Various different types of joining between High Tc superconducting(HTS) tapes were prepared and current-voltage(I-V) characteristic curves were investigated at 77 K, liquid nitrogen temperature. Two typos of HTS tapes wore used, one is no laminated tape(Sumitomo high strength type tape) and the other stainless steel laminated tape(AMSC(American Superconductors Inc.) 3ply tapes) Sample joints were lap-jointed with indium or solder. Joint resistances between Sumitomo tapes with 4-10 mm in length were estimated from I-V curves and in the range of $4-8n{\Omega}$ at 77 K. Joint resistances of AMSC tapes were in the range of $140-170n{\Omega}$, much higher than them of Sumitomo samples. The n-values of jointed HTS tapes were 50% of them with no joint. In AMSC tapes, indium is better than solder as the jointing material.

The I$_{c}$ degradation behavior of Bi-2223 tapes bent at RT and 77K were investigated using the bending device invented by Goldacker. Test results on fixing the tape at RT and 17K showed no difference. At 17K and RT bending, the critical strain was 0.67 and 0.50$\%$, respectively, for the VAM-l tape. For the AMSC tape, it was 0.94 and 0.88$\%$, respectively. These results show that there is additional residual stress in the superconducting filaments to be bent at 17K which shifts the formation of cracks into smaller bending radii. This was proved by computational analysis based on the mixture rule of composites. For the VAM-l tape, the Ie degradation behavior using the Goldacker type device shifted to higher strain levels at about 0.5$\%$, as compared with the FRP sample holders which have a critical bending strain of about 0.24$\%$. Also, for the externally reinforced AMSC tape, Ie degradation using the Goldacker type device begins at a higher strain level, at 0.88$\%$ as compared with using FRP sample holders, at 0.74$\%$. The difference between both cases can be explained by the tensile' and thermal stresses that the tapes were subjected to during fixing (soldering) when the FRP sample holders were used.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate effects of adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (AMSCs) on radioresistance of breast cancer cells. Materials and Methods: MTT assays were used to detect any influence of AMSC supernatants on proliferation of breast cancer cells; cell migration assays were used to determine the effect of breast cancer cells on the recruitment of AMSCs; the cell survival fraction post-irradiation was assessed by clonogenic survival assay; ${\gamma}$-H2AX foci number post-irradiation was determined via fluorescence microscopy; and expression of IGF-1R was detected by Western blotting. Results: AMSC supernatants promoted proliferation and radioresistance of breast cancer cells. Breast cancer cells could recruit AMSCs, especially after irradiation. IGF-1 derived from AMSCs might be responsible for the radioresistance of breast cancer cells. Conclusions: Our results suggest that AMSCs in the tumor microenvironment may affect the outcome of radiotherapy for breast cancer in vitro.
We designed and manufactured a 1.8T high temperature superconducting(HTS) insert coil for a NMR magnet operated at 4.2 K. Suitable HTS superconductor and HTS coil were carefully designed and developed. We have selected multi-filamentary Bi2223 conductor fabricated by American Superconductor Corporation(AMSC). The selected conductor consists of Bi2223 filaments of 55, silver stabilizer and stainless steel reinforcement tapes. Therefore, it shows good hoop strength as well as compression tolerance. The conductor has a tape cross-section of 0.31mm x 4.8mm. the Bi2223 conductor shows large anisotropy of critical current. The critical current of conductor in magnetic field parallel to the flat surface are much higher than that in magnetic field perpendicular. The HTS coil has an inner diameter of 78 mm, an outer diameter of 127 mm and a coil length of 600 mm. In this paper, the detailed design, fabrication and test results on the HTS insert coil are presented.
An electric propulsion system integrated with the ship service distribution system offers the naval architect considerable flexibility, and often the choice of a more affordable ship to acquire and operate as compared to a segregated mechanical drive option. United States of America navy announced in 2000 that they selected the electric propulsion system on next generation warship. Specially there is excellent advantages in superconductivity motors which can have higher efficiency, less vibration and noise, smaller dimensions compared with the conventional motors. The 5 MW HTS motor for warship test of electric propulsion was developed and tested. Also it was contracted between AMSC and United States of America navy to develop a 36.5 MW HTS motor in 3 years since March 3, 2003. This paper deals with the technical development tendency of HTS motors in foreign countries as well as in domestic, and it is focused on the application of HIS motors to the electrical propulsion system.
High-Tc superconducting(HT S) systems are commercialized by many study on high-Tc superconductor. For the successful commercialization of superconducting systems using Bi-2223 wires, the database on the degradation of critical current is essentially needed. In this paper, critical current variation of Bi-2223 wires according to the transport time was investigated. The degradation rate of critical current was also calculated. Solenoid type specimens have the length of 190cm Bi-2223 wire and double-pancake type specimens have the length of l0m wire were tested. Tested Bi-2223 wires are commercialized products of AMSC (American Superconductor) and Innost. When the transportation current was 95% of critical current, the degradation of critical current was appeared after 5 hours of transport time.
Critical current(Ic) degradation of HTS tapes after bending is one of the hottest issues in HTS development and application studies. Many people are measuring Ic degradations for effect of bending radius. However even if the bending radius is larger than the breaking radius a HTS tapes can be damaged by repetitive bending, which is unavoidable in the winding processes. Therefore, We studied the Ic degradation after repetitive bending. at 77K with self-field, of Bi-2223 tapes processed by "Powder-in-Tube" technique, which was made by America Superconductor Corporation(AMSC) and superconductiing tapes that strain is imposed measured critical current by temperature difference of L$N_2$ and normal temperature. Like this, critical current could measure that degradation about 1~3% by temperature difference. These results will amount the most important basis data in power electric machine of superconductivity cable, magnet, etc that winding work is require.
With the successful commercialization of Bi-2223 powder-in-tube wire , various attempts in the R & D of the high-Tc superconducting (HTS) magnets for high magnetic field applications are being implemented actively. Operating temperature of HTS magnet has to be maintained at the designed level but the magnetic energy and mechanical disturbance can cause unstable operational temperature of HTS magnet. Especially the generated heat energy of inner HTS winding Is apt to be accumulated . so the normal region appears in HTS winding. This paper deals with the quenching characteristics of three kinds of selected Bi-2223 wires : the High Current Density Wire (HC-A) and the High Strength Wire (HS-A) made by AMSC and HTS wire(HW-I) made by Innost The Innost wire has the highest minimum quench energy (MQE). The High Current Density Wire has the highest normal zone Propagation velocity (NZPV).
