  • The purposes of the study were to develop STEM instructional materials for teaching and learning mathematics and to investigate how the STEM based approach affects on students' learning of mathematics in cognitive and affective domain and career choice. STEM instructional materials were designed for learning of mathematical concepts in the contexts of science, technology, and engineering as well as real world. According to the results of the study, STEM instructional materials for teaching and learning mathematics were effective for improving students' problem solving ability and affective achievement such as self-regulation, self-efficacy, and value of mathematics. In addition, STEM program played a positive role in tempting students' career choice into science and engineering fields including mathematics.

  • The purpose of this research was to investigate the descriptive evaluation method that focuses on the problem solving process of the student. The goal was to evaluate the students' understanding of the subject rather than the students' ability to find the final answer. The descriptive evaluation is being suggested as a way of examining the thought process of the student by performing a structured analysis of the problem solving process. Today, there are not enough descriptive evaluation resources available for teachers to effectively carry out this alternative assessment method in the elementary school mathematics curriculum. This research is a case study on the development of resources for descriptive evaluation in grade 4 mathematics. We designed the development process for descriptive evaluation and its rubric for all 8 units of the 4-Na level of mathematics in the elementary school curriculum. Three descriptive problems were developed for each of the 8 units for a total of 24 problems. The rubric consisted of three areas of assessment, 1) understanding of the problem, 2) problem solving, and 3) mathematical communication. The problems were first pilot tested in two 4th grade classes. Modified problems were then tested in a different 4th grade classroom. The study showed that the three defined areas of evaluation framework (problem understanding, problem solving and mathematical communication) were measurable and analyzable using the developed grading rubric. We then conclude that he descriptive evaluation could be used as an effective tool for improving teacher performance in elementary school mathematics.

  • It is the purpose of this study that is to examine the practice and awareness on the use of calculator and to find the method to utilize the calculator as the tool in elementary school mathematics. Recently, it is recommendes strongly to use technical tools such as calculator and computer for the quiltative development on mathematics education. But we prohibite the usage of calculator and do not have the policy to use the calculator in our country because we have little understanding about it. The following direction for educational development is focused not on the repeat learning through the written computation, but on the ability for students to choose an operator and to perform the task with their own objects and strategies. By using the calculator, We can do the followings : 1)to help the mathematical concept develop, 2)to expand the computational ability from written computation to both mental computation and computational estimation, 3)to use the practical value in the problem situation, 4)to reinforce the problem solving, 5)to obtain the interest and the confedence on mathematics. Therefore, we must endevor actively for the broad usage of calculator in the mathematics class.

  • Development and evaluation of distance learning for the gifted students in science and mathematics In this study, we developed and administrated the distance learning for the gifted students in science and mathematics, and analysed their responses. To do this, four types of teaching programs - lectures using program for distance learning, practice activities using simulation program, tasks solving programs based on discussions, and problem solving activities - were developed and students responses were analysed in eight area - stimulus, difficulties, structure, learning circumstances, involvement, interaction, learning outcomes, comparison with other learning -. As results, it was found that many students responded positively and thought programs helped their creativity, logical thinking, intelligent ability, and information searching ability. Students preferred practice activities based on appropriate guidances to lectures providing detailed explanations. And interaction could be stimulated by inducing discussion.

  • Two inertial extragradient-type algorithms are introduced for solving convex pseudomonotone variational inequalities with fixed point problems, where the associated mapping for the fixed point is a 𝜌-demicontractive mapping. The algorithm employs variable step sizes that are updated at each iteration, based on certain previous iterates. One notable advantage of these algorithms is their ability to operate without prior knowledge of Lipschitz-type constants and without necessitating any line search procedures. The iterative sequence constructed demonstrates strong convergence to the common solution of the variational inequality and fixed point problem under standard assumptions. In-depth numerical applications are conducted to illustrate theoretical findings and to compare the proposed algorithms with existing approaches.

  • This study investigated various effects of WBD(web-based discussion) on mathematical communication, interaction and problem solving in the classroom. We developed a web site including BBS and chat room in order to encourage students' mathematical curiosities and self-studies. The web site had been operated for 6 months. Five classes of 1st grade students were selected from an middle school in Daejon. Moreover, we analyzed several cases for interactional behavior and effect. WBD promote dialogue between a teacher and students. Analysis of feed-back from BBS revealed that student's negative attitudes could be changed to positive ones by step-by-step discussions. Moreover, collaborative learning is enhanced by on-line discussion. But the effects of WBD are affected by the character and ability of a student.

  • This study is based on the grade 3 National Diagnostic Assessment of Basic Competency(NDABC) in 2005. The purpose of this study is to analyze the results of NDABC by students' gender. It was 19,257 grade 3 students that participated in this study. The average scores are 89.41 and 88.34 for each male and female. The percentage of Below-Basic level for male students is 4.6% and for female 5.6%. The percentage of female students at Below-Basic level is increasing for 3 years. In particular, the percentage of females at Below-Basic level is higher than that of males in the content of measurement, the cognitive domain of reasoning and problem solving, and the situation of real life. The item difficulty for males is lower in fraction, polygon, and right triangle than for females. But female students need to improve the space sense and the problem solving ability in real life. As for the background of students, males think that mathematics is exciting and not difficult in comparison with what females think. And parents of mates are more concerned about children's learning than those of females.

  • This study aimed to examine what effects the lessons based on some mathematical tools have on the students' interest and problem solving ability. For this study, 2 classes of 5th graders who go to an elementary school were chosen and divided into an applied class and a comparative class. The applied class were taught through the lesson plans based on the mathematical tools and reorganized worksheets, and the comparative class were taught through the regular lesson plans based on the text. After conducting the lessons, examinations were implemented to check out the students' interest level and problem solving ability in the procedure of before-exam, during-exam, and after-exam.

  • The future society will demand that enables one to solve in many fields by connecting various informations in many fields and then creating his own information. In the coming society, creativeness will be regarded much important. This ability can be developed with materials through group activities experimental class in math classes. This classes using these materials are not teacher-oriented, explanatory classes but student-oriented ones. They offer students opportunities to think by themselves and expand their potential abilities. They are suitable for rising and keeping student's interests. Therefore experimental classes through group activities enable students to think mathematically and make them recognize the importance of mathematical approach by letting them work connecting other subjects or things in real life. They can develop not only expressive, communicative ability and cooperative spirit, but also the ability to transcend the class itself and then reorganize facts in new insights. Besides, math classes with experiments can arouse student's curiosity familiarizing them with mathematics. Moreover, they can expand student's originative and problem-solving abilities.

  • Though science and technology are evolving rapidly in recent years, the traditional science education has limits for students to be satisfied their interests and needs because they couldn't follow these speeds. STEAM as a education integrating science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics has strengths of increasing interests and understandings in science and technology and improving integrated thinking and problem solving ability for leaners. In this study we analyze the elementary school curriculum and construct physics learning based on STEAM and develop a android application to increase interests in science and improve problem solving ability. In the future, we need to analyze and develop the curriculum and contents for the STEAM education.
