Fish pathogens cause not only economic damages to fish farming but also infectious pathogens known as a zoonotic agent. Since the continued use of antibiotics to control fish pathogens entails side effects, materials of natural origin need to be developed. The purpose of this study is to discover coniferous essential oils with excellent antibacterial effects in order to develop antibiotic alternatives. We have extracted essential oils using hydro-distillation from the leaves of Abies holophylla, Pinus thunbergii, Pinus parviflora, Tsuga sieboldii, and Pinus rigitaeda, which are all Pinaceae family. And, we have evaluated antibacterial activity with the extracted essential oils against Edwardsiella tarda, Photobacterium damselae, Streptococcus parauberis, and Lactococcus garvieae, which are fish pathogens. As a result, the essential oils from A. holophylla and P. thunbergii showed the selectively strong antibacterial activity against E. tarda and P. damselae, which are gram-negative bacteria. From GC-MS analysis, it was identified that main component of A. holophylla essential oils are (-)-bornyl acetate (29.45%), D-limonene (20.47%), and camphene (11.73%), and that of P. thunbergii essential oils is α-pinene (59.81%). In addition, we found three compounds: neryl acetate, (-)-borneol, and (-)-carveol, which are oxygenated monoterpenes. These exist in a very small amount but exhibit the same efficacy as essential oil. Therefore, we expect that A. holophylla and P. thunbergii essential oils having excellent growth inhibitory effect against gram-negative fish pathogens can be used as biological products such as feed additives and fishery products.
This research was conducted to evaluate the effect of forest management practices on pH and electrical conductivity to get fundamental information on water purification capacity after forest operation. Rainfall, throughfall and stemflow were sampled at the study sites which consist of Abies holophylla and Pinus koraiensis in Gwangreung Experimental Forest for S months from May to November 1999. Mean pH of the throughfall of the beginning of the event was higher in management (thinning and pruning) sites of Abies holophylla and Pinus koraiensis stands than nonmanagement site of Abies holophylla and Pinus koraiensis stands. In addition, pH of the throughfall of the total amount of the event showed similar trends which are higher pH in the management sites compared with the non- management sites. This result indicates that managements such as thinning and pruning improve tree butler capacity of rainfall pH. According to the linear regression results, pH of the throughfall of the total amount of the event in non-management sites = 0.735${\times}$pH of the throughfall of the beginning of the event in non-management sites+1.849 ($R^2\;=\;0.82$) and pH of the throughfall of the total amount of the event in management sites= 0.863${\times}$pH of the throughfall of the beginning of the event in management sites +1.0242 ($R^2\;=\;0.87$). In case of stemflow pH, pH of the sternflow of the total amount of the event in non-management sites = 0.53${\times}$pH of the stemflow of the beginning of the event in non- management sites+2.7709 ($R^2\;=\;0.64$) and pH of the stemflow of the total amount of the event in management sites = 0.5854${\times}$pH of the stemflow of the beginning of the event in management sites+2.7045 ($R^2\;=\;0.65$). Electrical conductivity (EC) of the throughfall of the beginning and total amount of the event was highest in non- management site in Abies holophylla, followed by management sites in fsies Abies holophylla, non-management site in Pinus koraiensis, and management sites in Pinus koraiensis stands, respectively. According to the linear regression results, EC of the throughfall of the total amount of the event in non-managementsites = 0.4045${\times}$EC of the throughfall of the beginning of the event in non-management sites+26.766 ($R^2\;=\;0.69$) and EC of the throughfall of the total amount of the event in management sites = 0.6002${\times}$EC of the throughfall of the beginning of the event in management sites+8.0184 ($R^2\;=\;0.54$). In case of stemflow EC, EC of thestemflow of the total amount of the event in non-management sites = 0.6298${\times}$EC of the stemflow of the beginning of the event in non-management sites+11.582 ($R^2\;=\;0.72$) and pH of the stemflow of the total amount of the event in management sites =0.602${\times}$pH of the stemflow of the beginning of the event in management sites+20.783($R^2\;=\;0.49$).
The antifungal activities of the essential oils from Pinus densiflora, Pinus koraiensis, Abies holophylla, Larix kaempferi, Cryptomeria japonica and Chamaecyparis obtusa against Aspergillus fumigatus were evaluated. Essential oils were extracted from each conifer leaves for 8 h using water distillation method. The essential oil from A. holophylla appeared the strongest antifungal activity among the six oils with MIC value 0.125 mg/$m{\ell}$. The composition of the A. holophylla oil was analysed by GC/MS and then MIC was determined for main constituents of the oil. As the results, borneol and ${\alpha}$-bisabolol, which have a hydroxyl group, showed effective antifungal activities against A. fumigatus (0.25 mg/$m{\ell}$). In addition, the synergistic antifungal effects were observed in the combination of borneol and ${\alpha}$-bisabolol.
