  • This paper describes design of a (32, 28) Reed Solomon decoder for optical compact disk with double error detecting and correcting capability. A variety of error correction codes(ECCs) have been used in magnetic recordings, and optical recordings. Among the various types of ECCs, Reed Solomon(RS) codes has emerged as one the most important ones. The most complex circuit in the RS decoder is the part for finding the error location numbers by solving error location polynomial, and the circuit has great influence on overall decoder complexity. We use RAM based architecture with Euclid's algorithm, Chien search algorithm and Forney algorithm. We have developed VHDL model and peformed logic synthesis using the SYNOPSYS CAD tool. The total umber of gate is about 11,000 gates.

  • Resistance to sliding (RS) between the bracket, wire, and ligature has been largely debated in orthodontics. Despite the extensive number of published studies, the lack of discussion of the methods used has led to little understanding of this phenomenon. The aim of this study was to discuss variables affecting RS in orthodontics and to suggest an operative protocol. The search included $PubMed^{(c)}$, $Medline^{(c)}$, and the Cochrane $Library^{(c)}$. References of full-text articles were manually analyzed. English-language articles published between January 2007 and January 2017 that performed an in vitro analysis of RS between the bracket, wire, and ligature were included. Study methods were analyzed based on the study design, description of materials, and experimental setup, and a protocol to standardize the testing methods was proposed. From 404 articles identified from the database search and 242 records selected from published references, 101 were eligible for the qualitative analysis, and six for the quantitative synthesis. One or more experimental parameters were incompatible and a meta-analysis was not performed. Major factors regarding the study design, materials, and experimental setup were not clearly described by most studies. The normal force, that is the force perpendicular to the sliding of the wire and one of the most relevant variable in RS, was not considered by most studies. Different variables were introduced, often acting as confounding factors. A protocol was suggested to standardize testing procedures and enhance the understanding of in vitro findings.

  • With the recent development of Internet of Things (IoT) technology, smartization technology is expanding to the fields of agriculture, livestock, and fisheries, and smartization is in progress. In this smart technology, the most important thing is how to measure the data in the field and transmit it to the management system. Currently, the sensors used in the construction of smart farms and other livestock houses and farms are measuring and monitoring smart farms and other environmental conditions through various sensors such as temperature, humidity, CO gas, CO2, hydrogen, and O2. The communication method between these sensors and the HMI (Human Machine Interface) module that controls and manages the smart farm is still mainly using the RS-485-based modbus-RTU method. In this paper, we intend to design the MCU module for HMI so that various sensor modules can be connected to manage data through the RS-485-based Modbus method so that the sensor data required for smart farm construction can be managed by the HMI module.

  • For efficient hardware (HW) implementation of elliptic curve cryptography (ECC), various sub-modules for the underlying finite field operations should be implemented efficiently. Among these sub-modules, modular inversion (MI) requires the most computation; therefore, its performance might be a dominant factor of the overall performance of an ECC module. To determine the most efficient MI algorithm for an HW ECC module, we implement various classes of MI algorithms and analyze their performance. In contrast to the common belief in previous research, our results show that the right-shift binary inversion (RS) algorithm performs well when implemented in hardware. In addition, we present optimization methods to reduce the area overhead and improve the speed of the RS algorithm. By applying these methods, we propose a new RS-variant that is both fast and compact. The proposed MI module is more than twice as fast as the other two classes of MI: shifting Euclidean (SE) and left-shift binary inversion (LS) algorithms. It consumes only 15% more area and even 5% less area than SE and LS, respectively. Finally, we show that how our new method can be applied to optimize an HW ECC module.

  • This paper describes a novel disaster evacuation system using embedded systems such as smart devices for crisis and emergency management. In indoor environments deployed with the Bluetooth Low Energy(BLE) beacons, smart devices detect their indoor positions from beacon messages and interact with Map Server(MS) and Route Server(RS) in the Internet over the LTE and/or Wi-Fi functions. The MS and RS generate an optimal path to the nearest emergency exit based on a novel graph generation method for less route computation, called the Disaster Evacuation Graph(DEG), for each smart device. The DEG also enables efficient processing of some constraints in the computation of route, such as load balancing in situation of different capacities of paths or exits. All data interfaces among three system components, the MS, RS, smart devices, have been defined for modular implementation of our disaster evacuation system. Our experimental system has been deployed and tested in our building thoroughly and gives a good evidence that the modular design of the system and a novel approach to compute emergency route based on the DEG is competitive and viable.

  • Eight multiparous Holstein cows ($632{\pm}12$ kg BW; $135{\pm}16$ DIM) were used in a replicated $4{\times}4$ Latin square design to evaluate the effects of forage sources on rumen fermentation characteristics, performance, and microbial protein (MCP) synthesis. The forage portion of the diets contained alfalfa hay (AH), oat hay (OH), Leymus chinensis (LC), or rice straw (RS) as the primary source of fiber. Diets were isonitrogenous and isocaloric, and cows were fed four corn silages based total mixed rations with equivalent nonfiber carbohydrate (NFC) and forage neutral detergent fiber (NDF). Dry matter intake was not affected by the source of dietary forages, ranging from 18.83 to 19.20 kg/d, consequently, milk yield was similar among diets. Because of the numerical differences in milk fat and milk protein concentrations, 4% FCM and ECM yields were unchanged (p>0.05). Mean rumen pH, NH3-N content, and concentrations of volatile fatty acids in the rumen fluid were not affected by the treatments (p>0.05). Dietary treatments did not affect the total tract apparent digestibility of dry matter, organic matter, and crude protein (p>0.05); however, digestibility of NDF and acid detergent fiber in RS diet was higher compared with AH, OH, and LC diets (p<0.05). Total purine derivative excretion was higher in cows fed AH, OH, and LC diets compared with those fed RS diet (p<0.05), consequently, estimated MCP synthesis was 124.35 g/d higher in cows fed AH diet compared with those fed RS diet (p<0.05). The results indicated that cows fed AH, OH, LC, and RS diets with an equivalent forage NDF and NFC have no unfavourable effect on the ruminal fermentation and productive parameters.

