Effectiveness of Tobacco Education for Pharmacy Students in Indonesia

  • Background: Smoking remains the major preventable cause of death worldwide, especially cancer-related death. Evidence clearly indicates that tobacco-related morbidity and mortality is reduced by smoking cessation. Pharmacists are well-positioned to provide tobacco cessation services an involvement of pharmacists in smoking cessation is encouraged by several organizations. While Indonesia's prevalence of smoking is in the first rank in Asian countries, none of the pharmacy schools in Indonesia are currently offering tobacco-related courses in their existing curricula at present. Our study aimed to develop and to evaluate the effectiveness of tobacco education (TE) for pharmacy students in Indonesia. Materials and Methods: A 6-hour TE was developed and evaluated using pre-test/post-test with control group design. A total of 137 fifth-year pharmacy students at Gadjah Mada University (GMU), Yogyakarta, were chosen as an intervention group while a total of 105 fifth-year students of Islamic University of Indonesia, (UII) served as the control group. Knowledge, perceived-role, self-efficacy, and ability to perform counseling using the 5A's framework were evaluated. Results: A significant improvement (P < 0.001) in knowledge, perceived-role, and self-efficacy was found in the intervention group but not in the control group. In addition, we revealed that 89.7% of the intervention group were able to perform counseling using 5A's. Conclusions: The developed TE significantly improved student knowledge, perceived-rolse, self-efficacy, and created an ability to perform cessation counseling. Integration of TE education in curricula of Indonesian pharmacy schools nation-wide should be encouraged.

초등학생의 공간능력 수준차이에 따른 지구자전에 관한 개념 분석 (The Analysis of Concept on The Rotation of The Earth of Elementary Students According to Difference of Spatial Ability)

  • The purpose of this study is to find how elementary students who have different spatial ability affects their understandings on the concept of the rotation of the earth. In order to perform this study, four 5th grade students were picked out of 85 students in Seoul. They had the same conceptual achievement on the movement of celestial bodies but had different spatial abilities. The results of this study were as follows : Regardless of their spatial ability, they understand how day and night are performed, and understand the fact that diurnal motions of moon are related to the rotation of the earth. Also, the students who had higher spatial abilities showed better understanding on the concept of the rotation of the earth and understood the reconstructed concepts in stereoscopic space. But the students who had lower spatial abilities did not fully understand the concept of the rotation of the earth and just memorized them as fragmentary concepts. As for the gender differences, the boy students who had higher spatial ability explained the concept clearly and the others who had lower spatial ability had difficulty in understanding the rotation direction of the earth related with the diurnal movement of celestial bodies. In the same manner, the girl students who had higher spatial ability explained the concepts concretely and the others who had lower spatial ability had difficulty in explaining the concepts by operating them stereoscopically. Therefore, developing teaching methods and studying data and so on, for the girl students, they should be trained to operate the stereoscopic space directly, and for the boy students, they should learn to think over objects with multi-viewpoints. And then the spatial ability on the movement of celestial bodies would be expected to be improved.

초등학생을 위한 자유 탐구 프로그램 개발 및 적용: 학생의 과학 탐구 기능 특성 및 지속적 피드백을 중심으로 (Development and Application of Open Inquiry Program : Focusing on the Students' Traits of Science Inquiring Ability and Repeated Feedback)

  • The revised curriculum in 2007 adds an open inquiry approach to increase students' creativity and interest in science. Because it is the first time for elementary students to perform the open inquiry due to the national curriculum, it is essential that teachers give students' successful experiences in order to build a positive impression about inquiry activity. The purpose of this research is to develop and apply the open inquiry program. The research findings are as follows: First, we analyzed the students' traits of open inquiry ability during the program. The third and fourth grade students showed weakness in operating and inquiring abilities. They also feared failure and were unable to concentrate in classes which were based on explanation or discussion. When students had unexpected results, however, their inquiring abilities and creativeness increased considerably. Additionally there were some students who were stressed during the science-inquiry activity, due to no interest in science and an inability to think scientifically. Second, we developed an open inquiry program for elementary students. The program was modified, reflected upon the students' traits during open inquiry in class. Through repeated feedback like this, we completed the program. Third, for those who studied in the lessons there was a meaningful change in students' science inquiry abilities and abilities to perform 'formulating a hypothesis' and 'the control of variables'. These students' level of self-inquiry performance improved steadily. Moreover, they obtained a strong attachment to their inquiry and understood the method of quantitative experiments.

