Abies holophylla Maxim. is a shade tolerant species that has potential to be used for continuous cover forestry system. Stand structure and natural regeneration of A. holophylla stands in Yong-In area located in the central part of Korea was investigated to estimate the self sustainability of A. holophylla plantation. Species composition, diameter at breast height (DBH) and height distribution of trees larger than 2 cm DBH were measured in ten stands in three study sites of Jeongsu-ri, Daedae-ri, and Hodong. Species and coverage of shrub layer, and A. holophylla seedlings were also investigated. While A. holophylla in non-managed stands (Jengsuri and Daedae-ri study sites) had the importance value of 40% and showed continuous diameter and age distribution, A. holophylla in Hodong site had narrow bell-shaped DBH distribution mostly concentrating between 25-35 cm DBH classes, and single canopy structure. Abies holophylla stands in Hodong have experienced occasional thinning and selective cutting. The correlation coefficient between age-DBH was significant but low ($R^2$=0.2, P=0.03), and similar aged A. holophylla had diverse DBH values. Continuos DBH distribution and multi-canopy structure of A. holophylla stands in Jeongsu-ri site show that natural regeneration of A. holophylla has been continuously occurred in this area. Seedling density of A. holophylla was between 2000 and 33000/ha, however, the number of trees in 2-5 cm DBH class was only 40-150 trees/ha, implying that the survival rate of seedlings is not high. Continuous natural regeneration and 0.6 cm/year of diameter growth rate of A. holophylla indicate that this area could be an appropriate habitat for this species, and A. holophylla plantation in this region seem to persist suggesting the possibility of managing the stands for continuous cover forestry system as well as selective harvesting practices.
This study was to diagnose the ontogenetic ability of drought tolerance in trees, and was to investigate the seasonal changes in tissue-water relations parameters, ${\pi}_o$, ${\pi}_p$, $E_{max}$, $N_s/DW$, $V_o/W_s$ and $RWC_{(tlp)}$, obtained from P-V curves on the Pinus koraiensis and Abies holophylla shoots. The results obtained are as follows; 1) Seasonal changes of original osmotic pressure at maximum turgot, ${\pi}_o$, were -1.2 to -1.6 MPa in Pinus koraiensis and -1.4 to -1.7 MPa in Abies holophylla. 2) Seasonal changes of osmotic pressure at incipient plasmolysis, ${\pi}_p$, were -1.8 to -2.1 MPa in Pinus koraiensis and -1.6 to -2.1 MPa in Abies holophylla. 3) Seasonal changes of relative water content at incipient plasmolysis, $RWC_{(tlp)}$, were 70 to 77% in Pinus koraiensis and 69 to 85% in Abies holophylla. 4) Seasonal changes of maximum bulk modulus of elasticity at maximum hydration, $E_{max}$, were 2.2 to 6.3 MPa in Pinus koraiensis and 3.1 to 7.9 MPa in Abies holophylla. 5) Seasonal changes of number of osmoles of solute in symplasm versus dry weight, $N_s/DW$, were 0.5 to 1.3 in Pinus koraiensis and 0.3 to 1.0 in Abies holophylla. 6) Seasonal changes of original osmotic water volume versus total water volume (symplasmic and apoplastic water), $V_o/W_s$, were 55 to 65%r in Pinus koraiensis and 40 to 65% in Abies holophylla. Consequently, as the comparative values of ${\pi}_o$, ${\pi}_p$, $E_{max}$, $N_s/DW$, $V_o/W_s$, and $RWC_{(tlp)}$, it might be suggested that Abies holophylla shoot could have more or less a greater ability of drought tolerance as compared with Pinus koraiensis shoot.
It was found that seed germination and seedling growth of selected species were inhibited by phytotoxic substance released from fir trees. The aqueous extracts of leaves caused significant inhibition in the seed germination of the receptor plants, Whereas seed germination of some species was not inhibited in extracts of leaves, but seedling elongation of the receptor plants was also decreased by the aqueous extract. Dry weight growth was slightly increased in lower concentration of the extract, while that was proportionally inhibited by higher concentration of the extracts. Chemical substances of fir trees were shown the biological toxicity. The GC method was employed for analysis of phytotoxic chemicals and sixteen chemical substances were identified such as benzoic, phenylacetic, etc. Also 33 volatile substances were identified from the fir tree. These chemical compounds are assumed the substances related to allelopathic potential of Abies holophylla plant species.
