  • ART (Adaptive Resonance Theory [1]) neural network and its variations perform non-hierarchical clustering by unsupervised learning. We propose a scheme "arboART" for hierarchical clustering by using several ART1.5-SSS networks. It classifies multidimensional vectors as a cluster tree, and finds features of clusters. The Basic idea of arboART is to use the prototype formed in an ART network as an input to other ART network that has looser distance criteria (Ishihara, et al., [2,3]). By sending prototype vectors made by ART to one after another, many small categories are combined into larger and more generalized categories. We can draw a dendrogram using classification records of sample and categories. We have confirmed its ability using standard test data commonly used in pattern recognition community. The clustering result is better than traditional computing methods, on separation of outliers, smaller error (diameter) of clusters and causes no chaining. This methodology is applied to Kansei evaluation experiment data analysis.

Neural Network-Based Sensor Fault Diagnosis in the Gas Monitoring System (가스모니터링 시스템에서의 신경회로망 기반 센서고장진단)

  • In this paper, we propose neural network-based fault diagnosis method to diagnose of sensor in the gas monitoring system. In the proposed method, using thermal modulation of operating temperature of sensor, the signal patterns are extracted from the voltage of load resistance. Also, ART2 neural network is used for fault isolation. The performance and effectiveness of the proposed ART2 neural network based fault diagnosis method are shown by simulation results using real data obtained from the gas monitoring system.

  • This study investigates the feasibility of the real time detection of tool breadage in face milling operation. The proposed methodology using an ART2 neural network overcomes a cumbersome task in terms of the learning or determining a threshold value. The features taken in the researchare the AR parameters modelled from a RLS, and those are proven to be good features for tool breakage from experiments. From the results of the off line application, we can conclude that an ART2 neural network can be well applied to the clustering of tool states in real time regardless of the unsupervised learning.

  • This paper proposes content-based image retrieval system with fuzzy ART neural network algorithm. Retrieving large database of image data, the clustering is essential for fast retrieval. However, it is difficult to cluster huge image data pertinently, Because current retrieval methods using similarities have several problems like low accuracy of retrieving and long retrieval time, a solution is necessary to complement these problems. This paper presents a content-based image retrieval system with neural network in order to reinforce abovementioned problems. The retrieval system using fuzzy ART algorithm normalizes color and texture as feature values of input data between 0 and 1, and then it runs after clustering the input data. The implemental result with 300 image data shows retrieval accuracy of approximately 87%.

  • The application of neural network for fault dection of cutting force in turning was introduced. This monitoring system consist of a RBF predicton model and a ART-1 pattern classifier. RBF prediction model predict a cutting force signal. Prediction error of predictor is used for a input vector of ART-1 pattern classifier. Prediction error could be successfully performed to fault signal monitoring of ART-1 pattern classifier.

  • We propose a hierarchical architecture of ART2 Network for performance improvement and fast pattern classification model using fitness selection. This hierarchical network creates coarse clusters as first ART2 network layer by unsupervised learning, then creates fine clusters of the each first layer as second network layer by supervised learning. First, it compares input pattern with each clusters of first layer and select candidate clusters by fitness measure. We design a optimized fitness function for pruning clusters by measuring relative distance ratio between a input pattern and clusters. This makes it possible to improve speed and accuracy. Next, it compares input pattern with each clusters connected with selected clusters and finds winner cluster. Finally it classifies the pattern by a label of the winner cluster. Results of our experiments show that the proposed method is more accurate and fast than other approaches.

On-line Recognition of Chinese Characters Based on ART-l Neural Network (ART-1 신경망을 이용한 온라인 한자 인식)

  • In this paper, we propose an on-line recognition system of chinese characters using an adaptive resonance theory-1(ART-1) neural network. Strokes, primitive components of chinese characters are usually warped into a cursive form and classifying them is very difficult. To deal with such cursive strokes, we use an ART-1 neural network that has the following advantages: (1) it automatically assembles similar patterns together to form classes in a self-organized manner: (2) it directly accesses the recognition codes corresponding to binary input patterns after self-stabilizing; (3) it doesn't tends to get trapped in local minima, or globally incorrect solutions. A database for character recognition also dynamically constructed with generalized character lists, and a new character can be included simply by adding a new sequence to the list. Character recognition is achieved by traversing the chinese datbase with a sequence of recognized strokes and positional relations between the strokes. To verify the performance of the system. We tested it for 1800 daily-used basic chinese second per character. This results suggest that the proposed system is pertinent to be put into practical use.

Recognition of Container Identifiers Using 8-directional Contour Tracking Method and Refined RBF Network

  • Generally, it is difficult to find constant patterns on identifiers in a container image, since the identifiers are not normalized in color, size, and position, etc. and their shapes are damaged by external environmental factors. This paper distinguishes identifier areas from background noises and removes noises by using an ART2-based quantization method and general morphological information on the identifiers such as color, size, ratio of height to width, and a distance from other identifiers. Individual identifier is extracted by applying the 8-directional contour tracking method to each identifier area. This paper proposes a refined ART2-based RBF network and applies it to the recognition of identifiers. Through experiments with 300 container images, the proposed algorithm showed more improved accuracy of recognizing container identifiers than the others proposed previously, in spite of using shorter training time.

The Modified ART1 Network using Multiresolution Mergence : Mixed Character Recognition (다중 해상도 병합을 이용한 수정된 적응 공명 이론 신경망: 혼합 문자 인식 적용)

  • As Information Technology growing, the character recognition application plays an important role in the ubiquitous environment. In this paper, we propose the Modified ART1 network using Multiresolution Mergence to the problems of the character recognition. The approach is based on the unsupervised neural network and multiresolution. In order to decrease noises and to increase the classification rate of the characters, we propose the multiresolution mergence strategy using both high resolution and low resolution information. Also, to maximize the effect of multiresolution mergence, we use a modified ART1 method with a different similarity measure. Our experimental results show that the classification rate of character is quite increased as well as the performance of the propose algorithm in conjunction with the similarity measure is improved comparing to the conventional ART1 algorithm in this application.

  • This paper proposes an efficient recognition method of car license plate from the car images by using both the dynamical thresholding and the neural network with enhanced learning algorithm. The car license plate is extracted by the dynamical thresholding based on the structural features and the density rates. Each characters and numbers from the p]ate is also extracted by the contour tracking algorithm. The enhanced neural network is proposed for recognizing them, which has the algorithm of combining the modified ART1 and the supervised learning method. The proposed method has applied to the real-world car images. The simulation results show that the proposed method has better the extraction rates than the methods with information of the gray brightness and the RGB, respectively. And the proposed method has better recognition performance than the conventional backpropagation neural network.
