Effect of post processing of digital image correlation on obtaining accurate true stress-strain data for AISI 304L

  • The aim of this study is to provide a clear and accessible method to obtain accurate true-stress strain data, and to extend the limited material data beyond the ultimate tensile strength (UTS) for AISI 304L. AISI 304L is used for the outer construction for some types of nuclear transport packages, due to its post-yield ductility and high failure strain. Material data for AISI 304L beyond UTS is limited throughout literature. 3D digital image correlation (DIC) was used during a series of uniaxial tensile experiments. Direct method extracted data such as true strain and instantaneous cross-sectional area throughout testing such that the true stress-strain response of the material up to failure could be created. Post processing of the DIC data has a considerable effect on the accuracy of the true stress-strain data produced. Influence of subset size and smoothing of data was investigated by using finite element analysis to inverse model the force displacement response in order to determine the true stress strain curve. The FE force displacement response was iteratively adapted, using subset size and smoothing of the DIC data. Results were validated by matching the force displacement response for the FE model and the experimental force displacement curve.

  • In this study, the carburizing heat treatment process used in aircraft gear manufacturing was compared with the general carburizing heat treatment process using AISI 9310 steel. The process of carburizing followed by slow cooling, and then quenching after austenitizing(Process A) showed less compressive residual stress and less retained austenite in the surface layer compared to the process of quenching directly after carburizing(Process B). In prpcess B, there was a large amount of retained austenite when quenched immediately after carburization, and when treated with subzero, martensite rapidly increased and the compressive residual stress increased significantly, but at the same time, there is a risk of cracking due to severe expansion in volume. Therefore, in the case of aviation parts, it is believed that a step-by-step heat treatment cycle was adopted to ensure stability against heat treatment cracks. As a result of the final tempering after sub-zero treatment, the A process specimen showed a deeper effective case depth and HV700 depth and a higher hardness value above HV700 than the B process specimen.

복합재/AISI4340 이중구조 후육실린더의 구조적 거동 및 최적화 (Behavior and Optimization of Cylinder Applied by Composite Tape Wrapping Method)

  • 높은 내압을 받는 장축후육실린더의 성능향상을 위해 최근 그 길이가 길어짐에 따라 무게 또한 무시할 수 없는 변수로 떠오르게 되었다. 따라서 본 논문은 이러한 현상에 대처하기위한 대안으로 장축후육실린더의 무게를 줄이고 대신 복합재 테이프를 감아 무게감소와 더불어 벤딩 (bending)현상을 줄이기 위한 목적으로 복합재가 AISI4340 후육실린더에 미치는 영향을 살펴보았다. 우선 크기가 감소된 AISI4340 후육실린더에 높은 내압을 받는 압력용기 등에 주로 사용되는 자긴가공(autofrettage) 공법을 모사한 후 T300/S208, IM7/PETI5, IM7/8552 테이프를 적용하여 각각의 복합재가 AISI4340 후육실린더에 감을 때 발생되는 응력분포를 살펴봄으로써 탄성계수 및 적층각에 따른 영향을 고찰하였다. 또한 복합재IAISI4340 이중구조 후육실린더의 적층각 도출을 위한 다양한 적층각 조합용 통해 적층각 도출을 위한 전초를 마련하였다. 본 논문을 위한 해석에는 MSC.Nastran/Patran v.2005가 사용되었다.

AISI M2 파우더를 이용한 SKD61 재질의 레이저 메탈 디포지션 기초 특성 분석 (Effect analysis in Laser Metal Deposition of SKD61 using AISI M2 power)

  • In this study, AISI M2 powder was selected primarily through various pieces of literature in order to improve the hardness and wear resistance. Among the laser metal deposition parameters, laser power was studied to improve the deposition efficiency in the laser metal deposition using a diode-pumped disk laser. An SKD61 hot work steel plate and AISI M2 powder were used as a substrate and powder for laser metal deposition, respectively. Experiments for the laser metal deposition were carried out by changing the laser power and track layer. The quality of the track surface and cross-section after applying the single-layer method was better than that obtained from applying the multi-layer method. As the laser power increased, the track thickness was increased, and the surface roughness deviation was decreased. In laser power condition of 1.6kW, the maximum hardness of the deposition track was 790Hv. This value was 40% better than the hardness of the SKD61 after heat treatment.

