  • In this paper, acoustic omission technique(AE) has been applied to detect leak for heat exchanger by analyzing the characteristics of signal obtained from leak. It was confirmed that the characteristics of the signal generated by the turbulence of gas in the heat exchanger is narrow band signal having between 130-250KHz. Generally, the amplitude of leak signal is increased as the leak size increasing, but showed no significant change at frequency characteristic. Leak source location can be found by searching for the point of highest signal amplitude by comparing wi th several fired sensors.

  • Capactive miro pressure sensor is simulated with finite element methods to analyze the effect of geometrical variation on its performace. Sensor material is th silicon single crystal. The sensor consists of a disk type diaphragm and several bridges connected to a rigid frame. Structural variables in consideration are the thickness of the diaphragm and the bridges, radius of the circular plate, and the number of bridges. Results of static, dynamic and sensitivity analyses reveal the best structure of the sensor among the fifteen cases under investigation.

  • New types of conducting polyaniline-polymannuronate (PANI-PM) composites were synthesized by in situ deposition techniques in an aqueous media. By dissolving different weight percentage of polymannuronate (PM) (5, 10, 15, and 25%), the oxidative polymerization of aniline was carried out using ammonium per sulfate as an oxidant. The obtained composites were studied for their thermal stability and electrochemical behavior. The thermal stability of PANI-PM composites is lower than PANI, which supports a strong interaction between PANI and PM. However, the composites show an appreciable electrochemical behavior. Based on these observation the PANI-PM composites can be explored in different fields such as electric devices, sensors, functional coatings, etc.

  • It is seldom possible that geotechnical materials like rocks and concretes found without joints, cracks, or discontinuities. Thereby, the impact of micro-cracks on the mechanical properties of them is to be considered. In the present study, the effect of micro-crack on the failure mechanism of rock specimens under uniaxial compression was investigated experimentally. For this purpose, thermal stress was used to induce micro-cracks in the specimens. Several cylindrical and disk shape specimens were drilled from granite collected from Zanjan granite mine, Iran. Some of the prepared specimens were kept in room temperature and the others were heated by a laboratory furnace to different temperature levels (200, 400, 600, 800 and 1000 degree Celsius). During the experimental tests, Acoustic Emission (AE) sensors were used to monitor specimen failure at the different loading sequences. Also, Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) was used to distinguish the induced micro-crack by heating in the specimens. The fractographic analysis revealed that the thin sections heated to $800^{\circ}C$ and $1000^{\circ}C$ contain some induced micro-fractures, but in the thin sections heated to $200^{\circ}C$, $400^{\circ}C$ and $600^{\circ}C$ have not been observed any micro-fracture. In the next, a comprehensive experimental investigation was made to evaluate mechanical properties of heated and unheated specimens. Results of experimental tests showed that induced micro-cracks significantly influence on the failure mode of specimens. The specimens kept at room temperature failed in the splitting mode, while the failure mode of specimens heated to $800^{\circ}C$ are shearing and the specimens heated to $1000^{\circ}C$ failed in the spalling mode. On the basis of AE monitoring, it is found that with increasing of the micro-crack density, the ratio of the number of shear cracks to the number of tensile cracks increases, under loading sequences.

  • Smart material is used in various applications such as for glass frame, for medical instruments and for a part of sensors. Smart composite materials ran be applied to a part of aircraft and to the on-line monitoring system for industrial structures, using the shape memory effect. However, it is very difficult to simulate and analyze the shape memory effect in smart composites. In this paper, a two dimensional axisymmetric model was proposed to analyze the smart composite of one fiber and matrix using the finite element method(FEM). The finite element analysis was carried out in two renditions of the room temperature(293K) and a higher temperature (363K). The results we.e compared with the experimental results to confirm the validity of the analysis. In addition, the acoustic emission(AE) technique was used to study the microscopic damage behavior and the effect of pre-strains on TiNi/A16061 shape memory alloy composite.

  • A time-frequency analysis method was developed to analyze the dispersive waves caused by impact loads in structural members such as beams and plates. Stress waves generated by ball drop and pencil lead break were recorded by ultrasonic transducers and acoustic emission (AE) sensors. Wavelet transform (WT) using Gabor function was employed to analyze the dispersive waves in the time-frequency domain, and then to find the arrival time of the waves as a function of frequency. The measured group velocities in the beam and the plate were compared with the predictions based on the Timoshenko beam theory and Rayleigh-Lamb frequency equations, respectively. The agreements were found to be very good.

  • This paper presents an algorithm robust to error for estimating partial discharge (PD) location using acoustic emission sensors. In operating transformers, the velocity computing of the acoustic signal is difficult because the temperature of the Insulation oil is not homogeneous. So, some error occurs in the process. Therefore, the algorithm estimating PD location must consider this error to provide maintenance person with useful information. The conventional algorithm shows the PD position as a point, while the new algorithm using LookUp-Table(LUT) shows PD position as error-map visually. The error-map is more useful than the conventional result because of robustness to error. Also, we compared performance of them, by adding error to data on purpose.

  • Content security and privacy protection are important issues in emerging network-based video surveillance applications. Especially, satisfying both real-time constraint and energy efficiency with embedded system-based video sensors is challenging since the battery-operated sensors need to compress and protect video content in real-time. In this paper, we propose a multicore-based solution to compress and protect video surveillance data, and evaluate the effectiveness of the solution in terms of both real-time constraint and energy efficiency. Based on the experimental results with MPEG2/AES software, we confirm that the multicore-based solution can improve the energy efficiency of a singlecore-based solution by a factor of 30 under the real-time constraint.
