combustion engine is the main source of environmental pollutants and therefore better technology is required to reduce harmful elements from the exhaust gases all over the world. Especially, harmful elements from the exhaust gases are caused by incomplete combustion of mixture inside the engine cylinder and this abnormal combustion like misfire or partial burning is the direct cause of the air pollution and engine performance degradation. the object of this research is to detect abnormal combustion like misfire and to keep the engine performance in the optimal operating state. Development of a new system therefore could be applied to a real car. To realize this, the spark-plug in a conventional ignition system is used as a misfire detection sensor and breakdown voltage is analyzed. In this research, bias voltage(about 3kV) was applied to the electrodes of spark-plug and breakdown voltage signal is obtained. This breakdown voltage signal is analyzed and found that a combustion phenomena in engine cylinder has close relationship with harmonic coefficient K which was introduced in this research. Newly developed combustion diagnostic method( breakdown voltage signal analysis) from this research can be used for the combustion diagnostic and combustion control system in an real car.

자동차용 모바일 폰 충전 케이블의 발화 안전성에 관한 연구 (A Study on safety against a fire of charging cable for mobile phone for vehicle)

  • This paper describes result of a study on safety against a fire of charging cable for mobile phone for vehicle. Combustion on the USB cable in the car was happened while driving. Gas coming from the burning USB cable could be a reason which can make a secondary car accident since the driver also can be embarrassed while driving. In order to prevent a secondary car accident connected on the road, to research a reason why USB cable can emit gas and be burned in charging. We did simulation test with abnormal fault condition for the electronic component on the board in the USB cable. So we get the result from abnormal fault condition simulation test, for instance, shorted test for output terminal of 8 pin switch, shorted test for chip resistor after thermal aging in the condition $25^{\circ}C$, 93 % RH during 48 hours. To analysis the result of all test, Combustion on the USB cable was not the 8 pin but other electrical component such as a chip resistor. Therefore we guess that the reason for USB cable combustion in charging in a car was not 8 pin and a LED but another defective component.

용광로 연소대 관리시스템 개발 (Development of combustion zone monitoring system for a blast furnace)

  • A prototype of combustion zone monitoring system as been developed and installed into tuyeres of the blast furnace. The system consists of CCD(charge coupled device) cameras, sonic flow meters, an image processor and a personal computer. The personal computer collects raceway luminance data and operational data from the image processor that is connected to the color CCD camera from the blast furnace process computer, respectively. In addition, the sonic flow meters supply coal injection rate data to the personal computer. Then, the personal computer evaluates the combustion conditions with the raceway inspection algorithm. This integrated monitoring system allows us to detect abnormal raceway conditions and the clogging status of coal injection pipe. The image processing techniques of the system enable us to effectively monitor unburnt coal sticking to tuyere tip and injection lance wear conditions. Such a developed system ensures rapid and precise raceway inspection. The image processing capability of the system has helped operator to early detect both the unburnt coal sticking problem and the errosion problem of injection lance. Furthermore, the system could control the abnormal raceway condition based the the analysis results obtained from combustion monitoring.

  • The abnormal combustion in the running engine results to knocking which increases the pressure and temperature in the cylinder, thereby decreasing the generated power by reducing the thermal efficiency. When the temperature and pressure in the cylinder increased rapidly by knocking, abnormal combustion takes place and the engine power is decreased. To investigate the knocking phenomenon, accelerometers are installed in the cylinder head to monitor and diagnose the vibration signal. As method of signal analysis, the time-frequency analysis method was adapted for acquisition of vibration signal and analyzes engine combustion in the short time. In this experiment, after analyzing time data which is stored in the signal recorder in one unit work (4 strokes: 2 revolutions), the signal with frequency and Wavelet methods with extracted one engine combustion data was also analyzed. Then, normal condition with no knocking signal is analyzed at this time. Hereafter, the experiments made a standard for distinguishing normal and abnormal condition to be carried out in acquisition of vibration signal at all cylinders and extracting knocking signal. In addition, analyzing methods can be diverse with Symmetry Dot Patterns (SDP), Time Synchronous Average (TSA), Wigner-Ville Distribution (WVD), Wigner-Ville Spectrum (WVS) and Mean Instantaneous Power (MIP) in the cold test [2]. With signal processing of vibration from engine knocking sensor, the authors adapted a part of engine /rotor vibration analysis and monitoring system for marine vessels to prevent several problems due to engine knocking

  • The free-piston hydrogen fueled engine is estimated as the next generation power system which can obtain high efficiency and low emission, simultaneously. In order to develop the free-piston hydrogen fueled engine, it is necessary to stable the combustion. The engine combustion, backfire and knock phenomenons were studied by using RICEM for researching combustion characteristics of free-piston engine. As the results, backfire occurrence was not observed in the free-piston engine under limited experimental condition. And knocking occurred in case of higher cylinder wall temperature.

  • Knock in SI engines causes physical damage to the piston and combustion chamber and lowers the thermal efficiency. The increase in compression ratio which can improve the thermal efficiency and engine performance has been limited by engine knock. So the need of making clear the knocking phenomenon has increased. This paper reviews the methods of knock detection, characterization and prediction of knock with the reduced chemical kinetic modeling.

  • Continuously contacting with camshaft the face of Valve Lifter made of cast iron brings about abnormal wear such as unfairwear or earlywear because it is heavily loaded in the valve train systems as the engine gets more powered. This abnormal wear becomes a defet namely over-clearance when the valve is lifting so that the fuel gas imperfectly combusted by unsuitable open or close aaction of the engine valve in the combustion chamber. The imperfect combustion in the end results in the major cause of air pollution and combustion chamber. The imperfectly combusted by unsuitable open or close action of the engine valve in the combustion chamber. The imperfect combustion in the end results in the major causes of air pollution and decrease of the engine output. Consequently to prevent this wear this study was to develop the valve lifter which is joined by brazing process with SCM435H and a tip by manufacturing the face as a superhardened which is joined by brazing process with SCM435H and a tip by manufacturing the face as a superhardened ceramics alloy which has high wear resistance. Having the excellent surface hardness with Hv1100-1200 the sintered body developed with superhardened alloy(WC) can endure the severe face loading in the valve train system. We experienced with various brazing alloys and obtained the excellent joining strength to the joint had 150MPa shear strength. Interface analysis and microstructure in a joint were examined through SEM & EDS Optical microscope. Also 2,500 hours high speed(3,000-4,000 rpm) and continuous (1step 12hr) engine dynamo testing was carried out to casting valve liter and ceramics-metal joint valve lifter so that the abnormal wears were compared and evaluated.
