Titanium or titanium alloy is a widely used implant material according to its certified biocompatibility, sufficient strength and ready availability. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relative biocompatibility of titanium and titanium alloy specimens (Ti-29Nb-13Ta, TiNb and Ti-6Al-4V, Ti64) using in vivo and in vitro methods. For in vivo experiment, the specimens were implanted in the abdominal subcutaneous region of female mice for 2 and 4 weeks. The reaction of connective tissue to specimens was evaluated histologically. The specimens were encapsulated by fibrous connective tissue consisting of fibroblast, fibrocyte and other cells including neutrophil, macrophage, giant multinucleated cell and unidentified cells. Some newly formed blood vessels were located in the fibrous capsule surrounding the implant. Cell types and the thickness of fibrous capsules were examined quantitatively. Most of cell types located in the fibrous capsule were fibroblasts and fibrocytes. The average thickness of fibrous capsules for the TiNb specimens was much thinner than that of the titanium alloy, Ti64. The thickness of the fibrous capsule around all titanium specimens decreased at 4 weeks compared to 2 weeks post-implantation. The biocompatibility of titanium and titanium alloy specimens were also investigated in in vitro method using alkaline phosphatase from MG-63 cells. Alkaline phosphatase activity of the TiNb specimen showed higher activity than the titanium alloy, Ti64. In conclusion, the TiNb alloy with thin capsule thickness in vivo and high alkaline phosphatase activity in vitro will be of considerable use in biomedical applications.
Congenital anomalies occur at low levels in Korean antive cattle. PCR and Serum neutrlizing test against BVD, Akabane virus, Ibaraki virus, Kasba virus were examined. The results were all negative. Gross anatomical analysis was carried aout. Congenital abnormal newborn calf had 2 atropic left hindlimbs, which was nor moved autonomosly. The length of 2 atropic hindlimbs was 72 em and 48cm respectively. Both of them were curved severely at joints. Affected limbs were developed in connective tissue but lack of muscular tissue. In the abdominal region right kidney was normal. But there were two left kidneys which was half size compared with normal kidney. One of them had polycysts. In skeletal region, affected left limb is defective of head of femur and tibia.

Supernumerary ectopic limb(s) (SEL) is a congenital anomaly defined as the presence of accessory limb(s) attached to various body regions. This paper describes a case of SEL with ectopic lung and ectopia cordis in a newborn calf, based on macroscopic, microscopic and radiographic findings. External features of multiple congenital anomalies included an ectopic lung growing over the middle of the backbone and covered with normal haired skin. Ectopia cordis was found in the abdominal cavity and attached to the liver. Two extra abnormal limbs originated separately from within the ectopic lung. Most of the abdominal organs were exposed to the outside through the opened abdominal cavity. Microscopically the ectopic lung tissue had edema in the connective tissue around the bronchus and artery. Changes in other organs included congestion of the renal medulla, infiltration of inflammatory cells (lymphocytes and eosinophils) around the hepatic portal tract, and edema surrounding blood vessels and neurons in the brain. The rudimentary humerus of the forelimb was attached to the thoracic spine, as viewed radiographically. The hindlimb was consisted of an irregularly shaped femur, short tibia and fibula, two tarsal bones, one metatarsal bone, and three phalanges. This is the first description of congenital anomalies involving the SEL, ectopic lung and ectopia cordis in a calf.
Five-month-old a female mongrel puppy weighing 3.5 kg showed no systemic disorder and particular discomfort except abdominal distension at the first visit. On physical examination an irregular abdominal mass was palpated. One month later she was clumsy and uncoordinated. In addition, lethargy and anorexia were appeared. Then she became comatose and died in spite of initial therapy. In radiographic examination enlargement of both sides of kidney was observed. The hematological examination the dog had WBC of 16,250/$\mu$l, RBC of $7.2{\times}10^6$$\mu$l, PCV of 32%, total protein of 8.0 g/dl, and fibrinogen of 900 mg/dl. In serum chemistry BUN was 87.4 mg/dl and creatinine was 5.1 mg/dl. Urinalysis revealed pH of 5.6, SG of 1.009 and protein of 500 mg/dl. In urine sediment test many RBCs, leukocytes, inflammatory cells and a few epithelial cells were observed. On histopathologic examination the size of right and left kidney were 15 cm, 16 cm in length, 6 cm, 6 cm in widths, respectively. Both sides of kidney were filled with brown-orange fluid and had irregular capsular surface. The cysts of various sizes were located throughout the cortex and medulla. No abnormality was found in any other organs. Histologically, cyst was lined by cuboidal to slightly flattened tubular epithelium and surrounded by mature fibrous connective tissue. Glomeruli, tubule and renal pelvis remained normal between cysts and exfoliated epithelial cells.
