Mummification, host selection and biological characteristics of primary parasitoids and hyperparasitoids in the soybean aphid, Aphis glycines, were studied. The soybean aphid mummies which were infected by primary parasitoids or hyherparasitoids were collected at Taejon area from May to September in 1987 Primary parasitoids and hyperparasitoids were emerged 27.1% and 50.3%, from 177 collected mummies. respectively Aphidius cingulatus, Ephedrus persicae and Ephedres plagiator could be effective primary parasitoids against the soybean aphid. Among the hyperparasitoids, Asaphes unlgaris and Ardilea conuexa might be dominant species to primary parasitoids of the soybean aphid. Charips brasicae was recorded for the first time in Korea E.plagiator was less parasitized than any other primary parasitoid by hyperparasitoids. E. plagiator might be higher than A. cingulatus in the ability of prarsitism. Life span of hyperparasitoid and primary parasitoid was estimated to be 3~29 days and 1~4 days, respectively.
In order to evaluate the fluctuation of soybean aphid (Aphis glycines Matsumura) population, six leading soybean cultivars were planted on five different planting dates with three plant spacings. The survey of aphid population and climatical condition were made from June through September in 1978. According to the differences of planting dates and plant spacings the soybean aphid populations were varied, and varietal response to the aphid was significantly different. Counting of aphid infestation on top third trifoliolate leaf seemed to be efficient for the estimation of soybean aphid population.

Aphids are one of the most destructive pests in crop production such as pepper, cucumber, and eggplants. The importance of entomopathogenic fungi as alternative pest control agents is increasing. Conidia of entomopathogenic fungi are influenced by environmental conditions, such as temperature and relative humidity, and cause slow and fluctuating mortality. These factors have prevented wider application and use of biocontrol agents. For investigation of means of mitigation of such problems, we conducted bioassays with 47 fungal culture filtrates in order to evaluate the potential of secondary metabolites produced by entomopathogenic fungi for use in aphid control. Among 47 culture filtrates cultured potato dextrose broth, filtrate of Beauveria bassiana Bb08 showed the highest mortality (78%) against green peach aphid three days after treatments. Filtrate of Bb08 cultured in Adamek's medium showed higher toxicity as 100% to third instar nymphs of the aphid compared with seven other filtrates cultured in different broths amended with colloidal chitin or oil. The culture filtrates and fungal cultures from media amended with colloidal chitin or oil had lower control efficacies than filtrates without these additives in three different media. These results indicate that the fungal culture fluid or culture filtrate of B. bassiana Bb08 cultured in Adamek's medium has potential for development as a mycopesticide for aphid control.
Differences in susceptibility of several organophosphate, carbamate and pyrethroid insecticides to three species of aphids were determined by leaf-dipping and spray methods. The insects tested were the apterous adults of the green peach aphid (Myzus persicae), cotton aphid (Aphis gossypii) and soybean aphid (Aphis glycines). The comparison of $LC_{50}$ levels was indicated as follows; (1) The susceptibility to insecticides tested were greatly varied with the test methods. (2) The leaf dipping method is more recommendable than the spray method for insecticide screening with aphids. It was easier, more accurate and less variable than the latter. (3) The susceptibility to insecticides was greatly varied between the aphid species. Soybean aphid was more susceptible to the insecticides than green peach aphid and cotton aphid. Exceptionally, pirimicarb was not effective on the cotton aphid.
Aphid is a typical vector that transfers various kinds of viruses to potatoes. Therefore, it is very important to control aphids moving into potato fields. We investigated the seasonal movement pattern of aphids and its virus transmission rates mainly in the three seed potato production regions at highland in Gangwon-do, Korea. In addition, we identified the aphid species with over-wintering eggs collected from barks or twigs of total 57 tree species around potato fields in winter season. The peak time of summer and winter migration of aphid was at the mid-June and the early October, respectively. A 2.8% of total aphid trapped in yellow water-pan trap was turned out PLRV-borne, and the virus transmission rate was 15.4% by Myzus persicae and 9.1% by Macrosiphum euphorbiae. PLRV-borne aphids started to flow in from the late May, and virus transmission rate of aphid trapped in mid-June was the highest with 10.4%. Totally 14 species of aphid eggs wintered in the 17 species of trees including Acer pictum subsp. mono and Acer pseudosieboldianum at the 11 sites. In particular, because it is not certain that Betula platyphylla var. japonica and Yamatocallis hirayamae do transmit potato virus, but they over-wintered in host plants distributed over a wide area, further research on transmission ability is necessary.
The green peach aphid(Myzus pericae Sulzer) was selected over 20 generations with cypermethrin and pirmicarb, respectively. The resulting resistant strains were tested to inverting-ate the development of insecticide resistance and cross-resistance to some insecticides in the laboratory. The development of insecticide resistance against green peach aphid at the 20th selected generation was greatly varied with the insecticides: 20.5 fold for cypermethrin and 3.2 fold for pirimicarb compared with the parent strain. The cypermethrin selected strain exhibited cross resistance to acephate and pirimicarb, and pirimicarb selected strain to acephate and cypermethrin, respectively. Demeton-S-methyl, however, has not been shown cross-resistance by the selected strains.
Fifty potato cultivars were screened for potato aphid, Macrosiphum euphorbiae Thomas infestation degree in the field. Aphid honey dew secretion and contents of foliar substances(glycoalkaloids, total nitrogen, Ca, K and Mg) of the cultivars were measured in the laboratory to analyze the correlation between infestation degrees and those factors. The number of aphids ranged from 4.1 to 31.4 per five leaves. The lower density(less than 5 aphids) was found on cvs. Jidose, Recent, and Sebago. The aphid secreted highest(40.3 droplets) and lowest(15.7 droplets) honeydew on cvs. Jopoong and Anco, respectively. Degree of infestation is positively correlated to glycoalkaloids and total nitrogen contents of the potato leaf.