Effect of Home Activity Support Program on Daily Living Performance Skills in Children with Cerebral Palsy and their Parents

  • Objective: This study attempted to find out if it changes the child's ability to perform daily life activities when visiting the familiar environment and daily living space of children with cerebral palsy and conducting a home activity support program for children and parents. Design: Randomized Controlled Trial Methods: Among 22 children aged 3 to 12 years old, they were assigned to the intervention group and control group. Of these, 12 boys and 10 girls participated in the study. Gross motor function measure and upper extremity function evaluation were used to measure the physical function of children with cerebral palsy, and self-care skills, mobility and social functions were evaluated in the pediatric evaluation of disability inventory. In addition, a parenting sense of competence was used to find out the efficacy of parents in raising children. After the pre-evaluation, basic rehabilitation treatment and intervention programs were applied to the intervention group, and only basic rehabilitation treatment was performed to the control group, and post-evaluation was performed 8 weeks later. Results: As a result of the study, among the items that measured the gross motor function, upper limb function, and daily life performance ability of the intervention group in the difference between the intervention group and the control group, statistically improved in personal processing and movement (p<0.05). In addition, the parenting sense of competence children in the intervention group was statistically significant (p<0.05). Conclusions: The home activity support program will help strengthen the ability of cerebral palsy children to perform daily life as a way to set mutually agreed goals with their families or children and achieve them in a familiar environment.

원예치료가 치매노인의 일상생활 수행능력과 인지기능에 미치는 영향 (Effect of the Horticultural Therapy on Activities of Daily Living and Cognitive Function of Demented Old Adults)

  • 본 연구는 원예치료가 치매노인의 일상생활 수행능력과 인지기능에 미치는 영향에 대해서 알아보고자 실시하였다. 연구방법은 시설에서 요양 중인 치매노인을 대상으로 정서적인 안정과 손 기능은 물론 인지기능을 강화하여 일상생활 수행능력을 향상시키고자 다양한 원예활동을 실시하였다. 원예치료 실시 전과 후의 일상생활 수행능력의 변화를 평가한 결과 대조군은 9.71점에서 9.21점으로 시간이 지날수록 일상생활 수행능력이 감소되었으나 실험군은 원예치료 실시 전 10.86점에서 실시 후 12.43점으로 일상생활 수행능력이 유의하게(p=.009) 향상되었다. 그리고 인지기능의 변화를 평가한 결과 대조군은 10.57점에서 9.07점으로 인지기능이 떨어졌으나 실험군은 원예치료 실시 전 10.43점에서 실시 후 13.29점으로 인지기능이 유의하게(p=0.003) 향상되었다. 이와 같이 치매노인에게 식물을 매개체로 하는 다양한 원예활동은 치매노인의 일상생활 수행능력뿐만 아니라 인지기능 향상에 효과적이었다.

The Effects of Clam Exercise on the Trunk Control and Balance of Stroke Patients

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to verify the effect of applying clam exercise on improving trunk control and balance ability in stroke patients. Based on this, we tried to provide clinical information. Methods: In this study, 18 patients with chronic stroke were recruited from a rehabilitation hospital. The patients were divided into two groups: a clam exercise group (9 patients) and a control group (9 patients). After 30 minutes of neuro-development therapy, they performed clam exercise or bridge exercise for 3 weeks, 5 times a week for 30 minutes. A trunk impairment scale (TIS) and a postural assessment scale for stroke patients-trunk control (PASS-TC) were performed to evaluate the subjects' ability to control trunk before and after intervention. Balance ability was measured by Balancia before and after intervention. Results: After the training periods, area 95% COP and weight distribution of the affected side were significantly different from the clam exercise group compared to the control group (p<0.05). Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, in can be seen that the clam exercise is effective in improving the balance ability compared to the bridge exercise. Maintaining the standing posture requires muscle strength of the hip abduction and extension, which is the result of the clam exercise selectively strengthening these muscles. Therefore, if you want to provide intervention to improve the balance of stroke patients, it is recommended to perform a clam exercise.

