  • Recent some SoC FPGA Releases that integrate ARM processor and FPGA fabric show better performance compared to the ASIC SoC used in typical embedded image processing system. In this study, using the above advantages, we implement a SoC FPGA-based Real-Time Object Recognition and Tracking System. In our system, the video input and output, image preprocessing process, and background subtraction processing were implemented in FPGA logics. And the object recognition and tracking processes were implemented in ARM processor-based programs. Our system provides the processing performance of 5.3 fps for the SVGA video input. This is about 79 times faster processing power than software approach based on the Nios II Soft-core processor, and about 4 times faster than approach based the HPS processor. Consequently, if the object recognition and tracking system takes a design structure combined with the FPGA logic and HPS processor-based processes of recent SoC FPGA Releases, then the real-time processing is possible because the processing speed is improved than the system that be handled only by the software approach.

  • As the usage of mobile devices becomes diverse, a number of attacks on Android also have increased. Among the attacks, Android can be compromised by flashing a new image of compromised Android Linux. In order to solve this problem, we propose SeBo (Secure Boot System) which prevents compromised Android Linux by guaranteeing secure boot environment for mobile devices based on ARM TrustZone architecture. SeBo checks the hash value of the Android Linux image before the Android Linux executes. SeBo detects all the attacks within 5 seconds. Moreover, since SeBo only trusts the Secure Bootloader from Secure World, SeBo can reduce the additional overhead of checking the Normal Bootloader from Normal World.

  • Laboratory works for embedded system courses are usually performed with hardware based experimental kits that equipped with an embedded board and software development tools. Hardware-based kits have demerits such as high initial setup cost, burdensome maintenance, inadaptability to industry evolution, and restricted educational outcomes. This paper proposes using virtual experimental environments to overcome the demerits of hardware-based kits and describes the design and implementation of a simulation-based virtual experimental kit. With ARM's ARMulator, we developed the kit by adding hardware IPs and user interface modules for peripherals. The developed kit is verified with an experimental program that uses all the augmented software modules. We also ported MicroC/OS-II on the virtual experimental kit for real-time OS experiments.

  • This paper is to enhance a color image running in the PXA255 ARM processor based on embedded linux environments. Retinex is one of the representative algorithm for image enhancement in the previous research. However, retinex is not suitable the run on the embedded system because of its long processing time. So, we proposed the image enhancement algorithm for embedded system, with less quantity of operation and the effect equivalent to retinex. To achieve this goal, we propose and implement the image enhancement algorithm, which utilizes the image formation model and gamma correction to be effective in a back-light and dark image. The proposed algorithm converts the color space from RGB to HSV, and then V and S channels are processed. In order to optimize the proposed method in the PXA255 ARM processor, quantity of calculation is reduced. The performance of the proposed algorithm was evaluated through qualitative method and quantitative method. The results show that brightness and contrast are improved with less quantity of operation.

  • The ubiquitous flexible operating system (UbiFOS) is a real-time operating system designed for cost-conscious, low-power, small to medium-sized embedded systems such as cellular phones, MP3 players, and wearable computers. It offers efficient real-time operating system services like multi-task scheduling, memory management, inter-task communication and synchronization, and timers while keeping the kernel size to just a few to tens of kilobytes. For flexibility, UbiFOS uses various task scheduling policies such as cyclic time-slice (round-robin), priority-based preemption with round-robin, priority-based preemptive, and bitmap. When there are less than 64 tasks, bitmap scheduling is the best policy. The scheduling overhead is under 9 ${\mu}s$ on the ARM926EJ processor. UbiFOS also provides the flexibility for user to select from several inter-task communication techniques according to their applications. We ported UbiFOS on the ARM9-based DVD player (20 kB), the Calm16-based MP3 player (under 7 kB), and the ATmega128-based ubiquitous sensor node (under 6 kB). Also, we adopted the dynamic power management (DPM) scheme. Comparative experimental results show that UbiFOS could save energy up to 30% using DPM.

  • With increase of concern about the Ubiquitous application, the necessity of the computer system which is miniaturized is becoming larger. The ARM processor is showing a high share from embedded system market. In this paper, ideal method for RTD-1000 controller construction and development is described using ARM microcontroller. Existing RTD-1000 measures distance of disconnection or defect of sensing casket by measuring receiving reflected wave which was sent via copper wire inside the leaking sensing rod. Using this RTD-1000, leakage and breakage of water and oil pipe can be sensed and it reports damage results to the networks. But, existing RTD-1000 wastes hardware resources much and costs a great deal to installation. Also, it needs a cooling device because the heating problem, and has some problem of the secondary memory unit such as the hard disk. So, long tenn maintenance has some problems in the outside install place. In this paper, for the resolving the problem of RTD-1000, RTD-1000A embedded system based on ARM is proposed and simulated.

  • The purpose of this paper is to present how to implement Segment_LCD display using SoC design. The SoC design is achieved by using an ARM_based Excalibur device. The Excalibur device offers an outstanding embedded development platform with ARM922T and FPA. The design in the Excailbur device uses the embedded AR띤 Processor core and the AMBA high-performance bus (AHH) to write to a memory-mapped slave peripheral in the FPGA portion of the device. Here, Segment_LCD is one kind of memory-mapped slave peripherals. In order to Implement the Segment_LCD display based on SoC design, four steps are fellowed. At first, IP modules are made by using Verilog HDL. Secondly, the ARM processor of the Excalibur is programmed using C in ADS (ARM Developer Suite). And in the third step, the whole system is simulated and verified. At last, modules are downloaded to SoCMaster kit. Both Quartus II software and ModelSim5.5e software are the key software tools during the design.

  • This paper focuses on a real-time hardware processing by implementing the ARM Cortex-M4 based embedded system, using a conversion algorithm from a muscular sense to both visual and auditory elements, which recognizes rotations of a human body, directional changes and motion amounts out of human senses. As an input method of muscular sense, AHRS(Attitude Heading Reference System) was used to acquire roll, pitch and yaw values in real time. These three input values were converted into three elements of HSI color model such as intensity, hue and saturation, respectively. Final color signals were acquired by converting HSI into RGB color model. In addition, Three input values of muscular sense were converted into three elements of sound such as octave, scale and velocity, which were synthesized to give an output sound using MIDI(Musical Instrument Digital Interface). The analysis results of both output color and sound signals revealed that input signals of muscular sense were correctly converted into both color and sound in real time by the proposed conversion method.