  • Objectives : Isolated cleft lip with or without cleft palate(CL/P) is among the most common human birth defects, with a prevalence of approximately 1 in 700 live births. The B-Cell Leukemia/lymphoma 3(BCL3) gene has been suggested as a candidate gene for CL/P based on association and linkage studies in some populations. This study tests for an association between markers in BCL3 and isolated, non-syndromic CL/P using a case-parent trio design, while considering parent-of-origin effects. Methods : Forty case-parent trios were genotyped for two single nucleotide polymorphisms(SNPs) in the BCL3 gene. We performed a transmission disequilibrium test(TDT) on individual SNPs, and the FAMHAP package was used to estimate haplotype frequencies and to test for excess transmission of multi-SNP haplotypes. Results : The odds ratio for transmission of the minor allele, OR(transmission), was significant for SNP rs8100239(OR=3.50, p=0.004) and rs2965169(OR=2.08, p=0.027) when parent-of-origin was not considered. Parentspecific TDT revealed that SNP rs8100239 showed excess maternal transmission. Analysis of haplotypes of rs2965169 and rs8100239 also suggested excess maternal transmission. Conclusions : BCL3 appears to influence risk of CL/P through a parent-of-origin effect with excess maternal transmission.

  • Objective: Leucaena leucocephala (Leucaena) is a perennial tropical legume that can be directly grazed or harvested and offered to ruminants as hay, silage, or fresh. However, Leucaena contain phenolic compounds, which are considered anti-nutritional factors as these may reduce intake, digestibility and thus animal performance. Therefore, the objective of this experiment was to determine effects of Leucaena silage (LS) feeding levels on rumen microbial populations, N-balance and microbial protein synthesis in dairy steers. Methods: Four, rumen fistulated dairy steers with initial weight of $167{\pm}12kg$ were randomly assigned to receive dietary treatments according to a $4{\times}4$ Latin square design. Treatments were as followings: T1 = untreated rice straw (RS; Control), T2 = 70% RS+30% LS, T3 = 40% RS+60% LS, and T4 = 100% LS. Dairy steers were fed rice straw and LS ad libitum and supplemented with concentrate at 0.2% of body weight/d. Results: Results revealed that the rumen microbial population, especially cellulolytic, proteolytic bacteria and fungal zoospores were enhanced in steers that received 60% of LS (p<0.05), whereas the amylolytic bacteria population was not affected by treatments (p>0.05). Protozoal population was linearly decreased with increasing level of LS (p<0.05). Moreover, N-balance and microbial protein synthesis were enhanced by LS feeding (p<0.05) and were the highest in 60% LS group. Conclusion: Based on this study, it could be concluded that replacement of RS with 60% LS significantly improved microbial population and microbial protein synthesis in diary steers.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) wrist taping, after the application of a rhythmic stabilization (RS) technique, on the decrease of pain and the increase of grip strength in physical therapists who complained of wrist pain and to provide basic data on interventions for wrist pain patients. Methods: The subjects were 15 peoples in their 20s who complained of pain with a visual analogue scale (VAS) at five points or higher due to overuse of their wrists. They were randomly assigned to a control group, to which PNF wrist taping was applied after stretching (n=7), or to an experimental group (n=8), to which PNF wrist taping was applied after application of the RS technique of PNF. The experiment was conducted for four weeks, five times per week. VAS was measured in order to measure pain decrease, and grip strength (GS) was measured using a dynamometer. In order to compare within-group differences before and after the intervention, a paired t-test was performed, and in order to compare differences between the two groups, the analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was used. All statistically significant levels were set at ${\alpha}=0.05$. Results: There were significant differences in changes of VAS and GS within each group before and after the intervention (p<0.01), but there was no significant difference between the two groups. Conclusion: This study applied PNF wrist taping after the application of stretching or PNF RS to patients who complained of pain beyond a sense of discomfort; these interventions resulted in a decrease in pain and an increase in the grip strength of the subjects. Taping and therapeutic techniques using PNF are considered to be usefully applied as one of the programs to improve wrist pain patients' pain and grip strength.

  • Degradation of handling qualities(HQs) due to bad weather or mechanical failure can pose a fatal risk to pilots unfamiliar with such situation. In particular, icing is an important issue to consider as it is a frequent cause of accidents. Most of the previous research works focuses on aerodynamic performance changes due to icing and the corresponding icing modeling or methods to prevent icing, whereas the present work attempts to actively compensate for HQ degradation due to icing on a full-scale helicopter through flight control law design. To this end, the present work first demonstrates HQ degradation due to icing using CONDUIT software, and subsequently presents a robust control design via the RS-LQR(Robust Servomechanism Linear Quadratic Regulation) procedure to compensate for the HQ degradation. Simulation results show that the proposed robust control maintains Level 1 HQ in the presence of icing.
