Seasonal Changes in Physiology of the abalone Haliotis discus hannai reared from Nohwa Island on the South Coast of Korea (북방전복 Haliotis discus hannai의 계절별 생리적 변화)

  • Growth, oxygen consumption, ammonia excretion, feeding and assimilation rate were examined from May 2010 to February 2011 in order to assess the physiological changes of Haliotis discus hannai in accordance with changes in season. The water temperature was in the range of $8-23.2^{\circ}C$ and the salinity in the range of 31.9-34.1psu during the examination period. The length of shell of Haliotis discus hannai grew from 36.3 mm to 66.1 mm in the 1 year old entities and from 60.6 mm to 66.1 mm for the 2 year old entities, while the weight of the meat increased from 3.16 g to 12.04 g and from 15.8 g to 21.5 g, respectively. The oxygen consumption and ammonia excretion rate displayed trend of increase in accordance with the increase in water temperature, while the feeding rate was high during the period from July to October. The assimilation rate was in the range of 68%-71% without significant difference between the age of the entities and seasons. SFG displayed +value throughout the year for the 1 year old entities of Haliotis discus hannai as well as for the 2 year old entities with the exception of the period of July, thereby showing that they are growing throughout the year. Therefore, there was no environmental effect including water temperature and salinity during the examination period.

Effects of Water Temperatures on the Larval Development and Spat Growth of the Cockle Shell, Fulvia mutica (새조개 (Fulvia mutica) 난 발생 및 유생 성장에 미치는 수온의 영향)

  • The effect of water temperature on spawning induction, larval development, spat settling and its growth of the cockle shell, Fulvia mutica, were investigated to obtain the basic data for effective seed production. The eggs, which were randomly divided into 6 groups of water temperatures of 14, 17, 20, 23, 26 and $29^{\circ}C$, were transferred into 1 L beaker, respectively. The relationships between the water temperature and the required time (1/h, hour) by each egg developmental stage were calculated. Biological minimum water temperature and the cumulative water temperature until egg development of the veliger stage were calculated to be $0.1^{\circ}C$ and $397.3^{\circ}C$, respectively. The optimal water temperature for developmental bioassay of F. mutica was clarified to be $23^{\circ}C$. The required time for the embryo to become veliger larvae was 20 hours at $23^{\circ}C$.

Studies on the Morphological and Physiological Characteristics of Pleurotus cystidiosus O.K.Miller, the Abalone Mushroom (전복느타리버섯(Pleurotus cystidiosus O.K.Miller)의 형태적 및 생리적 특성에 관한 연구)

  • The pileus of Pleurotus cystidiosus was attached at the side and was spatular-shape. It grew to the size of $7.6{\sim}9.8\;cm$ with dark brown color. The length of stem was $1.4{\sim}2.9\;cm$. The individual weight of fruiting-body was 25.4 g in average. This study was conducted to Investigate the physiological characteristics and to develop the artificial cultivation technique of P. cystidiosus. To find out the optimum condition of mycelial growth of P. cystidiosus, physiological conditions such as media, temperature, pH carbon sources and nitrogen sources were investigated. Various cultural media were used for the cultivation of P. cystidiosus and compost dextrose agar was favorable for mycelial growth. The optimal growing temperature and pH were in range of 25 to $30^{\circ}C$, pH $7{\sim}9$, respectively. When different carbon sources were compared, glucose was found to be best. However nitrogen sources were different with each strains. When different C/N ratio were compared, 20:1 of C/N ratio was found to be best.

STUDIES ON THE PROPAGATION OF ABALONE (전복의 증식에 관한 연구)

  • The spawning of the abalone, Haliotis discus hannai, was induced In October 1969 by air ex-position for about 30 minutes. At temperatures of from 14.0 to $18.8^{\circ}C$, the youngest trochophore stage was reached within 22 hours after the egg was laid. The trochophore was transformed into the veliger stage within 34 hours after fertilization. For $7\~9$ days after oviposition the veliger floated in sea water and then settled to the bottom. The peristomal shell was secreted along the outer lip of the aperture of the larval shell, and the first respiratory pore appears at about 110 days after fertilization. The shell attained a length of 0.40 mm in 15 days, 1.39 mm in 49 days, 2.14 mm in 110 days, 5.20 mm in 170 days and 10.00 mm in 228 days respectively. Monthly growth rate of the shell length is expressed by the following equation :$L=0.9981\;e^{0.18659M}$ where L is shell length and M is time in month. The density of floating larvae in the culture tank was about 10 larvae per 100 co. The number of larvae attached to a polyethylene collector ($30\times20\;cm$) ranged from 10 to 600. Mortality of the settled larvae on the polyethylene collector was about $87.0\%$ during 170 days following settlement. The culture of Nauicula sp. was made with rough polyethylene collectors hung at three different depths, namely 5 cm, 45 cm and 85 cm. At each depth the highest cell concentration appeared after $15\~17$ days, and the numbers of cells are shown as follows: $$5\;cm\;34.3\times10^4\;Cells/cm^2$$ $$45\;cm\;27.2\times10^4\;Cells/cm^2$$ $$85\;cm\;26.3\times10^4\;Cells/cm^2$$ At temperatures of from 13.0 to $14.3^{\circ}C$, the distance travelled by the larvae (3.0 mm In shell length) averaged 11.36 mm for a Period of 30 days. Their locomation was relatively active between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m., and $52.2\%$ of them moved during this period. When the larvae (2.0 mm in shell length) were kept in water at $0\;to\;\~1.8^{\circ}C$, they moved 1.15cm between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. and 0.10 cm between midnight and 8 a.m. The relationships between shell length and body weight of the abalone sampled from three different localities are shown as follows: Dolsan-do $W=0.2479\;L^{2.5721}$ Huksan-do $W=0.1001\;L^{3.1021}$ Pohang $W=0.9632\;L^{2.0611}$