The turnip aphid is a worldwide pest, damaging mainly to crucifers. In order to understand the life parameters of Lipaphis erysimi for the eventual goal of control, the developmental periods, survival rates, lifespan, and fecundity of the species were investigated under five temperature regimes ($15^{\circ}C-35^{\circ}C$). Furthermore, the efficacy of several environment-friendly agricultural materials (EFAMs) that are on the market was subjected to test in order to obtain further accurate information. The developmental period of the turnip aphid nymph was longest at $15^{\circ}C$ as 16.9 days, shortened as temperature goes up to $25^{\circ}C$ (5.4 days), and then somewhat increased at $30^{\circ}C$ (5.9 days), suggesting that the most efficient temperature for nymphal development could be around $25^{\circ}C$. Mortality of the nymphal turnip aphid was obvious at $35^{\circ}C$, whereas it was minimal at other temperature schemes. The longevity of adults shortened as temperature goes up to $30^{\circ}C$. In particular, the maximum lifespan for adults continued for 55 days at $15^{\circ}C$, but shortened to 21 days at $30^{\circ}C$. The total fecundity was 35.7 at $15^{\circ}C$, 81 at $20^{\circ}C$, 64.2 at $25^{\circ}C$, and 6.6 individuals at $30^{\circ}C$, showing the highest fecundity at $20^{\circ}C$. After the turnip aphids were successfully stabilized in indoor environment the insecticidal activity was tested and mortality was determined 12, 24, 36, and 48 hrs after EFAMs are treated. Several on-the-market EFAMs showed more than 90% of insecticidal activity within 24 hrs or 48 hrs, but a few showed less than 90% activity, signifying importance of selection of proper EFAMs.

BACKGROUND: Yuza seed by-product has been produced in a large amount from the agricultural farms in the southern area of Korea. It has been mostly abandoned after commercial process for the production of juice, jam and tea. The study on the reuse of the yuza seed by-product has received much attention as a bio-resource material for the production of active compound in agriculture. METHODS AND RESULTS: Insecticidal rhamnolipid-producing Pseudomonas sp. EP-3 was grown in mineral salt media with the yuza seed by-product at 2, 20, 50 and 100 g/L. The growth of EP-3 was accompanied by a increase in insecticidal activity against green peach aphid. The highest insecticidal activity was observed when EP-3 was grown in the medium containing 50 g/L of the seed sample, producing approximately 996 mg/L of rhamnolipid at 96 h. Palmitic acid, stearic acid, oleic acid and linoleic acid were determined as the major fatty acids of the seed sample. The EP-3 cultures grown on the fatty acid mixture extracted from the seed sample showed a aphid mortality similar to that of cultures grown on the seed sample. The EP-3 cultures grown on 50 g/L of the seed sample showed aphid mortality more than 90% under greenhouse conditions. CONCLUSION: This study suggested that the yuza seed by-product may be used as a renewable material for microbial production of rhamnolipid against green peach aphid.

Concerns of entomopathogenic fungi as alternative pest control agents are increasing even though chemical pesticides have been used as the main control agents for pests and diseases in crop production. This study was conducted to test the influence of fungicides and insecticides on an isolate of Lecanicillium attenuatum that was reported to have the pathogenicity against cotton aphid, because fungicides and/or insecticides can apply with mycopesticides simultaneous, before and/or after. Fungicides fenbuconazole+thiram and propineb inhibited the spore germination and mycelial growth of L. attenuatum CS625; dimethomorph and procymidone did not affect spore germination or mycelial growth. The insecticide abamectin, deltamethrin, imidachropride, and spinosad had no detrimental effects on spore germination or mycelial growth. Therefore, these results demonstrated that careful selection of pesticides and fungicides can be applied to the integrated pest and disease control with microbial pesticide.