Some morphological and anatomical characteristics of four Abies species in Korea were investigated to find the characteristics and the taxonomical relationship between the species. The results were summarized as follows: There was no significant difference in needle thickness and number of hypodermic cell layer among 18 morphological and anatomical characteristics of cone and needle between the species. A. koreana and A. nephrolepis were similar in above fourteen characters and A. holophylla and A. firma were also similar in the 14 characters. A. koreana and A. firma showed similarity in above two characters. Main resin canals of needles in A. koreana and A. nephrolepis were situated in leaf margin (L-LM), those of A. holophylla, in L, L-M and M, and that of A. firma fully in other locations except L.

This study was conducted to compare seasonal changes of height, diameter at root collar, biomass and chlorophyll contents of Abies holophylla seedlings grown in Sangju National University Nursery under different light intensities. Four light intensities were adopted using nylon net such as 100% sunlight(1800 $\mu$㏖ m$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ ), 75% of sunlight (1350 $\mu$㏖ m$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ ), 50% of sunlight (900 $\mu$㏖ m$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ ) and 25% of sunlight (450 $\mu$㏖ m$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ ). Planting density in four light intensities was 30 cm$\times$30 cm. In each treatment, 100 trees were planted and height, diameter at root collar, biomass and chlorophyll contents were measured. The highest height, diameter at root collar and biomass in Abies holophylla seedlings were observed at 100% full sunlight. Lowest chlorophyll contents (Chlorophyll a, b and total) were shown at 25% of sunlight, lowest light intensity treatment in this study. Growths and chlorophyll contents of Abies holophylla seedlings were strongly associated with light intensity. Photosynthesis has to be investigated in near future because photosynthesis and chlorophyll contents were strongly related to tree growth with long periods.

A large part of Gapyeong is occupied by Korean pine (Pinus koraiensis) and Japanese larch (Larix kaempferi) plantations. Abies holophylla stands are scattered throughout Gapyeong, but little information on their distribution is available. This study explored the potential of succession from planted species to native A. holophylla in plantations. Trees were inventoried and regeneration of A. holoplhylla and stand management history were examined in Korean pine, Japanese larch, and A. holophylla-dominated stands. The importance percentage of A. holophylla was the highest among species with a range of 36.1% to 79.1% in all stands and the density of A. holophylla in understory (DBH <2 cm or <1.3 m height) ranged from 50 to 5,820 trees ha-1. Non-metric multidimensional scaling classified stands into four types, AN, AP, AM, and P. The AN type showed a reverse J-shape DBH distribution, which was similar to that in natural A. holophylla stands. Both AP and AM types included Korean pine plantations with A. holophylla seed trees within stands. For AP, A. holophylla competed with planted species in overstory and deciduous broadleaved species in understory. The AM type was once thinned from below, thus stem density in the mid DBH classes was lower than upper or lower DBH classes. The P type consisted of plantations without A. holophylla seed trees. However, understory regeneration of A. holophylla was abundant through seed supply from A. holophylla in adjacent stands. Plantations with A. holophylla seed trees within or in adjacent stands showed vigorous natural regeneration of A. holophylla, highlighting the potential for succession from planted species to native A. holophylla in the Gapyeong area. Further studies can help develop techniques to restore plantations to native species-dominated natural stands using ecological succession.