Fisheries Management of an Abalone Haliotis diversicolor in the Eastern Coastal Waters of Jeju Island using Yield-per-recruit Model (가입당생산량(yield-per-recruit) 모델을 이용한 제주 동부연안 오분자기류(Haliotis diversicolor)의 어업관리)

  • We studied the management policy for Haliotis diversicolor fisheries in the coastal area of Sungsanpo using Yield-per-recruit model from 2004 to 2006. The age at first capture($t_c$) and fishing mortality(F) annually estimated during the study period decreased and increased, respectively. The maximum yield-per-recruit in 2004 was increased by increasing $t_c$ from the 2.012 year of current $t_c$ to 2.7 year or increasing F from the 0.574/year of current F to 0.800/year, and that in 2005 was increased by increasing $t_c$ from the 1.946 year of current $t_c$ to 2.5 year or increasing F from the 0.578/year of current F to 0.880/year. In 2006, the maximum yield-per-recruit was increased by increasing $t_c$ from the 1.926year of current $t_c$ to 3.1 year or decreasing F from the 1.088/year of current F to 0.810/year. Further, although the current F in 2004 and 2005 was lower than the estimated $F_{MAX}$, that in 2006 was higher than the estimated $F_{MAX}$. These results indicate that the likelihood of growth overfishing with increasing catch of smaller H. diversicolor in 2006 was greater than in 2004 and 2005. As action that could prevent growth overfishing in fisheries management of H. diversicolor, increasing for the current $t_c$ could be a more appropriate policy because the artificial decrease of the number of woman divers related F is actually difficult.

Metamorphic P-T Paths from Devonian Pelitic Schists from the Pelham Dome, Massachusetts, USA (뉴잉글랜드 펠암돔 주변부 데본기 변성 이질암의 변성 온도-압력 경로)

  • Major element zoning has been analyzed in garnet porphroblasts obtained from the Grt-St and Ky-Grt-St grade assemblages in Zones I on the northern flank of the Pelham Dome, north central Massachusetts. These porphyroblasts grew during multiple phases of deformation and meta-morphism revealed by the inclusion trail geometry plus the chemical zoning patterns within garnet porphyroblasts. Unusual zoning patterns, including zoning reversals and gradient changes in XMn, zlgzag patterns in Fe/(Fe +Mg) and staircase-shaped patterns in XCa, are coincident with textural truncations and other changes in microstructure within the garnet porphrublasts. Chemical variations in plagioclase, biotite, muscovite and staurolite combined with inclusion trail geometry and petrography reveal that the garnet zoning patterns are modified by combinations of the following. (1) Uni-and divariant reactions involving garnet consumption(Grt+ Chl+Ms=St+Bt+Qtz + $H_2$O) and production(St+Ms + Qtz= Bt+ Grt +A1$_2$$SiO_{5}$ + $H_2$O). (2) Deformation induced episudic ionit dissolution, preferential diffusion and re-distribution during foliation development. (3) P-T changes during growth of the porphyroblasts. The P-T paths combined with petrographic and inclusion trail morphology observations consist of two pattens; (1) heating/compression during NW-SE shortening; and (2) decompression with cooling during NNW-SSE shortening. Based on temperature-time(T-t) geochronological data and late-Paleozoic tectonic model, Alleghanian metamorphism, which is the result of heterogeneous shearing concentrated along the boundary between the Abalone Terrane(Pelham dome) and cover rocks(Bronson Hill Terrane), has produced Ky-St-Ms mineral assemblage during Pennsylvanian(290-300 Ma) in Shutesbury area. However, temperature of alleghanian metamorphism was not high enough to form garnet and staurolite in the Northfiled syncline area. Alleghanian metamorphism has affected only the matrix due to heterogeneous shearing in the study area.

Physicochemical Characteristics of Seafood-Added Kimchi during Fermentation and Its Sensory Properties (수산물 첨가 김치의 이화학적 특성 변화 및 관능성)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the physicochemical characteristics of seafood added kimchi (SAK) during fermentation and its sensory properties. Korean cabbage kimchi (KCK) and four different SAKs were prepared and stored at $5^{\circ}C$ for eight weeks. The SAKs contained pre-treated octopus, squid, abalone, and webfoot octopus added at 12% (w/w) to the brined Korean cabbage. The fermentation patterns of SAKs were similar to those of KCK, indicating that the SAKs followed a typical fermentation process. Comparison of the physicochemical characteristics of SAKs with KCK revealed that the pH and acidity of SAKs was higher. The maximum concentrations of Lactobacillus spp. and Leuconostoc spp. for SAKs ranged from 8.31~8.85 and 7.60~8.14 log CFU/mL, respectively, which were higher than those for KCK. Therefore, the production of organic acids by microorganisms was greater in SAKs, which explained the higher acidities of the SAKs. Nitrogenous compounds hydrolyzed during fermentation, as well as reducing sugars and other nutritious compounds in SAKs might provide a good medium for lactic acid bacterial growth. Sensory evaluation was carried out using optimally ripened kimchi (pH $4.3{\pm}0.1$, acidity $0.7{\pm}0.1$), and the scores for sour taste, sour smell, and carbonated taste were significantly lower for SAKs than KCK. In the preference test, texture and overall acceptability were significantly higher for SAKs than KCK. Significant differences were not observed among SAKs upon subjective and preference evaluations. In conclusion, the fermentation patterns of SAKs were normal, regardless of seafood sources, and their sensory characteristics were comparable to or superior than those of KCK due to free amino acids, nitrogenous compounds produced during the fermentation, and reducing sugar present in the seafood.