AISI 316L 용접부의 시그마상 형성에 영향을 미치는 크롬/니켈 당량비 (The effect of sigma phases formation depending on Cr/Ni equivalent ratio in AISI 316L austenitic stainless steel weldments.)

  • AISI 316L 용접금속의 크롬/니켈 당량비에 따른 시그마상의 영향을 알아보기 위하여 응고모드가 다른 3종류의 플럭스 코어드 와이어를 제작하였다. AISI 316L 시편에 FCAW 프로세스를 적용한 용접재를 $650^{\circ}C$, $750^{\circ}C$, $850^{\circ}C$, $950^{\circ}C$에서 각 각 1H, 5H, 24H, 72H동안 열처리하였다. 크롬/니켈 당량비가 높을수록 즉, 크롬의 함량이 높아질수록 $\delta$-페라이트 함량은 증가하였으며, $\delta$-페라이트는 고온에서 시그마상으로 변태되었다. $\delta$-페라이트는 $650^{\circ}C$에서 가장 느리게 분해되었으며 $850^{\circ}C$에서 가장 활발히 분해되었다. 용접부의 특성상 크롬과 니켈 등의 합금원소에 의하여 응고온도범위가 넓어져 $950^{\circ}C$에서도 시그마상이 석출되었으며, 5시간 이상 유지 시 구형으로 존재하였다. 충격시험 시 시그마상에 의해 취약해진 inter-dendrite 를 따라 파면이 형성되었으며, $-100^{\circ}C$이하의 극저온에서는 시그마상의 양과 무관하게 충격흡수에너지는 0에 가까워졌다. 하지만 3%미만의 $\delta$-페라이트를 함유하는 AF모드에서 발생한 DDC와 미량의 시그마상은 충격흡수에너지에 결정적인 영향을 미치지 않았다.

냉각공정에 따른 AISI 4140 강의 표면 및 트라이볼로지 특성 (Surface and Tribological Characteristics of Air-cooled and Oil-cooled AISI 4140 Steel)

  • AISI 4140 steel is widely used in various mechanical components owing to its superior mechanical properties. Surface hardening techniques are often used to further improve the properties, particularly for applications with moving components. The aim of this research is to understand the effect of heat treatment process on surface properties and tribological characteristics of AISI 4140 steel. In this work, we prepare two different AISI 4140 steel specimens- one cooled by air and one by oil- and determine surface properties such as surface topography and roughness using a confocal microscope. We also observe the cross-sections of the specimens using a scanning electron microscope to understand the difference in the material structure. In addition, we assess the hardness with respect to the distance from the surface using a micro-Vickers hardness tester. After characterizing the surfaces of the specimens, we investigate the wear characteristics of the specimens under hydrodynamic lubrication. The results show the presence of grooves on the surface of the oil-cooled specimens. It is likely that such grooves are formed during the cooling process using the oil. However, we observe no other significant differences in the surface properties of the specimens. The wear test results show the occurrence of severe wear on the oil-cooled specimens, which may be due to the groove formed on the surface. The results of this work may be helpful to improve surface properties using surface hardening techniques from a tribological perspective.

마그네트론 스퍼터링에 의하여 다양한 기판 위에 증착된 CrN 박막의 핵생성과 성장거동 (Nucleation and growth mechanism of nitride films deposited on glass by unbalanced magnetron sputtering)

  • CrN 박막이 펄스마그네트론증착법에 의하여 glass, Si(110), AISI 1040 steel 위에 증착되어졌다. 각 기판 위에 증착된 CrN 박막의 구조는 표면의 접촉특성 보다는 표면의 구조에 영향을 받는 것으로 판단되어 진다. 또한 grain의 크기는 기판에 관계없이 증착 시간이 증가함에 따라 증가한다. AISI 1040 steel 위에 증착된 CrN 박막의 grain 성장과 구조는 glass와 Si에 비하여 바이어스에 강하게 영향을 받는다. 이러한 결과는 glass 와 Si 보다도 금속이 높은 전기전도성을 가지고 있기 때문인 것으로 생각되어 진다.

