In this study, static and fatigue tests on the self-piercing riveted (SPR) joint were conducted using cross-shaped specimens with aluminum alloy (Al-5052) sheets. Mixed mode loading was achieved by changing the loading angles of 0, 45, and 90 degrees using a special fixture to evaluate the static and fatigue strengths of the SPR joints under mixed mode loading conditions. Simulations of the specimens at three loading angles were carried out using the finite element code ABAQUS. The fatigue specimens failed in an interfacial mode where a crack initiated at the upper sheet and propagated along the longitudinal direction and finally fractured Maximum principal stress, von-Mises effective stress failed to correlate the fatigue lifetimes at three loading angles. However, the equivalent stress intensity factor was found to be appropriate to correlate the fatigue lifetimes at three loading angles.

Each part of drum brake system is loaded by continual mechanical force and thermal force every time of braking, so enough strength and stability are required. Thermal characteristic is one of the important factors in drum brake systems design. This paper presents the thermal performance such as temperature distribution and thermal contact stress of drum brake system considering several braking patterns; 80th heat braking test mode, heat fade braking test mode, general road mode, steep slope road mode and off road mode. Transient heat transfer analysis and Thermo elastic contact analysis is executed to obtain the temperature distribution, and to evaluate thermal stress of drum brake by using ABAQUS/Standard code. This procedure of analysis can effectively be used to improve the quality problem of brake system and to get design guideline of the new product.
In this study, the effect of various adhesively bonded composite patches on mechanical properties of notched Al-Mg alloy plates was analyzed. For this purpose firstly, the un-notched and notched specimens were fabricated from 5086 Al-Mg alloys which have been used in armor-plated military vehicles. The surface notches as a flaw were machined with circular cutting tool to form notch aspect ratio a/c=0.15 and notch-to-thickness ratios a/t=0.5 in the radial direction on the test specimens. Then, various composite patches which reinforced by glass, carbon and Kevlar fibers were bonded adhesively at elliptically surface notches. Finally, experimental measurements conducted by applying tensile static loading. The experimental results showed that repairing with composite patches with order of carbon, glass and Kevlar fibers have remarkable effect on tensile strength of the notched plate. Also the finite element models were developed using Abaqus/Explicit code to predict the tensile strength and elongation of unrepaired notched specimen and specimen repaired by carbon fiber composite patch. The comparison between numerical and experimental results showed good agreement between them and proved the accuracy of numerical modeling.
In this paper dynamic behavior (modal analysis and dynamic transient response) of a novel sandwich T-joint is numerically and experimentally investigated. An epoxy adhesive is selected for bonding purpose and making the step wise graded behavior of adhesive region. The effect of the step graded behavior of the adhesive zone on dynamic behavior of a sandwich T-joint is numerically studied. Finite element analysis (FEA) of the T-joints with carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) face-sheets is performed by ABAQUS 6.12-1 FEM code software. Modal analysis and dynamic half-sine transient response of the sandwich T-joint are presented in this paper. Two verification processes employed to verify the dynamic modeling of the manufactured sandwich panels and T-joint modeling. It has been shown that the step wise graded adhesive zone cases have changed the second natural frequency by about 5%. Also, it has been shown that the different arranges in the step wise graded adhesive zone significantly affect the maximum stresses due to transient dynamic loading by 1112% decrease in maximum peel stress and 691.9% decrease in maximum shear stress on the adhesive region.
A number of desirable characteristics concerning excellent durability, aesthetics, recyclability, high ductility and fire resistance have made stainless steel a preferred option in engineering practice. However, the relatively high initial cost has greatly restricted the application of stainless steel as a major structural material in general construction. This drawback can be partially overcome by introducing composite stainless steel-concrete structures, which provides a cost-efficient and sustainable solution for future stainless steel construction. This paper presents a preliminary numerical study on stainless steel-concrete composite beam-to-column joints with bolted flush endplates. In order to ensure a consistent corrosion resistance within the whole structural system, all structural steel components were designed with austenitic stainless steel, including beams, columns, endplates, bolts, reinforcing bars and shear connectors. A finite element model was developed using ABAQUS software for composite beam-to-column joints under monotonic and symmetric hogging moments, while validation was performed based on independent test results. A parametric study was subsequently conducted to investigate the effects of several critical factors on the behaviour of composite stainless steel joints. Finally, comparisons were made between the numerical results and the predictions by current design codes regarding the plastic moment capacity and the rotational stiffness of the joints. It was concluded that the present codes of practice generally overestimate the rotational stiffness and underestimate the plastic moment resistance of stainless steel-concrete composite joints.