Mass loss and dynamics of mineral nutrient during decomposition of deciduous leaves and 3 species of needles were investigated for 38 months from October in 1992 to November in 1995 in Kwangneung, Korea. After 38 months, the remaining mass of deciduous leaves, Pinus koraiensis, Pinus rigida and Abies holophylla was 16.2%, 29.8%, 33.5% and 53.9%, respectively. The decay rate (k) of deciduous leaves, Pinus koraiensis, Pinus rigida and Abies holophylla was 0.61, 0.40, 0.37, $0.21yr^{-1}$, respectively. The lowest decay rate in fir needle might be, in part, due to low N concentration. N concentration of the decomposing litter increased during the experimental period except for P. rigida. Deciduous leaves showed a short immobilization period during the early stage of decomposition, and big-cone pine and pitch pine had no immobilization period. However, there was no net N mineralization in fir litter. P increased during the experimental period for all litter. Except for deciduous leaves, there was no net mineralization period. In case of deciduous leaves, however, remaining P after 38 months was 53% of the initial P capital. Remaining cations of the decomposing litter after 38 months were lower than those of initial contents.

This study was conducted to establish vegetation structure characteristics and vegetation management plan of the cultural landscape forests located around Unmun Temple in Cheongdo-gun and to provide the basic data needed to manage the cultural landscape forests. The landscape characteristics are analyzed in two perspectives including the landscape as viewed from inside and outside of Unmun Temple and eight landscape views are selected. Main views are Pinus densiflora forest and Abies holophylla forest around Unmun Temple. As a result of the survey of existing vegetation around Cheongdo-gun Unmun Temple, P. densiflora forests and P. densiflora-A. holophylla forests are widely distributed, occupying 79.2% of the forest. The plant community structure was classified into seven types according to the three topographic characteristics, flat forests, slope forests, and lower forests, Which were divided into a total of 30 survey plots and the average relative importance percentage was determined. The P. densiflora community on the flat are dominated by Carpinus tschonoskii in Under-canopy. The P. densiflora-A. holophylla community on the flat had a relatively high rate of domination in the shrubs. There were no competing species for the A. holophylla community on the plat. The large standard P. densiflora and the small standard P. densiflora were expected to be confined by P. serrulata var. pubescens and the Quercus variabilis on the slopes. The managed P. densiflora community had a relatively high rate of P. densiflora domination in the shrubs. The P. densiflora community on the lowland was dominated by Styrax japonicus and P. serrulata var. pubescens. The Shannon species diversity index was 0.2360 to 1.4088. The results of the correlation analysis with P. densiflora, A. holophylla and other species were P. densiflora had negative correlation with Acer mono, Corylus heterophylla var. heterophylla, Zelkova serrata and A. holophylla, and A. holophylla have negative correlation with S. japonicus and P. densiflora. Landscape characteristics and plant community structures are analyzed to propose management methods of maintaining and restoring The P. densiflora and A. holophylla cultural forest landscapes around Unmun Temple.

This study was carried out to the structure of plant community from Sinseongam to Jungdaesa in Odaesan National Park, furthermore, it seeks to curate the basic data for planning of the Abies holophylla's forest management in Odaesan National Park. In order to identify the current ecological environment, this study explored the actual vegetation as primary research and set to twenty plots(i.e. $400m^2$) for analysing detailed structure of plant communities. The research methodology was qualitative analysis, therefore it used TWINSPAN and DCA analysis tools. Especially, TWINSPAN performed well in several comparisons of classification techniques, DCA is one of the ordination technique showed that the plant communities. The plant community was analysed classification and ordination by TWINSPAN and DCA, moreover it was analysed the structure of plant community such as importance percentage of woody species, DBH class distribution, the index of diversity and rate of sample tree growth. The main vegetation was A. holophylla-Quercus mongolica forest and Deciduous broad-leaved forest in the communities where located in low altitude and valley, whereas main vegetation where located in high altitude and slope was Q. mongolica forest. The research site's plant communities were classified four groups. In all of communities, A. holophylla was dominant species in main canopy layer, furthermore, the three communities (community I, II, III) are growing up next generation of A. holophylla excluding community IV. The communities (community I, II, III) can be sustained current status which dominates the A. holophylla communities, simultaneously, there might be expanded the Deciduous broad-leaved communities by Carpinus cordata, Betula schmidtii and so on. While, it showed that the community IV tended to be weaken the forces of A. holophylla, therefore the community IV can be transferred to C. cordata-Deciduous broad-leaved communities in the future. The age of sample trees was 79~128(i.e. A. holophylla), 75~87(i.e. Pinus koraiensis) and 190 years(i.e. Ulmus davidiana var. japonica). The index of Shannon's Species diversity (H') were ranged from 0.3889 to 1.3332 in the communities.
The purpose of the this study was to compare the torlent tree to drought among the Pinus koraiensis, Abies holophylla, and Ginkgo biloba. The water relations parameters of leafy shoots were measured by the Pressure chamber technique from August 10 to September 4 in 1980. On the water relations parameters such as original osmotic pressure(${\pi}_0$), osmotic pressure(${\pi}_p$) and relative water content (RWC) at incipient plasmolysis, and Vp/Vo ratio of the volume of osmotic water (Vp) at incipient plasmolysis to total symplasmic water (Vo) basis, the Abies holophylla shoots showed ontogenetically a superior osmoregulation which are closely associated with drought resistance compared with Pinus koraiensis, and the Ginkgo biloba shoots showed the heighest among these three species.
