Objectives : This study was done for reporting the effect of moxibustion therapy on Ryodoraku score of the patients with degenerative arthritis of knee joint. Methods : We investigated 65 cases of patients with degenerative arthritis of knee joint, and devided patients into two groups : One group treated by moxibustion therapy, which was not applied to the other group we analyzed of each group the Ryodoraku score(F1, F6) of each group before and after moxibustion therapy and compared it. Results : 1. In moxibustion therapy group compared with baseline, at final, Ryodoraku score(F1, F6) was significantly increased. 2. At final, moxibustion therapy group showed significant increase on Ryodoraku score(F1, F6) score compared with non moxibustion therapy group. Conclusions : It is suggested that Ryodoraku score(F1, F6) should be available for diagnosing degenerative arthritis of knee joint.

Objectives : This study was done for reporting effect of moxibustion therapy on the degenerative arthritis of knee joint with osteochondroma. Methods : Two patient with degenerative arthritis of knee joint with osteochondroma was treated by moxibustion therapy. We applied moxibustion therapy three times a day for 12 days(three days per week). To investigate effectiveness of treatment we used visual analogue scale, Korean Western Ontario and McMaster Universities. Results : 1. The moxibustion therapy deceased knee joint pain. 2. As a result of evaluation by visual analogue scale, Korean Western Ontario and McMaster Universities the score marked lower than before treatment and after treatment. Conclusion : Moxibustion therapy decreased knee joint pain that patient have degenerative arthritis of knee joint with osteochondroma.

This study was designed to examine therapeutic effect of natural honeybee (Apis mellifera) venom in pigs with arthritis. Pigs were assigned to treated and nontreated control groups. In treated group, 51 pigs were given natural honeybee venom once a day for 5 consecutive days. Acupoints of Sam-li, Jok-su and Pal-ja were stung by the natural honey bees. In control group, 46 pigs were intramuscularly injected with a standard dosage of penicillin G (400,000 IU/kg of body weight) once a day for 5 consecutive days. On day 5 following bee venom therapy, 73.9% of control pigs and 86.2% of pigs in treated group recovered from arthritis. Bee acupuncture therapy did not show any side effects such as allergy, intoxication, hemorrhage, or infection. It might be concluded that honeybee venom therapy was effective in controlling of pig with arthritis.

Complex of mulberry extract (CME) is composed of extracts of mulberry (Morus alba L.) fruit, mulberry leaves and black beans (Glycine max (L.) Merr.). In this study, we investigated prevention effects of CME on degenerative arthritis. The $SC_{50}$ value of DPPH radical scavenging by CME was $158.49{\pm}11.35{\mu}/mL$. We found that CME significantly reduced the production of nitric oxide (NO) and protein expression of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) in RAW 264.7 cells which were activated by LPS. Experiments using animal model of degenerative arthritis showed that CME (400 mg/kg body weight) inhibited the production of TNF-${\alpha}$ (77.5%) and IL-$1{\beta}$ (95.0%). Furthermore, it was observed that CME reduced to 85.9% of paw edema induced by carrageenan. These results suggest that CME could improve degenerative arthritis.

Piroxicam is known to be a new nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug which has anti-inflammatory, antiedema, antigranuloma and analgesic activities through the mechanism of inhibition of prostaglandin synthetase. Clinical survey for piroxicam was carried cut on 40 cases of rheumatoid arthritis and 30 cases of degenerative arthritis who visited University Hospital from Feb. to June, 1979. Following results could be obtained: 1) In rheumatoid and degenerative arthritis, the effect of piroxicam was significant in decrease of joint pain, shortening of duration of morning stiffness, decrease in number of swollen joints, improvement of joint stiffness, decrease of E.S.R., increase of mean grip strength and decrease of articular index. 2) Side effects, almost all in G-I troubles were encountered in 6 cases in 40 cases of rheumatoid arthritis and 4 cases in 30 cases of degenerative arthritis.

We report a case of fluoroscopy-guided intraarticular steroid injection for sternoclavicular joint (SCJ) arthritis caused by limited cutaneous systemic sclerosis (SSc). A 50-year-old woman diagnosed with limited cutaneous SSc presented with swelling and pain in the right SCJ. MRI revealed signs of inflammation consistent with right-sided sternoclavicular joint arthritis. After the failure of oral medications, we performed fluoroscopy-guided injection in this region. She reported complete resolution of her symptoms at 4 and 12-week follow-ups. This outcome suggests that a fluoroscopy-guided SCJ injection might be a safe and successful treatment option for sternoclavicular joint arthritis.

Objective : This case report aims to show the effect of Bekhogainsam-tang on Overactive Bladder and Rheumatoid arthritis. The patient was diagnosed with Yangmyung-byung based on Shanghanlun provisions. Methods : According to Diagnostic system based on Shanghanlun provisions, the patient was diagnosed with Yangmyung-byng and has been unusual dietary habits. So she treated with Bekhogainsam-tang decoction for 75 days. We evaluated the results of treatment by Overactive Bladder Symptom Score(OABSS), Modified Overactive Bladder Validated 8-question Screener(OAB-V8), and Rheumatoid Arthritis Pain Score(RAPS). Results : After taking Bekhogainsam-tang decoction for 75 days, the patient's symptoms and OABSS was decreased from 20 to 11, OAB-V8 was from 42 to 20, and RAPS was from 130 to 63. Conclusions : This case report showed an effectiveness of using Bekhogainsam-tang according to Diagnositic system based on Shanghanlun provisions on Overactive Bladder and Rheumatoid Arthritis.

Twenty seven plant extracts were selected on the basis of ancient literature search for rheurnatoid arthritis or similar syndrome. Methanol extract of each plant was prepared and administered orally to rats everyday at a dose of 200 mg/kg/day. Experimental arthritis was induced by subplantar injection of heat-killed Mycobacterium butyricum to right hind paw of rats. This treatment provoked swelling of the treated paw in two phases, acute primary swelling and secondary arthritic swelling. An inhibition of secondary swelling was considered to be antiarthritic activity. Several plant methanol extracts such as Akebia quinata (caulis), Ephedla sinica (herba) and 5ophorae subprostratd (radix) were found to show significant inhibitory activity against secondary swelling at the dose tested. Our results strongly suggested an antiarthritic potential of these plant extracts.

A 2-day-old Thoroughbred foal weighing 58 kg was admitted to the Equine Hospital of Korea Racing Authority (KRA) Jeju Stud Farm with clinical signs including loss of suckling behavior and barking. Neonatal encephalopathy (NE) was diagnosed based on history and typical clinical signs of NE. The foal seemed to recover in 5 days of intensive care and treatment but then was complicated with the septic arthritis of left hock joint on the $6^{th}$ day of admission. A course of aggressive systemic antimicrobial therapy with joint lavage for 8 days was conducted and the foal was fully recovered and discharged. The follow up on the patient after 2 years revealed that the patient achieved a great success as a racehorse without any unexpected sequel. This report describes a course of NE complicated with septic arthritis in a foal and the clinical outcome of the intensive care and treatment in detail. To our knowledge, this is the first report which describes NE complicated with septic arthritis in a foal in Republic of Korea.
