  • To simulate a high altitude for rocket at sea level, the test facility should provide a sufficiently low pressure environment. Center Body Diffuser(CBD) is those applied for high altitude simulation test facility. To elucidate the flow characteristics of center body diffuser with various the center body location, numerical analyses using ANSYS FLUENT were performed. The result of this study is deemed to be valuable as a data base for the operation of the Center Body Diffuser.

  • During the operation of a hydro turbine the fluid mechanical pressure loading on the turbine blades provides the driving torque on the turbine shaft. This fluid loading results in a structural load on the component which in turn causes the turbine blade to deflect. Classically, these mechanical stresses and deflections are calculated by means of finite element analysis (FEA) which applies the pressure distribution on the blade surface calculated by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) as a major boundary condition. Such an approach can be seen as a one-way coupled simulation of the fluid structure interaction (FSI) problem. In this analysis the reverse influence of the deformation on the fluid is generally neglected. Especially in axial machines the blade deformation can result in a significant impact on the turbine performance. The present paper analyzes this influence by means of fully two-way coupled FSI simulations of a propeller turbine utilizing two different approaches. The configuration has been simulated by coupling the two commercial solvers ANSYS CFX for the fluid mechanical simulation with ANSYS Classic for the structure mechanical simulation. A detailed comparison of the results for various blade stiffness by means of changing Young's Modulus are presented. The influence of the blade deformation on the runner discharge and performance will be discussed and shows for the configuration investigated no significant influence under normal structural conditions. This study also highlights that a two-way coupled fluid structure interaction simulation of a real engineering configuration is still a challenging task for today's commercially available simulation tools.

  • The dynamic simulation of machine tools and motion control systems has been widely used for optimization, design verification, control design, etc. There are three main streams in dynamic simulation: structural dynamic analysis based onthe finite element method, dynamic motion analysis based on equations of motion, and control system analysis based on transfer functions. Generally, one of these dynamic simulation methods is chosen and employed for specific purposes. In this study, an integrated dynamic simulation is introduced, in which the structure, motion, and control dynamics are combined together. Commercially well-known software is used in the integrated dynamic simulation: ANSYS, ADAMS, and Matlab/Simulink. Using the integrated dynamic simulation, the dynamics of a magnetic bearing stage is analyzed and the causes of oscillation and noise are identified. A controller design for suppressing a flexible dynamic mode is carried out and verified through the integrated dynamic simulation.

  • In this paper, the 5kW and 50kW vertical axis wind turbines were studied using the ANSYS flow analysis simulation program. The 5 kW vertical shaft wind turbine has 30 units of the number of main blades and sub-blades and the electrical characteristics were analyzed by changing the tip speed ratio (TSR) from 0.2 to 06. A 50kW vertical axis wind turbine was designed based on the electrical characteristics of a 5kW vertical axis wind turbine. When the tip speed ratio was 0.5, the 5 kW wind power generation showed the maximum output of 9.5 kW and the efficiency of 0.28. The calculation of the power current(Ip) and the power voltage(Ep) show that, as the tip speed ratio increases, the power current(Ip) decreases and the power voltage(Ep) increases. And even if the tip speed ratio was changed, 5kW wind power generation was measured for output of 5 kW or higher. When the tip speed ratio was changed from 0.3 to 0.6, 50 kW wind power generation was output more than 50 kW. When the tip speed ratio of 50kW wind power generation was 0.4, the output was 58.37 [kW] and the efficiency was 0.318, and it was confirmed that the proposed 50kW wind power generation satisfies the design conditions.

  • This paper examines the suitability of using the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) tools, ANSYS-CFX, as an initial analysis tool for predicting the drag and propulsion performance (thrust and torque) of a concept underwater vehicle design. In order to select an appropriate thruster that will achieve the required speed of the Underwater Disk Robot (UDR), the ANSYS-CFX tools were used to predict the drag force of the UDR. Vertical Planar Motion Mechanism (VPMM) test simulations (i.e. pure heaving and pure pitching motion) by CFD motion analysis were carried out with the CFD software. The CFD results reveal the distribution of hydrodynamic values (velocity, pressure, etc.) of the UDR for these motion studies. Finally, CFD bollard pull test simulations were performed and compared with the experimental bollard pull test results conducted in a model basin. The experimental results confirm the suitability of using the ANSYS-CFX tools for predicting the behavior of concept vehicles early on in their design process.

  • CAE has been settled down to an indispensable tool for the simulation of a mechanical system according to the development of computer-aided analysis rapidly. Particularly finite element programs have advanced to the one of most valuable things in the filed of CAE due to the remarkable progress in the implementation. But since this analysis tool mostly provides the result of the analysis, it cannot satisfy designers who are seeking for information to improve their designs. Therefore, design sensitivity analysis or optimization module has been incorporated into commercial FEA programs to satisfy the desire of designers since 1990s. Design sensitivity analysis is to compute the rate of change of response with respected to design variable. Design sensitivity analysis is classfied into static design sensitivity analysis, Eigenvalue design sensitivity analysis and dynamic design sensitivity analysis. In this research, it will be presented to nonlinear static design sensitivity analysis formulation and nonlinear static design sensitivity analysis external module based ANSYS have been developed and illustrated an example to verify the developed module.

  • In this study, the characteristics of the propagation of dam-break wave through a porous structure in a water tank is numerically analyzed by using the three-dimensional numerical model (ANSYS CFX model). As results of comparison between the existing measured and simulated water depth distributions in and around a porous structure, the agreement is relatively well satisfied. Moreover, for the case of the presence in part of a porous structure in a water tank, the three-dimensional flow structure is numerically analyzed In general, compared with in the area with a porous structure, the abrupt variation of water depth occurs in the area without a porous structure. It is shown that the porous structure can play a role to decrease the abrupt variation of water depth.