Topology optimization of structures seeking the best distribution of mass in a design space to improve the structural performance and reduce the weight of a structure is one of the most comprehensive issues in the field of structural optimization. In addition to structures stiffness as the most common objective function, frequency optimization is of great importance in variety of applications too. In this paper, an efficient multi-objective Bi-directional Evolutionary Structural Optimization (BESO) method is developed for topology optimization of frequency and stiffness in continuum structures simultaneously. A software package including a Matlab code and Abaqus FE solver has been created for the numerical implementation of multi-objective BESO utilizing the weighted function method. At the same time, by considering the weaknesses of the optimized structure in single-objective optimizations for stiffness or frequency problems, slight modifications have been done on the numerical algorithm of developed multi-objective BESO in order to overcome challenges due to artificial localized modes, checker boarding and geometrical symmetry constraint during the progressive iterations of optimization. Numerical results show that the proposed Multiobjective BESO method is efficient and optimal solutions can be obtained for continuum structures based on an existent finite element model of the structures.
This paper presents an experimental study on a 1/2 scale steel frame with archaized-style under the pseudo-dynamic loading. Four seismic waves, including El Centro wave, Taft wave, Lanzhou wave and Wenchuan wave, were input during the test. The hysteresis characteristic, energy dissipation acceleration response, displacement response, strength, stiffness and strain were analyzed. Based on the experiment, the elastoplastic dynamic time-history analysis was carried out with the software ABAQUS. The stress distribution and failure mode were obtained. The results indicate that the steel frame with archaized-style was in elastic stage when the peak acceleration of input wave was no more than 400 gal. Under Wenchuan wave with peak acceleration of 620 gal, the steel frame enters into the elastoplastic stage, the maximum inter-story drift was 1/203 and the bearing capacity still tended to increase. During the loading process, Dou-Gong yielded first and played the role of the first seismic fortification line, and then beam ends and column bottom ends yielded in turn. The steel frame with archaized-style has good seismic performance and meets the seismic design requirement of Chinese code.
It is essential to design crashworthy marine structures for operations in Arctic regions, especially ice-covered waters, where the structures must have sufficient capacity to resist iceberg impact. In this study, a numerical analysis of a colliding accident between an iceberg and stiffened plates was carried out employing the commercial finite element code ABAQUS/Explicit. The ice material model developed by Liu et al. (2011) was implemented in the simulations, and its availability was verified by performing some numerical simulations. The influence of the ambient temperature on the structural resistance was evaluated while the local stress, plastic strain, and strain energy density in the structure members were addressed. The present study revealed the risk of fracture in terms of steel embrittlement induced by ambient temperature. As a result, the need to consider the possibility of brittle failure in a plate-stiffener junction during operations in Arctic regions is acknowledged. Further experimental work to understand the structural behavior in a plate-stiffener junction and HAZ is required.
The reinforced concrete lining of hydraulic pressure tunnels tends to crack under high inner water pressure (IWP), which results in the inner water exosmosis along cracks and involves typical hydro-mechanical interaction. This study aims at the development, validation and application of an indirect-coupled method to simulate the lining cracking process. Based on the concrete damage plasticity (CDP) model, the utility routine GETVRM and the user subroutine USDFLD in the finite element code ABAQUS is employed to calculate and adjust the secondary hydraulic conductivity according to the material damage and the plastic volume strain. The friction-contact method (FCM) is introduced to track the lining-rock interface behavior. Compared with the traditional node-shared method (NSM) model, the FCM model is more feasible to simulate the lining cracking process. The number of cracks and the reinforcement stress can be significantly reduced, which matches well with the observed results in engineering practices. Moreover, the damage evolution of reinforced concrete lining can be effectively slowed down. This numerical method provides an insight into the cracking process of reinforced concrete lining in hydraulic pressure tunnels.

Investigation of the stability of arch dam abutments is one of the most important aspects in the analysis of this type of dams. To this end, the Bakhtiari dam, a doubly curved arch dam having six wedges at each of its abutments, is selected. The seismic safety of dam abutments is studied through time history analysis using the design-based earthquake (DBE) and maximum credible earthquake (MCE) hazard levels. Londe limit equilibrium method is used to calculate the stability of wedges in abutments. The thrust forces are obtained using ABAQUS, and stability of wedges is calculated using the code written within MATLAB. Effects of foundation flexibility, grout curtain performance, vertical component of earthquake, nonlinear behavior of materials, and geometrical nonlinearity on the safety factor of the abutments are scrutinized. The results show that the grout curtain performance is the main affecting factor on the stability of the abutments, while nonlinear behavior of the materials is the least affecting factor amongst others. Also, it is resulted that increasing number of the contraction joints can improve the seismic stability of dam. A cap is observed on the number of joints, above which the safety factor does not change incredibly.