딱따구리 과제에서 초등예비 교사들의 가설 평가 지식에 대한 분석을 통한 가설 평가 능력 지수 산출식의 개발 (Development of the Quotient Equation of the Hypothesis Evaluating Ability by Analysis of the Pre-service Elementary School Teachers' Knowledges for Evaluating Hypothesis on a Woodpecker Task)

  • The purpose of this study was to invent a quotient equation which could quantitatively evaluate individual's hypothesis evaluating ability. The equation was induced by the analysis of the classification types about hypothesis evaluation knowledges generated by 15 pre-service elementary school teachers and the construction of the quotient equation on hypothesis evaluating ability. The hypothesis evaluation task administered to subjects was dealt with the woodpecker behavior. The task was initiated by generating hypothesis on the following question: 'Why don't woodpecker have brain damage after pecking wood?' Subjects then were asked to design and perform experiments for testing hypothesis. Finally they were asked to evaluate their own hypothesis based on the collected, analyzed and interpreted data. The knowledges generated from their evaluating hypothesis were analyzed by 4 major categories (richness, type, level and accuracy). Then, a general equation which could quantitatively and systematically evaluate individual's hypothesis evaluating ability was invented by an inductive process. After combining all the categories the following quotient equation was proposed; '$VQ\;=\;{\sum}(TE_n\;{\times}\;AE_n)\;{\times}\;LE$'. According to this results, woodpecker task and hypothesis evaluating ability quotient equation (VQ) which invented in this study could be applied to a practical use of measuring students' ability of scientific hypothesis evaluation.

수학 성취 수준에 따른 고등학생들의 함수적 표현의 번역 능력 (The Translation Ability of Functional Expressions of High School Students according to the level of Mathematics)

  • 함수에서 한 표현 양식을 해석하여 다른 표현 양식으로 번역하는 과정은 함수적 사고 능력의 개발에 있어서 중요한 과정이며 함수의 지도에서 강조되어야 한다. 본 연구는 수학 수준별 함수의 번역 능력과 번역 과정에서 나타나는 오류를 파악하고 그 원인을 찾아 함수 교수 학습에 시사점을 제공하는 것에 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 고등학교 1학년을 대상으로 함수적 표현의 번역 능력을 검사하기 위한 과제를 수행하게 하고, 각 문항에 대하여 수준별로 정답률을 분석하고, 오류 유형과 그 원인을 분석하여 교정 방안을 모색하고자 한다.

전문대학에서 NCS 수리능력 수업의 효과성 분석 (Analysis of Effectiveness of NCS Mathematics Ability Course in Junior College)

  • 읍면지역의 전문대학 학생들은 공통적으로 수학의 기초학력 부족을 겪고 있다. 이러한 문제점으로 인해 전공의 기초지식이 부족하여 전공학습에 어려움을 겪게 된다. 그리고 학업에 흥미를 잃어 결국 휴학이나 자퇴를 하는 경우가 많거나 취업을 하여도 직장생활에 어려움이 있다. 이러한 문제점을 개선하고 해결하고자 국가에서는 국가직무능력표준(NCS)을 제안하고 있다. NCS에서 제안하는 직업기초능력은 직종이나 직위에 상관없이 대부분의 직종에서 직무를 성공적으로 수행하는데 필요한 능력이다. 이러한 직업기초능력 중 하나인 수리능력을 전문대학의 수학교육에 적용시키고자 한다. NCS 수리능력을 전문대학 학생들에게 적용하였을 경우, NCS 수리능력 수업의 효과성을 알아보고자 한다. 이를 통해 바람직한 전문대학 수리능력의 교육방향을 모색하고 수학의 기초학력 제고와 흥미를 유발하게 하는 데 그 목적이 있다.

과제 난이도에 따른 2, 4세 유아의 비상징적 연산능력 (An Investigation into 2, 4 Year Old Children's Nonsymbolic Arithmetic Ability According to Task Difficulty)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate young children's nonsymbolic arithmetic ability according to task difficulty. The participants in this study comprised 43 2-year-old children and 48 4-year-old children recruited from 5 childcare centers located in Seoul, Korea. All tasks were composed of comparison, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division tasks. In addition, each arithmetic task varied with the ratio of the two quantities; low level(1:2), middle level(2:3), high level(4:5). The results revealed that 2 & 4-year-old children could perform a large numerical range of nonsymbolic arithmetic tasks without influences from previously learned mathematics. This finding suggests that children have a degree of numerical capacity prior to symbolic mathematics instruction. Furthermore, children's performance on nonsymbolic arithmetic tasks indicated the ratio signature of large approximate numerical representation. This result implies that large approximate numerical representation can be used in arithmetical manipulations.
