  • As the wireless communication technologies are being studied for application to marine communication networks in a fusion of marine industries and IT technology, this paper proposes a HARQ-ARQ interaction scheme for reliable communication between the smart ships. Moreover, this paper evaluates the performance of the HARQ-ARQ interaction schemes through the computer simulation. In the HARQ-ARQ interaction scheme for marine network systems, as a HARQ acknowledgement is implicitly utilized as an ARQ acknowledgement. Hence, the HARQ-ARQ interaction scheme can reduce the packet delay. However, the HARQ-ARQ interaction scheme has problems caused by the error of HARQ feedback messages. Hence, this paper considers the effect of error of HARQ feedback messages on the performance of the HARQ-ARQ interaction scheme, in marine network systems. The simulation results show that the HARQ-ARQ interaction scheme can improve the delay performance of the ships in the marine network systems.

  • In this paper, we analyze the mean queuing delay of selective-repeat automatic repeat request (SR-ARQ) protocol with the finite retransmission persistence. The retransmission persistence means the willingness of the protocol to retransmit a lost (or corrupted) packet to ensure reliable packet delivery across a lossy link. According to the retransmission persistence, SR-ARQ protocols have a different performance in terms of both packet delay and link reliability. So far, however, there is no serious study in the effect of the retransmission persistence on the SR-ARQ performance. We present a simple M/G/1 queuing model for the SR-ARQ protocol with the finite retransmission persistence by using the ideal SR-ARQ approximation. The mean queuing delay is obtained from the queuing model and verified its accuracy through the simulation results using the OPNET simulator. Both the analytical predictions and simulation results clearly show the effect of retransmission persistence on the queuing delay of the SR-ARQ protocol in various network conditions: packet loss rate and traffic condition over a wireless link.

  • High quality and high speed multimedia services will be required in the next generation mobile communications. To satisfy these services, powerful error correction techniques are used. ARQ(Auto Repeat Request) techniques, aspects of the throughput, and FEC(Forward Error Correct) techniques have disadvantages in terms of reliability. H-ARQ(Hybrid Auto Repeat Request) systems have been studied extensively as a solution of these disadvantages. In this paper introduce double layer coding and H-ARQ type, proposed H-ARQ system using double layer coding methods. Simulate BER performance and throughput. And we suggest that according to channel condition suitable H-ARQ type.

  • In this paper, we evaluated the performance of 4 types of ARQ algorithms that have been adopted to offer reliable transmission between MAC layers. First of all, we implemented IEEE 802.16 ARQ algorithms with NS-2 network simulator and then evaluated the performances in various channel states. We used two performance measures to evaluate those performances. First, we used the total number of ARQ block in bytes that have been received without error. Second, we used ACK_Efficiency that is newly defined in this paper. From the results of simulation, we could be aware that each ARQ algorithm has different performance in a various channel states. For improving the transmission data rate in a specific channel state, we have to choose the right ACK interval as well as a suitable ARQ algorithm.

  • In this paper, the throughput performance of an ARQ scheme is analyzed with noisy feedback channel, in order to exactly analysis for performance of an ARQ scheme. An ARQ mechanism is presented by state diagram, and the throughput of an ARQ scheme is mathematically derived using generation function for a signal flow graph. The channel is modeled by the Nakagami-m fading channel which is distributed over far and wide, and the throughput performance of an ARQ scheme, which is applied in BPSK and BFSK systems, according to feedback gain and fading index m is analyzed through computer simulation. In the results, It is shown conformed that the throughput of an ARQ scheme decreased according to the increase of the noise for feedback channel, but it increased according to the increase of the feedback gain and fading index m. Also, it is shown that the throughput of an ARQ scheme using BPSK system is superior to BFSK system because of the difference of bit error probability between BPSK and BFSK systems.

  • In this paper, the effects of HARQ feedback error are evaluated in IEEE 802.16m system when the HARQ and ARQ interactions that utilize the HARQ feedback information is used. Also, the HARQ and ARQ interaction scheme considering HARQ feedback errors are proposed. The HARQ and ARQ interaction scheme improve the system throughput by using the HARQ feedback information instead of the ARQ feedback message, which reduce retransmission time. However, errors in the HARQ feedback information generate severe performance degradation. Especially, the local NAK errors between HARQ feedback error critically degrade the performance, because the local NAK errors lead the loss of ARQ blocks. We propose a channel state-based schemes for HARQ and ARQ interactions to mitigate the throughput degradation due to HARQ feedback errors. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme improves the throughput and the delay performance.

  • A Study on the ARQ scheme of data error control is important for more reliable information transmission. Since performance difference is large by the long transmission delay time in satellite communication, the performances of SR ARQ and conventional type-I hybrid ARQ with fixed code rate are investigated by using the parameters of packet length, channel capacity, BER, and transmission delay time especially. BCH code is used in type-I hybrid ARQ for FEC method. This paper presents the throughput analyses according to such various parameters as BCH code rate, window size, data rate and round-trip delay time. Especially we derive a performance equation of type-I hybrid ARQ with the factor of the transmission delay time using the equation of SAW ARQ. Also, the performance of type-I hybrid ARQ specially considering transmission delay time is analyzed through numerical analysis and computer simulation so we can get a important characteristics variation.

  • Most studies of the ARQ schemes are conducted under the limited error rate of a fairly stationary channel. In nonstationary channel, error rates vary considerably and variety of error rate is wide. This paper proposes an effective Stop-and-Wait ARQ scheme which estimates the channel state in a simple manner based on the received acknowledgement messages, and can adaptively switch its operation mode in a channel where error rates vary slowly. It provides higher throughput than other comparable Stop-and-Wait ARQ schemes under a wide variety of error rate conditions.

  • In this paper wepropose a sub-block retransmission scheme for ARQ and hybrid ARQ schemes. When the cannel is quiet the sub-block retransmission scheme behaves like a conventional ARQ or hybrid ARQ scheme. As the channel is becoming noisy, the data block is dvided into small sub-blocks for transmission. Each sub-block is encoded for error control by an apprpriate shortened code and the code length of the shortened code is being adaptive to the corresponding channel BER. the reeived block is checked for errors sub-block by sub-block. The propsoed sub-block retransmission scheme provides improved throughput over conventional schemes by retransmitting only the naked sub-blocks in the occurrence of errors. An example of transferring ATM cells is considered for simulation.

  • In this paper, we present hybrid ARQ techniques to improve the throughput performance in high speed packet transmission such as Internet or multimedia services in Hospital. In order to evaluate the performance of the three different types of hybrid ARQ schemes, systemized link level simulations based on WWW traffic model are considered. In this paper, we also consider the simulated performance for an average link throughput and a normalized packet delay to compare the hybrid ARQ with link adaptation scheme in GPRS.