고온 가스 질화와 저온 가스 질화 방법에 따른 AISI 410 마르텐사이트 스테인레스강의 경화층 및 마모 특성 (Surface Hardening and Wear Properties of AISI 410 Martensitic Stainless Steel by High & Low Temperature Gaseous Nitriding)

  • High temperature and low temperature gaseous nitriding was performed in order to study of the surface hardening and wear properties of the nitrided AISI 410 Martensitic stainless steels. High temperature gaseous nitiridng (HTGN) was carried out using partial pressure $N_2$ gas at $1,100^{\circ}C$ for 10 hour, and Low temperature gaseous nitiridng (LTGN) was conducted in a gas mixture of NH3 and N2 at $470^{\circ}C$ for 10 hour. The nitrided samples were characterized by microhardness measurements, optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The phases were identified by X-ray diffraction and nitrogen concentration was analyzed by GD-OES. The HTGN specimen had a surface hardness of about $700HV_{0.1}$, $350{\mu}m$ of case depth. A ${\sim}50{\mu}m$ thick, $1,250HV_{0.1}$ hard nitrided case formed at the surface of the AISI 410 steel by LTGN, composed nitrogen supersaturated expanded martensite and ${\varepsilon}-Fe_{24}N_{10}$ iron nitrides. Additionally, the results of the wear tests, carried out LTGN specimen was low friction coefficient and high worn mass loss of ball. The increase in wear resistance can be mainly attributed to the increase in hardness and to the lattice distortion caused by higher nitrogen concentration.

Finite element modelling of back-to-back built-up cold-formed stainless-steel lipped channels under axial compression

  • In cold-formed steel structures, such as trusses, wall frames and portal frames, the use of back-to-back built-up cold-formed stainless-steel lipped channels as compression members are becoming increasingly popular. The advantages of using stainless-steel as structural members are corrosion resistance and durability, compared with carbon steel. The AISI/ASCE Standard, SEI/ASCE-8-02 and AS/NZS do not include the design of stainless-steel built-up channels and very few experimental tests or finite element analyses have been reported in the literature for such back-to back cold-formed stainless-steel channels. Current guidance by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) and the Australian and New Zealand (gAS/NZS) standards for built-up carbon steel sections only describe a modified slenderness approach, to consider the spacing of the intermediate fasteners. Thus, this paper presents a numerical investigation on the behavior of back-to-back cold-formed stainless-steel built-up lipped channels. Three different grades of stainless steel i.e., duplex EN1.4462, ferritic EN1.4003 and austenitic EN1.4404 have been considered. Effect of screw spacing on the axial strength of such built-up channels was investigated. As expected, most of the short and intermediate columns failed by either local-global or local-distortional buckling interactions, whereas the long columns, failed by global buckling. All three grades of stainless-steel stub columns failed by local buckling. A comprehensive parametric study was then carried out covering a wide range of slenderness and different cross-sectional geometries to assess the performance of the current design guidelines by AISI and AS/NZS. In total, 647 finite element models were analyzed. From the results of the parametric study, it was found that the AISI & AS/NZS are conservative by around 10 to 20% for cold-formed stainless-steel built-up lipped channels failed through overall buckling, irrespective of the stainless-steel grades. However, the AISI and AS/NZS can be un-conservative by around 6% for all three grades of stainless-steel built-up channels, which failed by local buckling.

콩 분쇄기의 AISI 4140에서 200μm 미세 패턴 표면의 마찰 계수 및 마찰 계수 예측 모델 (Tribological Properties and Friction Coefficient Prediction Model of 200μm Surfaces Micro-Textured on AISI 4140 in Soybean Crusher)

  • In this research, the effect of normal load, sliding velocity, and texture density on thefriction coefficient of surfaces micro-textured on AISI 4140 under paraffin oil lubrication were investigated. The predicted tribological behavior by numerical calculation can be serves as guidance for the designer during the machine development stage. Therefore, in this research friction coefficient prediction model based on response surface methodology (RSM), support vector machine (SVM), and artificial neural network (ANN) were developed. The experimental result shows that the variation of load, speed and texture density were influence the friction coefficient. The RSM, ANN and SVM model was successfully developed based on the experimental data. The ANN model can effectively predict the tribological characteristics of micro-textured AISI 4140 in paraffin oil lubrication condition compare to RSM and SVM.