We extracted essential oils from four species (Pinus densiflora, Larix kaempferi, Pinus koraiensis, and Abies holophylla) in the family Pinaceae to investigate their antibacterial activities against respiratory tract bacteria (Klebsiella pneumoniae, Haemophillus influenzae, Streptococcus pyogenes, Streptococcus pneumonia, and Neisseria meningitides). Among the tested oils, that from A. holophylla was showed strong activity based on disc diffusion and broth medium dilution (minimum inhibitory concentration, MIC) assays. Qualitative analysis of A. holophylla oil was carried out by GC-MS; ${\alpha}$-pinene, camphene, ${\beta}$-pinene, 3-carene, limonene, bornyl acetate, borneol, ${\beta}$-caryophyllene, ${\alpha}$-caryophyllene, caryophyllene oxide, and ${\alpha}$-bisabolol were identified as its major constituents. Fractionation by silica gel chromatography was performed to analyze the active constituents of the crude oil. In particular, one fraction containing caryophyllene oxide as the major constituent showed stronger antibacterial activity than the crude oil of A. holophylla. Growth rates of bacterial strains exposed to fraction D were explored by optical density (OD600) measurements while morphology was examined by optical microscopy observations ( ${\times}1000$). OD600 of K. pneumoniae decreased from 0.2582 to 0.005 in response to treatment with fraction D at a MIC value of $0.31{\mu}{\ell}/m{\ell}$.

Background: The extract of Abies holophylla is used as an ingredient in cosmetics. This study assessed the antioxidant and antibacterial activities of the material remaining after the extract is used. Methods and Results: The 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2-azinobis (3-ethyl benzothiazoline)-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS) radical scavenging abilities were assessed to determined the free radical scavenging activity. The total phenol and flavonoid contents were determined to measure the antioxidant activity. The DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities of the resudual extract were higher (95.61 - 99.42% and 74.26 - 77.98% in water extract respectively) than those of the positive control. In 50% EtOH extract, the total phenol content was $389.84mg{\cdot}GAE/m{\ell}$, and the total flavonoid was $0.15mg{\cdot}QE/m{\ell}$. The minimum inhibition concentration degree for antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus was < 8 to < $125{\mu}g/m{\ell}$ compared to that of the positive control in all extracts. The clear zone against S. aureus was found to be $12.2{\pm}3.8mm$. Conclusions: The A. holophylla byproducts were found to have antioxidant and antibacterial activities. Therefore, the materials remaining after the A. holophylla extract is used in cosmetics has potential functional uses.
For the maximun yield of the forest trees in the forest management, the growth of annual ring area of the major forest trees was analysed in the four areas in South Korea. The time to the maximum productivity and the optimum cutting time for the maximum yield were estimated. The growth curve of annual ring area showed sigmoid like that of other organisms. Only the growth coefficient among the areas between Fraxinus rhynchophylla and Pinus koraiensis represented significance (5% level). The growth coefficient among forest trees between Pinus densiflora and Abies holophylla, Larix kaempferi and Carpinus laxiflora, Larix kaempferi and Quercus mongolica, Larix kaempferi and Quercus serrata, Larix kaempferi and Pinus koraiensis, and Larix kaempferi and Abies holophylla represented significance (5% level). Among eight forest trees, the time to maximum productivity (tm) of Larix kaempferi was the earliest (21.4 year), and Abies holophylla was the latest (91.9 year). The optimum cutting time for the maximum yield (tc) of L. kaempferi was the earliest (29.4 year) and that of A, holophylla was the latest (122.2 year) of all communities. The optimum cutting time for the maximum yield was 1.33 times as late as the time to the maximum productivity. If the growth of annual ring area as the forest tree for wood is regarded, L. kaempferi and P. densiflora are thought to be more economical than A. holophylla and P. koraiensis.

This study aims to clarify the effect of forest management practices(thinning and pruning) on water quality to get the fundamental information on the facility of cleansing water quality after forest operation. Rainfall, throughfall and stemflow were sampled at the study sites which consist of Abies holophylla and Pinus koraiensis in Kwangnung Experimental Forest for 6 months from May 4, to November 1, 1999. Average tree height in the management sites increased by 0.5m more than that in the non-management sites in Abies holophylla and Pinus koraiensis, respectively. Increment of average D.B.H. at the management sites grew 3.5cm and 2.6cm more in Abies holophylla and Pinus koraiensis compared with that at non-management sites. Average pH of the total amount for the event in throughfall and stemflow was higher than that of throughfall and stemflow of the beginning of the event at the management and non-management sites. Average electrical conductivity of throughfall and stemflow at the beginning of the event was higher than that of the total amount for the event at management and non-management sites. Water qualities of throughfall and stemflow were buffered more by the management practice in both. The forest management may affect purification of water quality of throughfall and stemflow in Abies holophylla and Pinus koraiensis.