Deer hemal nodes were studied by gross anatomy and light microscopy. Hemal nodes were scattered in the periphery of thoracic and abdominal aortae, and spherical or avoid in shape. A hemal node consisted of a thin capsule and a hilum, and had numerous small subcapsular and deep sinuses distended by a great number of erythrocytes. Although a few lymphatic nodules and tissues were seen in the parenchyma, no typical cortex and medulla was defined. Blood vessels occurred, but lymph vessel was not observed in nodes. The parenchyma of the hemal node consisted of many erythrocytes and lymphocytes, and a few granulocytes, plasma cells megakaryocytes and macrophages. The stroma was composed of reticular cells and fibers. The capsule and trabecula was a collagenous connective tissue with smooth myofibers. The above findings suggest that the hemal nodes are involved in blood storage, blood filtration and immune reaction.
This study was performed to investigate the gross anatomical features and microscopical structures of the hemal nodes and the hemolymph nodes in the sheep. The hemal nodes and hemolymph nodes were observed mainly in periphery of the thoracic and abdominal aortae of the animals. The size of hemal nodes was generally smaller than that of the hemolymph nodes, and the shape of the both organs was spherical or ovoid. The color of the hemal nodes was red, while that of the hemolymph nodes was grary with red bands. The hemal nodes were surrounded by a relatively thick connective tissue capsule and there were extensive subcapsular sinuses distended by a great number of erythrocytes. Although a few number of lymphatic nodules and small areas of diffuse lymphatic tissues were observed in the parenchyma, no typical cortex and medulla were defined in the hemal node. Small numbers of blood vessels were found at the connective tissue capsule but lymph vessel was not observed microscopically in this organ. The hemolymph nodes were covered by a relatively thick connective tissue capsule and there was a hilus in each node. The parenchyma was divided into cortex and medulla. The cortex was composed of a few numbers of lymphatic nodules and some diffuse lymphatic tissues. The medulla comprised medullary sinuses and cords. Afferent and efferent lymph vessels were observed at the periphery of the capsule adn the hilus, respectively. The subcapsular and medullary sinuses were not extensive but filled with small numbers of erythrocytes. The stroma of hemal node and hemolymph node was composed of reticular cells and fibers, and the capsule and trabecula consisted of collagenous fibers with smooth muscle fibers.
Hemolymph nodes of the Korean native cattle were observed gross anatomically and light microscopically in this study. Hemolymph nodes of the Korean native cattle were found mainly at the periphery of the thoracic and abdominal aortae although there were some other parts to observe these small organs. These organs were small in size and spherical or ovoid in shape, and color of them was dark red or gray in common with red band. The hemolymph nodes were surrounded by a relatively thick connective tissue capsules composed of dense collagen fibers with many scattered smooth muscle fibers and there was a hilus in each node. The parenchyma was divided into an outer cortex and an inner medulla. A few primary and secondary lymph nodules were observed in the cortex and there were diffuse lymphatic tissues among them. The medullary cords consisted of diffuse lymphatic tissues were separated by the medullary sinuses which filled with erythrocytes. The afferent and efferent lymph vessels were observed at the periphery of the capsule and the hilus area, respectively. The stroma of the hemolymph nodes was composed of reticular cells and fibers, and the meshwork of the stroma was filled with many lymphocytes and erythrocytes, and a few macrophages and megakaryocytes etc. These findings suggest that the hemolymph node of the Korean native cattle is involved in blood filtration and immune reaction.
Statement of problem : Titanium is widely used as an implant material lot artificial teeth. Also, studies on surface treatment to form a fine passive film on the surface of commercial titanium or its alloys and improving bioactivity with bone have been carried out. However, there is insufficient data about the biocompatibility of the implant materials in the body. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine whether the precipitation of apatite on titanium metal is affected by surface modification. Materials and methods: Specimens chemically washed for 2 minute in a 1:1:1.5 (in vol%) mixture of 48% HF 60% $HNO_3$ and distilled water. Specimens were then chemically treated with a solution containing 97% $H_2SO_4$ and 30% $H_2O_2$ at $40^{\circ}C$S for 1 hour, and subsequently heat-treated at $400^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour. All specimens were immersed in the HBSS with pH 7.4 at $36.5^{\circ}C$ for 15 days, and the surface were examined with TF-XRD, SEM, EDX and XPS. Also, commercial purity Ti specimens with and without surface treatment were implanted in the abdominal connective tissue of mice for 4 weeks. Conventional aluminium and stainless steel 316L were also implanted for comparison. Results and conclusions : The results obtained were summarized as follows. 1. An amorphous titania gel layer was formed on the titanium surface after the titanium specimen was treated with a $H_2SO_4$ and $H_2O_2$ solution. The average roughness was $2.175{\mu}m$ after chemical surface treatment. 2. The amorphous titania was subsequently transformed into anatase by heat treatment at $400^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour. 3. The average thickness of the fibrous capsule surrounding the specimens implanted in the connective tissue was $46.98{\mu}m$ in chemically-treated Ti, and 52.20, 168.65 and $100.95{\mu}m$ respectively in commercial pure Ti, aluminum and stainless steel 316L without any treatment.
